I know your Maria’s cousin she use to always to about you and that you two were really close. I know she missed you alot when you moved away. Are you going to make it up for the wedding?

  6. BOBBYANN,

I WENT ON TO BROOKLYNIAN AND THAT LADY DOLORES ANSWERED MY MESSAGE. SHE WROTE HI BOBBYANN SHE GAVE ME HER EMAIL ADDRESS TO WRITE TO HER. I WILL CALL YOU AND GIVE IT TO YOU. SHE LIVES IN FLORIDA LSO NOW. WHAT THE HELL DID EVERY ONE MOVE TO FLORIDA.
    COUSIN TERRY

  7. Terry – of course I remember Sheila (and all the Joys), very well. I just didn’t go there re Sheila.. God rest her soul!

You made me laugh when you said “What the hell did everyone move to
Florida?” – that’s good – I’ll need all the support I can get when I finally move South.

Carol – yes, I remember the day like it was yesterday – when we got off
the 5th Ave Bus screaming (1964 I think) – we were going to marry the
Beatles. My mother ran out of the house thinking we were getting killed.
We’d be millionnaire’s today if we kept all of our original Beatle stuff.

Speaking of millionaire, I checked zillow.com and my house on 20th St. is valued at $789k. Think my cousin sold it for $39k or $49k in 1976.
My sister and I went there one night and took pictures on the stoop.
I remember my mother actually washed the sidewalk almost everyday.
And we had a built-in hopscotch pattern on the sidewalk, given the way
    the cement was outlined.

I laugh at Terry’s earlier comment how both your mothers were more vocal and ‘physical’ – and my mom was more low-keyed. (But Lord, I’d never cross the line, even with her low-keyed approach) Well we did cross the line a little bit. But what we thought was bad in those days,
is nothing compared to today’s activities. What’s so bad about telling
your parents your going to St. Thomas to dance and socialize, so you can stay out later… Then instead, go to a gas station to change your cloths and hang out on the corner.. At least we socialized.

Did anyone shop at Rosettes or Blossoms (I think) as kids? I did get my first credit card at Miracle Corner (they’d mark your sales and payments
on a card). My mom and Aunt Mary loved Berkelys.

I remember there was a salesman Andy who came to the house to sell household things; and I also remember the insurance man coming to the house for his monthly installments. (With all these men coming to the house during the day, wonder how many affairs were going on in those days?)

Oh – one important thing: Carol, Terry and Judy – I spoke to Jamsey Oliva. What a wonderful and emotional conversation we had. He
asked for you (Judy, I know you saw him recently).

I promised to be concise – so ciao for now!
    Francesca

  8. San, Maria never visited me. I would love for her to get away and come. How about you and Jim. I’ve got lots of room. Beach is right down the street.

Judy, I am trying to plan the trip in September for the wedding. Hope to see you guys there!

  9. I read and can hear all your voices and remember all those “happy times” we spent as children and young adults. Yes, those were really the “Happy Days”. As you walked down the street you could smell what each family was having for dinner or hear the music they were listening to or what TV station they were watching. You could hear the laughter and sometimes the crying after a fight or the death of a family member.
You would see all the happy or sad faces of your friends and neighbors and get the latest news of what was going on just by walking to the corner candy store. Who was ill, who died or was born and who was getting married. Everyone there would exchange the latest gossip. If you walked in any direction 10 blocks – someone new you, or your bros.,sis. cousins or parents, or you knew them or the butcher, fruitman, bakers, store employees, priests, nuns, teachers (all lived in the neighborhood)
Yes, the neighborhood raised us (with our parents). They did a good job. I miss them all! What a wonderful life we had. I always said I would do it all over again — even as ignorant and as poor as I was back then, ust to get one last look at the faces of my parents, family, neighbors and friends.
    I miss them all.
    Marie

  10. Marie, I agree. We did have the best of times. I am glad I grew up where I did, consider myself lucky for having my family and friends. I have such wonderful memories!

I still go back to 22nd – Aunt Carol and my cousin Alan, wife Shirley and their kids live there still. There are a few giant condos on the street which have replaced old friends’ homes.

