OMG, yes I remember Munson’s. Like you said, Terry, every year we went there to get our corsages. He was a “Mr. Rogers” kind of a guy — very gentle, from what I can remember.
Michael M, you mentioned Paul Approbato. He was a neighbor of mine. He also delivered my bedroom set many years ago. Do you remember his dog “King”? He was a big german shepherd and most of the kids on the block were afraid of him.
Also remember Drs. Friedman and Lipninski. Those were the days when the doctor came to you. I always was so frightened when he came into the apartment because that meant you were getting a needle.
Does anyone remember Cappo’s candy store on 4th bet. 21 and 22 streets? He had penny candies laid out in a glass case in the front of the store and he made a great malted.
Carol, deetzie’s brother was Peter after his Father.
Yes Camille that’s the Bakery (Rosa took over that store) Do you remember Rosa’s being near D’Amico’s on the second floor, before moving to 22nd? I remember Munsons. Hey Camille do you remember our Sunday excursions through Greenwood Cemetary and to Ferrara’s in Manhattan for coffee and pasteries? We use to love to see the old wacky stones. I don’t remember how many of us went. Deetzie were you with us? Lucia said you are enjoying the posts. You probably remember alot more from the neighborhood. Santina
Does anyone know what happened to Bobbie Ventriglia? He use to live in the First house next to Seafarers Lot on 21st near 4th across from Josies Store. I know he married Katie and had a son. Santina
Camille, Isn’t Dr. Friedman the Doctor that was writing prescrptions for drugs to everyone just cause they asked. I vaguely remember something about that.
CAMILLE,
I THINK ANTHONY M. WROTE ABOVE WAY ABOVE WHEN WE FIRST STARTED ABOUT THAT BAKERY. WE REMEMBERED IT WE WOULD GET JELLY BUNS AND CRUMB BUNS IN THERE. I DONT REMEMBER THE NAME BUT I DO REMEMBER GOING THERE. SURE WISH MY MOM AND DAD WERE ALIVE SO COULD ASK THEM ALL THESE QUESTIONS. TERRY
Yes Cappos I loved that candy store- Danny Cappo. I remember getting cigarettes for my father, 26 cents and you could buy them at any age. Their eggcreams were great,on theleft of Cappo’s was De Russo’s Fruit stand, a barber next door on the right of Cappos, a big brown house with a very long staircase, Frank Gabato’s Butcher, Mayfair. Santina
CAROL,
WHO IS DEETSIE? I REMEMBER THAT NAME. AND…WHAT WERE ALL THE GIRLS NAMES FROM 23RD STREET PARK. (ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE PARK) I REMEMBER THE JOY SISTERS, WAS PAULA THE GIRL WHO USED TO HANG WITH US FROM THERE? I THINK MY COUSIN DONNY WAS MARRIED TO SHEILA AND SHE PASSED AWAY AND SHE WAS RELATED TO THE JOY SISTERS. FRANNY STILL KEEPS IN TOUCH WITH ELIZABETH JOY I THINK……BUT DEETSIE I REMEBER THAT NAME THATS A NAME YOU DONT FORGET. LIKE ZEKIE FROM 20TH STREET. COUSIN TERRY
I remember that chinese rest.on 9th st. was it Sun Luck or Sun Joy. They had the best soup.
