Well, here’s one for the books. The local staple New College Restaurant on 4th avenue and Union street has gone through renovations in this past month. They have broken through all the dim outer walls on that corner and created a lovely open space with sliding glass doors, similar to the look Beso had on Union and 5th (before it closed last year). New awnings now boast “South Slope.” Menus still lay claim to their history of “serving Park Slope for 25 years,” but from the looks of it the owner just decided to revamp the spot with a perhaps hipper name and contemporary look.
I always wondered about the name New (not since the early eighties?) College (there’s a college around here?) Restaurant, but what truly befuddles me is the new name. First of all 4th and Union is barely Park Slope, if anything it’s Gowanus, despite the hopes of Realtors. Second, since when is Union Street considered South Slope? I thought I lived in North Slope? Go figure.

WHY DON’T YOU PEOPLE LIVE EVERYONE TO DO THERE BUSINESS WITHOUT MAKING A PROBLEM. WE LIVE IN VERY HARD TIMES AND YOU MAKING COMMONS ABOUT A NAME. DID ANYONE ASK YOU ABOUT YOUR NAME NO. WHERE IS THE FREEDOM THAT APPARENTLY YOU FIND IN THIS GREAT COUNTRY OF OURS. WHEN WE HAVE PEOPLE LIKE YOU THERE GOES THE NEIGHBORHOOD. THE RESTAURANT LOOKS GREAT AND THE FOOD IS REMARKABLE. EVEN THE PRICES ARE OK FOR THESE TIMES. LET THEM GROW THEIR BUSINESS.
Hey,
I’m one of the old timers… Leave Steve and Jimmy along… They know what they’re doing.
By the way… No realtors Bull Shit… This is still Park Slope. F… U all!!!
You mamacita live in Center Slope and the boundary of the slope goes to 3rd ave. FYI. As for the restaurant saying south slope that is just one of those mysteries.

Whoa there mary, don’t pop an artery. The food here is pretty good, though. Nice to have decent diner nearby.
As for its location – Park Slope’s western boundary is obviously 4th ave. That’s where the ground stops “sloping” If you hadn’t noticed, “Park Slope” is a very literal name. It refers to the area that slopes down from Prospect Park. It slopes down from 9th ave to 4th. West of 4th it’s very flat. Can it get any more intuitive than that?
Whether or not the buildings on 4th ave itself can be included in the slope is up for debate, but the personality of the area gets more and more like park slope by the day, so let’s just say that it can. But no, in no way is Union st. south slope. who knows about that one.