  11. Mare remember that poor crazy lady that live in Aversano’s Building on top floor. She use to sit on the fire escape. She’d tie her dhair funny looking knots, scream at people down below and throw what he can, sugar bowls, coffee cups anything she had near her. She had a sister but she was the crazy one. She use to walk around yelling at the air.

Someone mentioned the beatles. Wow I had dolls, books, pencils, button, picture cards with the gum in them. I think they were 5 cents a pack. Every albumn and 45 they made. Well I thought I was to old for them and threw everything out in 1977. I just left them in a big box by the garbage. The garbage men, I’m sure cashed in on them.

I saw A Hard Days Night 15 times. I loved Paul McCartney and George Harrison. Santina

  12. Camille who knows maybe some day we will come to visit again. I’d love to go to Calif. again.

  13. MARIE CRISPINO,

YOUR NOTES WERE SO TOUCHING AND SO TRUE. I AM ACTUALLY CRYING RIGHT NOW AS I AM WRITING THIS. SO TRUE I ALWAYS SAY THE SAME THING TO MY KIDS AND FAMILY.. ME AND FRANNY BRUNO WHEN WE TALK ON THE PHONE WE SAY THE SAME THING. I WOULD LIVE MY LIFE OVER AGAIN THE SAME WAY, SAME PARENTS, SAME EVERYTHING. WE DID NOT HAVE MONEY BUT WE WERE RICH IN FAMILY AND FRIENDS AND TIL THIS DAY IT IS THE SAME. JUST READING EVERYONES COMMENTS YOU CAN SEE WE WERE RAISED THE SAME… POOR BUT HAPPY. MAYBE AT THAT TIME WE WISHED WE HAD MORE BUT I DO NOT THINK SO BECAUSE WE WERE ALL THE SAME… POOR. WE DID NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT BEING RICH EXCEPT MAYBE FROM THINGS WE SAW ON TV IF WE HAD ONE. YOUR COMMENTS WERE THE BEST. IF I COULD JUST GO BACK ONE MORE DAY AND HEAR MY MOM CALLING ME HOME OR JUST SEE MY DAD COMING HOME FROM WORK. IT WOULD BE WONDERFUL. THANKS FOR THE GREAT NOTES. TERRY

  14. An unexpected TOUR of PARK SLOPE…….

Last year I attended the funeral of a long-time family friend.
The burial was in Greenwood Cemetery (a beautiful place that served many purposes during ‘our day’ – other than its original intent).

For the funeral, my sister and I had the ‘privilege’ to ride in the family limo that was shared with someone many of you may know – Uncle Dim (Dimoluch) SP? (from St. Anna’s Club, D’Amico’s, father to Patty Morelli and all), and his beautiful wife Matilda. The limo drove through the old
neighborhood, the traditional procession we’ve all experienced.

Well Uncle Dim proceeded to share the stories from his days.
The one that stood out for me the most was how on 4th of July,
they would line up their chairs on 21st – in the street (you may
recall that above 6th Ave had somewhat of a hill). They would face the Statue of Liberty, and pay homage.

It was one of the many great stories he shared that helped reinforce
all my memories, feelings, and gratitude for HOW WE WERE RAISED
and WHERE WE WERE RAISED. Given I lost my parents a very long
time ago, it was something I valued coming from someone of
    their generation.

This was a blessed day because I got to share it with my husband
Frank, who constantly hears about my Brooklyn stories (he was
born in Kearney, NJ). Believe it or not, sometimes he’ll
introduce me to someone and say, “This is my wife Francesca, she
is from Brooklyn.” He knows how I love the place.

I was emotionally drained for two days after this experience, and I
would like to sum my feelings. I’m guessing this may express some of
YOUR own feelings, given we all come from the same ‘block’ –

“WE HAD NOTHING, BUT WE HAD EVERYTHING”

