Hey, I am Donnie Suarato and Pat Nicoletti’s daughter. I do remember so much from 21st street bet. 4th and 5th. I was born over the fruit and vegetable store on 5th bet. 21st and 22nd sorry don’t know the name. My Grandmother Tootsie always out her bedroom window. My Aunt Loretta lived above her. The household always smelled of something stirring up in the kitchen. Grandma was great for that. Grandpa was always scurring around the house fixing or helping or just causing enouph of chaos to ruffle grandma’s feathers. I remember the side street bar on 22nd with the sounds of the jute box blarring. Rocco’s candy store was at least a once a day stop.Grandpa Nick at St. Anna’s. Streets were constantly moving. Where or who you were going to be with for holidays was a given.Morning coffee and fresh rolls.Italian Ices from D’Amico’s. Block party’s that lasted from dawn til dusk. Adults laughing, conversating, playing cards or what ever, while me as a teen just thought that was life and thought that was the way it always would be. The whole mile radius around me seemed like one big family. No matter what it just seemed that everyone in their own way was secure and familiar and comfortable in their surroundings. Having been given the opportunity to live there I feel now as a mother of two, try to explain to my children what we had then. Unfortunately as much as I try I don’t think they will ever experience that.
St. John’s Church is so clear in my mind. Sunday morning mass, sitting, kneeling while all the nuns watched over. Intimidated by the priests and their power to administer the body of christ. Right next door was uncle ralphie(suarato) and aunt marie. I always had the feeling of being welcomed enough to appear at their doorstep and stop in and listen to the adults shoot the breeze. I would then go hang out with my friends and would also experience my fist kiss (not telling who). From there the family relocated not too far, but it was not 21st street.Although I do have to say that grandma tootsie suarato, grandpa (tony suarato), aunt bobby ann, uncle gene, my father (donnie), sheila, aunt loretta, uncle tony, did keep that old neighborhood feel alive. The constant laughing, making of plans, slap stick humor. Holidays, birthdays, communions, graduations, summer yard tin pool partys. Homemade lanterns hanging. Something I would like to revisit but not going to happen. There are so many people that I remember it almost seems like a city within a city. As a teenager I was at the age where I was very impressionable. I have to say this neighborhood left an impression that will stay forever.
Sounds like this is a family board. Seems like everyone else stopped writing lol.
Ok all you old cousins! I’m a cousin too! Much younger,46! I am so jealous that i can not add to this site! I was the one who received this site frist…oh sounding like the baby again! I remember angeloC from our block. I was sick and he came up to my house one day and sang a song to me in Italian.he had a beautiful voice back then.I never forgot that.
Is he still mayor ?
Margaret Dritto was in our class Saraphine.
Michael C – I was good friends w/your sister Josephine (we graduated St. John’s together and used to hang out w/Eileen Giordano!!). Gerry Santoli – wow 5 grandsons – please come w/us the next time we go out to dinner – it’ll be a blast (I see Eddie Joe Eskew every now & again)! For all the St. John’s graduates who remember Fr. Sclafani – we all remember Prayer + Study = Success, but how about singing happy birthday to the Blessed Mother and listening to Fr. sing “Animal Crackers” (I STILL know all the words) & his theme song “I Wish I Was Single Again.” And the bazaars!! Margie Angelo & Aunt Annie (Schiralli) always sold the food! Good times and great memories. Hey TerryAnn – I want to come to your family reunion! How’s your knee?

NOW TOOTSIE AND TONY ARE MY DADS COUSINS AND REMEMBER THEM SO WELL. THEY WERE ALWAYS SO MUCH FUN. THEY ALWAYS WERE AT OUR HOUSE ON 20TH STREET. IF YOU READ MY NOTES THEY LIVED IN MY GRANDPA CARLY (CURLY) AND GRANDMA TESSIE’S HOUSE WHEN THEY GO MARRIED. THEY LIVED IN OUR HALL ROOM LIKE EVERYONE IN THOSE DAYS. THAT BECAME MY ROOM WHEN I WAS OLDER. WHAT A GREAT FAMILY AND GREAT MEMORIES. COUSIN TERRY

I JUST HAD AN ANXIETY ATTACK JUST THINKING OF DR. LIPNINSKY. DID WE ALL GO TO HIM? HE HAD A SON WHO CHANGED HIS NAME TO DR. LIPTON. TIL THIS DAY I RATHER HAVE ANOTHER BABY THAN GO TO THE DENTIST. TALK ABOUT TRAUMA. I REMEMBER SCREAMING EVERY TIME I HAD TO GO THERE. HE WOULD KNOCK YOU OUT AND PULL YOUR TEETH. I STILL REMEMBER HIM DOING THAT. HIS SON WAS NASTY AND MY MOM MARGIE ANGELO TOLD HIM OFF ONE TIME. REMEMBER HIS NURSE MARY THAT WAS AT THE FRONT DESK. I CANT REMEMBER HER LAST NAME BUT SHE HAD BLACK HAIR. THAT BROWN STONE IS OVER A MILLION DOLLARS NOW. YOU CAN NOT TOUCH THAT NEIGHBORHOOD NOW. ALL YUPPIES. LOVE COUSIN TERRY
THANKS TERRY !!!