MARGARET R,
JUST THOUGHT ABOUT HOW WE HAD TO GO IN THE BACK TO PICK OUR CORSAGES UP AND THE SMELL OF THE FLORIST. I STILL CAN SEE HIM OR HIS WIFE GETTING THE PINS FOR US TO OIN IT ON. HE ALWAYS HAD A SWEATER ON LIKE MR. ROGERS. LOL TERRY
SANTINA,
YEAH…SUN JOY WASN’T IT UPSTAIRS. I WENT TO DANCING SCHOOL ACROSS THE STREET WHEN I WAS VERY YOUNG. MY MOM WOULD WALK US TO 9TH ST. FROM 20TH ST. MY SISTER MICHELE WAS IN THE BABY CARRIAGE. MY MOM WOULD LEAVE HER DOWNSTAIRS WHILE I WOULD PRACTICE. ONE DAY WE CAME DOWN AND THE CARRIAGE WAS GONE. ONE OF THOSE BIG COACH CARRIAGES. I WAS REALLY YOUNG BUT I REMEMBER MY MOTHER LOOKING AROUND AND THERE WAS MY BABY SISTER ON THE FLOOR OF THIS HALLWAY AND NO CARRIAGE. TODAY THEY WOULD HAVE TAKEN BOTH. I REMEMBER SOMEONE WRITING HOW THEY WOULD LINE THE CARRIAGES OUTSIDE GERMAINS AND MOMS WOULD SHOP. THOSE WERE THE DAYS TERRY
does anyone remember the sewing factory on 21st street, and the pickle factory that used to be on the first floor between my house and the Parisie’s..
I remember the florist he used to make the best corsages. Remember the sweet 16,they used to have little sugar cubes on them.
Germains used to have chow mein sandwiches. does anyone remember those.
Terry, that’s it. The Jelly Donuts and the Cream Filled. Yum. Deetzie is Anthony Pagano. He lived across the street from me on 22nd Street (4th & 5th). His brother was Nunzio, mom was Anna and Dad was Pete. There was a social club next door to his house where we used to hang out (for awhile, it was called the 11th Commandment, then no name).
Santina, I think it was Sun Luck – great Won Ton Soup. And, who coud forget Cappo’s and the egg creams. Danny Cappo would sing to me, “I wish I had the wings of an angel, so that I could fly away with you”! Do you remember that? He had a partner too, was it Pete?
Saraphine, my Aunt Carol, who is 92 and still lives on 22nd Street, worked in that factory. I remember the florist too. I got my Sweet 16 corsage there and used to get carnations on Mother’s Day for my Mom and Grandmother.
Camille,
Danny worked the store, but Pete Cappo owned it. Pete lived up stairs. When I was about 11, his wife would ask me to help her clean the house. Sweep up or dust. Really nice lady — would give me 50 cents for cleaning – of which I spent in the candy store! tehe
and then I even worked behind the counter cleaning glasses and dishes. Danny would give me candy as pay. And I was very happy to get it.
Santina, Camille,
Did you see the condos for sale on 21st Street – Amazing!
I tried to send you one that was sold just so you could see it, but I guess it didn’t take.
Marie, I remember now that you mention it. I’m sure you loved getting the candy as pay. Remember the back of the candy store. It had all wooden booths? In the later years, they didn’t get much use.
Santina, Camille,
Yiks!!!! Can you believe the money they are asking for these buildings.

San and Marie,
It’s amazing! Think about what our sold our parents’ homes for!
I’m sick – my mother sold our house 3 floors and a wine cellar and a huge back yard and garden. 1976 $10,000
Does any body remember alan lagreco from 21st street. I beleive that he lives in florida ?
there was an Italian resturant off of 7th ave . It had the best food, other than our moms. I beleive it was called Gussie’s, did anyone ever eat there ?
I remember a girl named Vincieann, she lived by nats the cleaners . I think she had a chainlink fence in front,I am not sure. she also had a brother.
Saraphine, vincieann does not ring a bell but Natalie Loccisano, Nat the Tailor’s daughter.lived on 22nd st. between 4th and fifth, her and her brother Rocco were in my class. She lived by Janette Stranz and her mom Kitty. Camille. did you know he Loccisano’s. Did Boopsie have any kids? was that her name. All the people are coming back to me. What was Danny’s name that was in the drum and bugle Corp at St. Rocco’s. He use to go out with Nina. We use to go watch him play, that was fun.
Camille the othe guy with Cappo was Pete but he had a different last name. Pete was the owner.