  15. Camille, are there giant condos on 22 bet 4th and 5th? What houses were taken down. San

  16. HEY FRAN, WHAT U WROTE WAS SO BEAUTIFUL AND I DON’T THINK I REMEMBER DIM DYING.HE WAS SUCH A NICE MAN AND FAMILY KNEW HIM WELL. CAN’T BELIEVE U SPOKE TO JAMESY EMAIL ME HIS NUMBER. MAYBE WE CAN ALL MEET IN STATEN ISLAND ONE NITE WITH HIME FOR A FEW DRINKS WOULD LOVE TO SEE HIME. HIS MOM AND MY MOM WERE SO CLOSE. AND SO WERE ME AND PAT TO HIM AND HIS BROTHER ANTHONY. EVERY FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL THEY WOULD WALK TO MY HOUSE AND MY MOM WOULD TAKE A PICTURE OF US. FRAN DO U REMEMBER WHEN WE USED TO SQUEEZE YOUR MOM’S FAKE GRAPES AND FRUIT ON THE KITCHEN TABLE. AND WHEN ME U AND DOLORES HUNG OUT DOWN YOUR BASEMENT (CELLAR AS IT WAS CALLED THEN) AND WE HAD THE BLUE JAY CLUB AND MADE UP THE BLUE JAY SONG. I REMEMBER EVERY WORD OF IT AND I’M SURE U AND DOLORES DO TOO. WE DID COME FROM THE BEST NEIGHBORHOOD IN BROOKLYN AREN’T WE ALL SO LUCKY. LOVE U.

  17. Carol – Dim didn’t die! (He was in limo with us telling the story). Yes, I
remember “Blue Jay” verbatim – so guess the 70’s didn’t affect my brain 🙂

We were very lucky! I remember we met while Dolores and I were roller skating. Remember we wore skate keys around our necks on a shoestring. Love You Too!

  18. San,
Condos are where the Locciasanos lived and I believe Jeanette Stranz. Also, some funky building where the Cavallos lived, if I recall correctly.
There are condos on 5th and 22nd too where Eddie Pizza used to live.

  19. Hey Lori..haven’t seen you write here in a while. You were just about the only person here near my age. Are you still livin in the neighborhood? I haven’t been back there since 2000′. I might be comin back soon to work on the Gowanus Expresway. I haven’t worked out all the details yet but anyone from that area knows the Gowanus is in dire need of repair and they are needing ironworkers to do the job. I can clearly remember driving on that section of highway dodging potholes while avoiding traffic in the other lanes.

  20. Santina,

I remember that woman who would throw stuff out the window. How about the day your dog dragged me across the ice and snow and slammed me into the apartment building across the street. LOL

I have to borrow someone’s car and go out to Brooklyn to see what the old neighborhood looks like. I haven’t been there since before Mike died.

  21. Lucia

Well I can’t believe all the people writing on this that I know. Carol Miele your mother Connie hung out with my mother in law Ann Pagano. Rocco’s,
the bottle gang all my friends. Camille, Santina, Allen, Linda Bransiforte from 21st St. Pat Bruno, all my memories. Hung out on 22nd St. I was always on 5th Ave. Sal, Johnny Devito, Kelly Iorio, one of the best bottle gang, Paula Calsiano, God Bless was my friend till she died, and Vito and the whole gang was my buddies. Jamesy Oliva and Froggy and everyone that hung out on 22nd St especially my husband Deetzie (Anthony Pagano)
What great memories guys, love you all. Keep going.

  22. A shot out to Franny Bruno, how are you. I can’t stop reading this. I know so many of you. You are right Fran we did come from the best neighborhood and that is because we all made it that way because of our roots. I lived on 6th Street but walked 5th Ave to 35th Street probably every night growing up. That’s how we all knew each other. I still see Jamesy we are very close. We have to get in touch. We need to get together. How is Phyllis? Hi to all and keep those memories alive.

  23. Michele Suarato

I hung out with your Dad Donnie Surarato in the neighborhood. I still see Pat, Michele’s mom all the time. Tell Donnie Lucia and Deetzie said hello.

  24. To All –
    Check out — Brooklynpix.com

    Then choose “Photographs”
    – On the left there will be a drop-down menu that lists all the neighborhoods, including three folders for Park Slope.

Enjoy and have a wonderful weekend!
    Francesca

  25. Hi,

I can see all of Francesca’s notes. I have an apple computer. Does that make a difference?

What made you move to FL?

  28. I was ljust reading some of the entries and some memories came back to me! Does anyone remember teh VA Post on 22nd street. I remember dong a parade and then going there afterwards for food?????