I was waiing for my granddaughter (20 yrs old) to come over, but I’m so glad that your son go thru – she had a lot to say about my brothers and cousins. Hope she comes on. LOVE TO ALL.
I spoke to Uncle Angelo yesterday and he told me that when they were young, Uncle Jigsy had a club “Rinkly Dink” club. He used to put on plays in Aunt Fina’s backyard. Cousin Millie Vaccaro was the main actress and he used to charge a penny for the kids to see the show. Great Grandpa, Michael Angelo would come out and chase them “get out Somonabitch”. We had a good laugh over it. Thought I would share that story.
On 4th between 22nd and 23rd in Brown stone was Dentists Dr. Lipton, his father Dr.Lipinsky. Dr. Freeman MD.(closer to 23rd. The other side of 4th Ave/22nd St. opposite the Mayfair/Riviera over store was a Black Dentist, Dr. Marshall.) The Mayfair owner was Benny Calendrino, my mother’s first cousin. I rmember being there for a football wedding where Sandwiches were served. On the corner of 22nd st towards 21st. on the 5th ave side of 4th ave Was a drug store forgot the name could have been Perrys, no not Perry’s. I could almost see the name. I could see his face, I know there was a Perrys on 5th Ave..There was also Aaron’s the Tailor there on 4th and 21st/22nd.. Richie Rizzi had a Pizza place on 4th Ave On the Church side of 21st Street. Every Friday we used to get a large calzone (half of the size of a pizza box.) He was my mothers first cousin. Joey Colao used to live on my block, 21 st.closer to 3rd, on the opposite side of me. His uncle Charlie owned the Chicken market on my side of street. near 3rd. Raymond Cardone lived 2 houses from me. Later on he stayed on 22nd street with us. He later married our friend Georgine. Opposite side of street, were the DeLeo’s, my mom’s cousins. Across from me was Joe and Anna Fish (Pesce) next to them the Aversano’s Dimples (august), Cookie (name ?) Chickie ( was shot on 5th Ave) was married to Annette DeLeo didn’t know his real name either. They also had a brother Michael, sister Roseann. Another sister I think Mary Ann not sure. A little further up was the Marielli’s Johnny dogs was one son, Anthony and Camille were the other siblings. In the same building were the Cambria’s; Chick, Mary and Anthony. Towards the corner was a lumber yard opposite that was Blackies tire shop, (later on became Scapacci’s funeral home.) All the young guys hung out there at Blackies.) If I’m not mistaken I saw a young Sailor there Deetzie (Anthony Pagano). I was young at that time. Later on when I hung out down 22nd near 4th.with my friend Camille, I hung out with him and his friends. There is where I met my friends Toni Bove from 8th St and Pat Meenan from 12th St between 6th and 7th. Lucia Giacometti from 6th street, Valerie, Linda Branciforte, Sally Ears, MaryAnn Tango, Pat Salvio, Joann, George Elliott, Carl Palange (Lee) from 21st and 6th, Michael D’Lessio, My cousin Junie DeLeo, Billy Kazmierzak 17th St.. Billy use to pop in to see me around New Years, when he was in to see his mom. Now his mom goes to Calif. to see him, the warm weather is better for her. So I haven’t seen him in 2 years. I don’t see any of those people today Except my 2 dear, closest friends Toni Bove and Pat Meenan and occassionally Lucia. and Camille, who is in California. I don’t know if you guys know any of these people, but I enjoy remembering Santina
santina
boy you just jogged my memory. so many people you named lived on my block. Joe & Anna Fish were my mom’s cousins.