Santina
San and Saraphine,
Natalie Loccisano was a good friend when I was very young. Rocco was her cousin. Natalie had two sisters, Carmela and Josephine. Boopsie had had two boys and a girl — her daughter, the youngest, was Clothilda. I can’t remember the boys names. Do you remember Vinny with the big, black framed glasses? He was Boopsie’s nephew. Danny Sanchez — lived on 22nd — older brother Angel, little sister, Michelle and little brother, Charlie, who looked exactly like Danny. Now, here’s one for you, Santina. Nina lives about 10 blocks from me in Redondo Beach. Has for 10 years. Joann lives in California, in Lakewood, about half hour away.
Marie filled me in on Pete Cappo, who owned the candy store.
Santina, Dr. DiTora was the physician that got busted for writing phony prescriptions. He was a few doors down from Dr. Friedman.
Saraphine, Vincieann or Vivian as she liked to be callled later on, married Donna Pisculli Rago’s cousin and I think they may be living on SI. I think her dad just passed last month.
I do remember the sewing factory next to your house. I could see the women sewing from my apartment window.
You were asking about Joey Patti. I guess they moved from 21 street a few years after you did. I don’t remember if they moved to NJ. I think all of us girls had a crush on him at one time.
Sheila was one of the Joy sisters that married Donny. They lived in the Patti’s old apartment at 215 21, where I lived. The rest of the family lived in your old apartment house later on. Years later, when my son was ready for elementary school, I met Tina Joy Facher, who was registering her son for the same school. They eventually were in the same class and played little league baseball for many years together. Tina’s husband, George was their coach. It goes to show what a small world we live in.
Right I remember that Dr. I think it was Tortora. He’s the felon lol.
Michael C. God your name really sound familiar and I could almost picture your face! Who did you hang out with at work back then? Did you say you worked in teh claims dept.? That was in the back behind the records room? Charlie used to work there also.
does anyone remember philip vernon, had a sister caroline, mother’s name was stella and had an aunt named mary. they used to live on 21st. 4th and5th. camillepleaselet me know if u are marie taglinetti’s cousin
Hello everyone. I posted earlier (Anthony M). Have been busy and couldn’t get to this site for awhile. Bobby Occhiogrosso I remember when your dad bought that light blue 1962 Pontiac Bonneville 4 door hardtop. That car was sweet. I was at a car show with my 1955 TBird recently and saw one just like it. I thought of your dad immediately. I think I also remember my mom and dad (Rosie and Frankie Mei) talking about your dad getting into a fight with some big dude from 20th Street at one of the St Johns dances in the school hall. I think the guy’s nickname was Fury. Pretty sure that it wound up your dad dropped him with one punch. Try to get back to this site soon. Stay well everyone.
Yes Camille is Maria Taglianetti’s cousin, Maria Has brothers Alan, Philip, Dennis. I mentioned way back that they were cousins, but u missed it. I miss lots of posts even though I read every one. I just love this site, I think it’s therapy lol. I know it’s fun.
MICHAEL BOYLE,
I DID NOT PUT 2 AND 2 TOGETHER. I LOVE YOUR MOM AUNT ROSIE. I SPOKE TO JUDY YESTERDAY AND ASKED HER. SHE SAID THATS AUNT ROSIE’S SON. PROBABLY MET AT ONE OF THE OCCHIOGROSSO, CATALANO PARTIES OR WEDDINGS. KNOW YOUR MOM AND AUNT COOKIE AND ALL UNCLE FRANKS SISTERS SINCE I AM A KID. I REMEMBER YOUR MOM WORKED I THINK FOR KEFOOD IN THE MEAT DEPT. FOR MANY YEARS. ALWAYS HAD A GOOD TIME WITH THE OCCHIOGROSSO AUNTS. TERRY
SANTINA AND SARAPHINE,
I PULLED OUT THE GRADUATION DIPLOMA BOOKS FROM ST. JOHNS. I REALLY AM GETTING OLD I COULD NOT READ THE NAMES THEY WEE SO SMALL.. IN MINE I SAW THERESA PASSARETTI. IN MY HUSBAND’S BOOK ONE YEAR AHEAD OF ME 1963 WERE ALOT OF FAMILIAR FACES. I KNOW YOU PROBABLY WROTE WHAT YEAR YOU GRADUATED IN THE NOTES ABOVE. WHEN WE STARTED WRITING IT WAS NOT THAT MUCH TO READ. I FORGOT ABOUT FATHER SALERNO AND FATHER D’AMATO. FATHER SALERNO IS IN FLORIDA NOW HE RETIRED. WE REMAINED FRIENDS. HE JUST HAPPENED TO BE MY BOSS AT ST. FRANCES CABRINI IN BKLYN HE LOOKS BETTER NOW THAN HE DID WHEN HE WAS YOUNG. HE IS IN HIS 70’S NOW. ANYWAY WHAT YEAR DID YOU GUYS GRADUATE? MARGARET DRITTO GRADUATED IN 64 WITH ME SHE WAS THE OTHE 8TH GRADE. TERRY
Carol Miele, I am Marie Taglianetti’s cousin. Your name sounds familiar.