  29. FRANNY,

I CHECKED OUT THE PHOTOS. WOW THE ONE THAT HIT ME WAS THE RKO AND RIGHT NEXT DOOR WAS A LUNCHEONETTE I THINK IT WAS CALLED HENRY’S. I GOT …..HIBBERGIBBIES IN MY STOMACH….IT FEELS LIKE YESTERDAY WE WERE GOING TO THAT MOVIE HOUSE. I GOT MY WEDDING GOWN ACROSS THE STREET IN HENRIETTA’S WEDDING STORE. I REMEMBER ALSO AS A KID GOING TO DR. EPPS UP TOWARDS 8TH AND 9TH AVE. LIKE SOMEONE SAID ABOVE I THINK MARIE SAID IT….ONE DOCTOR FOR EVERYTHING. I STILL CAN SEE HIS OFFICE. I GUESS WE ALL REALLY HAD A GREAT CHILDHOOD GROWING UP IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. IF WE DID NOT FEEL THAT WAY WE ALL WOULD NOT BE ON HERE FEELING THE SAME. I STILL SEE YOUR DAD WITH THE ITALIAN BREAD UNDER HIS ARM FROM MIKES. OH MY TONY AND SANTA.. WHAT A WONDERFUL LIFE EVEN THOUGH WE WERE POOR…..RICH IN FAMILY!!!!!!! LOVE TO PHIL AND ROSALIE. LETS GET TOGETHER WITH JAMSIE AND THE GIRLS. THIS LUCIA SEEMS TO KNOW JAMSIE AND EVERYONE WE MUST MAKE IT OUR BUSINESS TO GET SOME KIND OF REUNION. STILL LAID UP WITH THIS KNEE. YOU KNOW ME I THINK I HAVE SOMETHING ELSE WRONG. IT IS 7 WEEKS AND I STILL CAN NOT DO ANYTHING. THANKS TO ALL THE JOGGING I DID TO STAY SKINNY, NOW I A PAYING FOR IT. LOVE YOU, TETE

  30. Hi Lucia – I never forgot you. We met the first time in life when you were hanging with my sister, Phyllis. Think you graduated BayRidge together;
and you also hung w/my cousin Peter Sacco (12th St) and those guys. I
remember going to Brighten Beach with you all (at that time I was probably the younger sister, trailing along). I have to give Phyll this site. She’s doing great. Unfortunately, her husband died 12 years ago, so young.

Then years later, you and I re-met through our common friends – Jamesy, Grace/Gay, Frankie Mush (Manzione), Joey Coleo, and of course Deetzy. We stayed in the club on 22nd St. next to Deetzie’s house (and of course Anna Pagana, who we all knew). Hope Jamesey sent you my best. We spoke last week, and he told me you were still close. That’s great! Congratulations to you and Deetzie.

I truly look forward to staying in touch!
    F

  31. hello everyone,
I’m loving all the stories, It is funny that i did live in that neighborhood, also lived in others.. but remember all the store you all talk about.
Franny i didn’t know that you went to ps10? I was there for 2 years. then i went to 9th grade in boro park.
Moved back to 32nd street until i moved to staten island 29yrs ago.
When i moved to 32nd street my neighbor was Susie Vivenzio. She married Nicky Albano who is Marie Cirillo’s husbands twin. Got that.
Well Susie and i went to the Gridiron and that is where i met Phil Santoli and history continued..
Does anyone remember the people from the garden appt on 4th avenue 23rd and 24th streets?
I do remember your mom Franny.
when i lived on 19th street between 4th and 5th. I had to go see my father at his mother’s house. (my parents got divorced and that is why i lived in France)
My friend Terry’s mom worked bingo with my father in law at St Johns.
My in laws still live in the garden appt.
I asked Phil about the Caretti story and he said it was true..I was always in the garden and never saw one of the caretti boys.
    The mother was very nice.
Susie bird live upstairs from Phil, and i went to school with her.
i have so much to say but no time now..
    talk soon.