Do you remember Madeline Flanko, sisters Elaine,& Olivia ? they lived in the same apt Theresa P did .
I googled angelo C . mayor he seems like he is a very important person. It looks just like him just alot older and no hair..
I would love to see the picture you have of us. Is it a class picture ?
Do you still live in brooklyn ?I haven’t seen the old neighborehood in over 20 years.
My son got married in Livingston, N.J. ten years ago and we went into the city, but never had time to go to the old hood.
thanks for remembering old doc he came to my house alot.
it seems like half the hood is related to someone or another.
take care
Saraphine, Hi no I moved to NJ in 1999. I have been to saint John’s because my nephew decided to get married there about 6 years ago. It has Flags on every poll with everyones family crest on it. It looks slightly cluttered and gypsy-ish. A while ago there was a Fr. D’Lorenzo there he changed the whole marble alltar with carpeting. That beautiful altar gone. He made the altar look like a stAGE. tHEN HE SHACKED UP WITH THE GIRL FROM CHOIR IN THE RECTORY. They got him out so fast. He became Episcapalian(?) and married her.
Flanko sounds a little familiar. Yes I do have the picture, but can’t think of where it is. I took it out for St. John’s alumni before they closed the school. I never put it back where it belonged, so now I have to look for it.
Santina
Hey Karen D – I definitely remember your name and if i’m not mistaken you wore glasses and had curly hair. Lori Angelo, I remember you for sure from the neighborhood and from Seafarers as well. You were dating this guy Charlie at the time you were working there. You were petite and gorgeous. You didn’t take crap from anyone and I was a punk kid so I riled ya a bit and ya didn’t hesitate to put me in my place. Carol Miele, I remember your sister Roseanne, please let her know that my brother Vincent is doing great and when I told him about this site and her askin for him he was quite excited about it. Marie C. , I worked at the Seafarers as well in the late 70’s in the claims department and I remember all those people you mentioned. The name of the real estate agent I mentioned earlier on 22nd and 5th was/is Camberlangos, it came to me last night out of nowhere .
Michael C
I was the person who typed the checks . I had a white LTD (beautiful car) some jerk stole the battery. I use to bring in the jelly donuts every day.
I sat next to Jack (think his last name was Delaney??) During the Strike, Big Mike and I were the only ones who crossed the picket line because my union membership had not gone through yet. I was told if I didn’t go in I would be fired! After that strike, management decided to move. When the old timers went to MD/Wash. there was a bad accident. Truck hit there mini bus. Some of them had minor injuries, but Bert was injured very badly and was crippled for the rest of his life. He passed away about 4 yrs ago.
I still keep in touch with Hillary Jones.
I think I remember you Mike. You were younger then us. You use to love my cars – if I have the right Mike. You were thin, 5’11” dark hair, good looking young guy! You worked with Big Irish Michael in the computer room – yes/no???? Let me know.

I still keep in touch with Hillary Jones. Hey, do you remember ANNA – she was older Italian woman who lived on 49th street – and retired before they mov ed. Made us laugh all day. I loved her. Then there was Josephine who typed the checks on some kind of machine (I forget) she had a sweet daughter I called her Twinks – her eyes were so blue and twinkled.

Hey Marie C I was a young teen when I worked there. My brother ran the mailroom and I started workin there, then started working in the claims dept. soon after. I’m not the Mike you think I am but I believe I remember you. You had a daughter that worked in that building as well.
Michael C., What is your last name? yes, that is me, I was dating Charlie back then. Boy goo dmemory, I sometimes forget! ha, ha. I loved that job. I rolled right out of bed and into work. I sometimes had to go work down off of second Avenue in teh warehouse. Those days were fun also.
hi mike c. i told my sister roseann that u told vinny she was asking for him she said to send her love to him. she is now in staten island i think vinny knows that. how is mom give her our love. good to hear from u again. i too went to dr. lipinsky and i do remember mary his secretary i can picture her clear as day with her glasses hanging on the end of her nose. i also remember dr. friedman he used to make house call with his little black bag, my sister pat and i would run under the bed and my mom would yell for us to get out from under it , we were so afraid of him. i also remember the drug store on 19th st. and 5th ave. it was called hall’s, then there was the german deli, einhorns, the pork store, across the street was the macaroni store that i worked at with fran bruono. i wish was could all go back for one day and just relive it and really appreciate what we had. thank god for all the great memories. love to all….