I should have graduated with Margaret but I got left back in 6th grade and theres where I met Camille Liguori. We graduated in 65, then went to H.S together.
Santina, did you remember that my cousin Dennis passed away when he was only 40? About 10 years ago.
Hey Lori, aside from hangin out with Charlie I hung out with Manny who also worked in claims and others that I cant remember their names from the mail room. I worked in the claims dept. which was in the main building while the records dept.(vault) was in the smaller building beside that one. I can see your face as clear as day. We didn’t get along at first but we were friendly after a while. Like I said earlier I was a punk kid and you…well you let me know exactly where it was at..lol. Have a good one.
Wow, so you hung out with Charlie. Where did you live? I’m sure you wrote it some where on this blog, but it is so long know it would take some time to find it! I feel like that was another lifetime for me! Do you remember laura? Robin? Phil from the mailroom? Where are you living now?
Yes Camille I do know Dennis died. Cancer, yes?
Camille remember Connie Miele the older women that use to visit Anna Pagano. Well Carol Miele is her daughter. That’s why the name is familiar to you. Right Danny Sanchez, and we all fussed over Charlie he was so cute. Wow, Nina is right near you. And right Rocco was Natalies cousin. Josephine use to help out at the Tailors. San
Yeah I hung out with Charlie. I lived on 21st between 4th and 5th Ave. I don’t remember any of the people you mentioned but I remember most of the people that Marie C. mentioned that worked in the claims dept.
San – Dennis died of an infection months after he had a bone marrow transplant (Maria was donor). Yes, Carol is Connie’s daughter. Definitely remember, now. Do you ever see anyone we went to school with at St. John’s? Jerome Mammolito, Roseanne, Rose Licata, Denise Giordano, Robert Petrucci, Michael Romola, Raymond Sharkey?
Jerome use to live on 29th with me, when he got divorced he moved, it was her house. He has a Son Michael, he should be 33 years old. The last I heard he had his own Law Office in Bay Ridge. He was the lawyer who helped me when I got sued for my dog bitting the telephone man.
Denise had a beauty shop years ago on 32nd street, I don’t know what happened to her. Who Roseanne? The guys, who knows where they are?
Santina

Hey Lori, I’ve been in Florida for the last 10 years. The weather is incredible but when hurricane season comes around there is reason to be concerned. I came across another site ‘Classmates.com’ around the same time I found this site. St. Johns has quite a few people listed there but it has pretty much been a dead site. Have a good one.

Camille, that’s very sad what happened to dennis. How’s Aunt Carol and Maria? Did uncle Rocky die? I know uncle Albert died. I went to Greenwood for my in-laws grave and glanced over and saw Uncle Albert’s name on the stone. They r right next to my in-laws.
hey guys,
i just remembered another store when i saw the name camille. i knew a camille from the neighborhood. her mother worked in the dry cleaners on the corner of i think 19th street. KENTS. i just loved to watch her mother write the slips up for the clothes. she was an attractive woman always with a bun and she would put the pencil in the bun when she was not using it. always had her nails painted. left such an impression on me as a little girl.. camille had a sister i think older than her. terry