  32. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO POST PHOTOS ON THIS BLOG? I TOOK SOME PHOTOS OF PARK SLOPE LAST WEEK AND I HAVE SOME OF 21ST TREET THAT MY SON TOOK. I HAVE SOME PHOTOS OF ST. JOHNS SCHOOL AND CHURCH I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH YOU.. TERRY

  33. Hey Lori, I know Michael S. from 22nd and Michael Mazzeo from 20th. The name Letizia sounds very familiar. I see your OLDER sis Terry is trying to get pictures on here but I don’t think it’s possible. I would hafta agree with Santina above and say it would need to be done through e-mail. I moved down here to Fla in 98′ after my wife got pregnant and decided she no longer wanted to live in NY. So here I am 10 years later with two kids, wanting to go back to NY to work. I miss many things about the old neighborhood but it would never be the same. Memories are whats important now.

  34. SANTINA IM SENDING YOU THE PHOTOS. IM OLLY416 WHEN YOU SEE IT ON YOUR EMAIL

SO WEREN’T THOSE GOOD SHOTS MICHAEL TOOK OF ST. JOHNS.

  38. Lucia,
This site is truly amazing. I just got into it a few weeks back when Santina sent the link to me. How’s it going with you guys? Make sure you give Deetzie a hug for me and tell Jamesy I was asking for him too!

Great memories from 22nd Street and all of the neighbors and friends who came to hang out, including you!

  39. Hi Judy – I can hear you shouting up the East coast. Yes to the fun days in Miami Beach (now look at what it has become; we were hanging there before it was a kool place). Remember Tweety?

Carol and I were more adventurous, and you would yell at us cause all those cute, young guys would follow us around the Castaways. It was the same trip that a full bottle of scotch broke in YOUR luggage. We had to be real young then; I recall you were the only one with a driver’s license (and I remember I was the only one you would allow to drive) – that was a big deal. Terry couldn’t come with us, cause she wanted to get married instead 🙂 Love You All!

  40. you know we all have to thank MICHAEL SCHRALLI for this site. he sent it to my sister lori and she sent it to me. his mom ANNIE SCHRALLI is still on 22nd street. i guess she knows the aunt lucy you all talk about who is in her 90’s. ANNIE is in her 80’s and still going strong. also joanie red lives on that block. as i wrote before she wrote a book. all about her hardships and the people who helped from the neighborhood when she needed it. i forget the name. i know the word love is in the title. she mentions people froM years ago. she was johnny, linda who is my age paula who was missing for along time. that was their mom. she had other kids one just died not too long ago one of her sons i forget his name. the last name wa calsiano. someone mentioned paula not too long ago on this site. terry

  41. Terry,

Joanie lives next door to my Aunt Carol. Her husband was FC (Frank). He used to hang around with my Uncle Albert and Vinny and Alfred Minifo ??. My sister, Marilyn, was good friends with Joanie’s daughter, Margie. She was soo cute. Never did hear what happened to Margie. Does anyone know?

    Camille

  42. Carol Pepper was also in my class. I forgot about her. And yes, she was married to Joey.

Camille I remember uncle Albert always talking about FC, but I never knew he was on the same block.

Lucia, glad you like this site. Where did Valerie (long brown annoying hair)come from and what was her last name. I told Toni and Pat about this site also, but They have never posted. Someone mentioned the Monteleone’s posted here somewhere. I wonder if there’s a connection to Charlie. Maybe Toni knows them. Santina

  43. San,
FC and Joanie moved to 22nd Street later (I might have already left for Cali). Do you remember Margie, red hair with lots of freckles? And, Marilyn’s friend, Freddie?? He and Margie went together for awhile.

I remember Valerie — that’s a real blast from the past! She was a crazy dancer too. I remember her boyfriend, Billy. Didn’t Doris Matos marry Billy? Any word on Doris??

Didn’t Joey Iorio pass years ago? What’s happened to Carol Pepper?

I sent you an email after you sent me the 20th St. pictures. The one that I loved was the St. John’s Chuch courtyard when were served detention for the ink fight we had. Remember, Kathy Moss sniched. When we saw the principal, we pretended to be praying. Of course, Sr. Rose Margaret told our teacher (Sr. Georgina or Sr. Cornelia, I can’t remember which one) what good girls we were for staying after school. Then, we got crap!

  44. SANTINA,