Michael Michel, you also got your first kiss at Rye Beach. I wonder how many others experienced the same? Judy Volpe was a cute girl- blond if my memory is correct. Rye Beach trips were fun. Santina, the Marinellis lived a house or two down from the Cambrias. I lived on the corner over the Coloniel lumber yard. I moved out of there in 1961-a year after graduation and we went to Flatbush. I used to play stickball on 22nd street bet 4th and and 5th with Deesti and his friends, right outside of Nickie Schralli’s house. If the name Agoglia rings a bell, that was my grandfather and my uncles. Does anyone know the name of a girl who graduated St John’s around 1961 or 62 who lived on 18th st bet 4th and 5th- Rt hand side of the street opposite entrance to Prospect Expy. Address over her door was in gold foil letters and I think it was a brownstone with a staircase leading up to it? I remember her from school and the neighborhood and can’t place the name. Has anyone seen or heard from Ralph Garguilo fron 19th st?
Michael C,
You are thinking of Josephine. She had a daughter working in the dept. with us – Twinks. I do not remember her name. No I did not have any family working at Seafarers. I had two school aged kids when I worked there. I was in my forties. I was sent there as a temp for the President of Seafarers and they asked me to stay perm in the claims dept.
Hi Santina and Marie C — I took me a week to get back here! This is great! We live in Redondo Beach, CA. My daugher, Lindsey, is 25 now. I hear all about your kids, Marie, from Santina. So glad all is well with you guys! I laughed when I saw the reference to Miss Lagamisina. Wow, I totally forgot about her!
Michael Michel — Do I know you? You mentioned Sally and Jackie (Sally Ears and Jackie Price???) We we friends back in the day.
Carol Miele — Dr. Lipinsky was my dentist. I lived on 22nd bet. 4th and 5th. His office was just around the corner. I was terrified of him. My mom made me go to him. He slapped me and that was the last of it.
Does anyone remember Dr. Friedman (medical doctor) at corner of 22nd and 4th Ave?
I just saw Santina’s mention of the doctors above.
Peter Conlon – re plane crash on Sterling Place — There was a memorial plaque for the little boy pulled from the crash who died at the Methodist Hospital. If I remember correctly, the plaque contained coins that belonged to the boy. It was displayed in the lobby of the Methodist Hospital up on 5th St./9th Ave. Don’t know if the hospital is still open.
Hi Camille,
How are you? It’s been ages since I’ve heard from you. Hope all is well. My husband Mike passed away 5/2005. My son Mikey’s family has grown. He has a son 4 and daughter 2. Fran & her husband live in Forest Hills, NY and Mikey, wife and kids live in Andover, NJ off of Cranberry Lake. Fran is a nurse in Roosevelt Hospital in the delivery room. She is expecting 6/21 (its a girl – so the MD says). So as you see the family is growing. I would love to see pictures of you and Lindsey.
my e-mail is [email protected].
Marie, sorry about Mike. I didn’t know. Congrats on all the grandkids. Lindsey should be getting engaged at the end of the year. Maybe a wedding the year after. Her boyfriend, Evan, is a great — a Hermosa Beach kid, but loves NYC and Brooklyn too. He’s been back to visit the family with Lindsey. I will definitely send pictures when I get some pulled together.
Santina, how the heck are you?? I would love to see you and your family this year. If I come to Maria’s son’s wedding in September, I will definitely visit! I miss you!
Hey Lori, my last name is Clemento. I’m a couple of years younger than you. Carol Miele, I never knew that Roseann was a Miele. I remember a Charlie Miele who was at least 10 years older than me and i’m now 44. I believe that the Charlie i’m talkin about had a sister that flew over the handle bars on her bike and cracked a tooth, please correct me if i’m wrong. Seems there is a true love for what the neighborhood was. It is great reading all the memories, keep em coming.
Hey Camille, How r you doing? I’m ok. I miss you too. Please come or I’ll meet you, when come East. It’s been way too long. Actually I think was when your Dad died. 1994? Do you remember all these store mentioned? Do you remember the name of Bakery on 5th bet 22nd and 21st near Roccos? Santina
Hey Santina, i’ve seen mention of that bakery ealier in this thread. My memory of that store was it being a florist but that was in the 70’s. I remember a bakery on 20th and 5th next to Todos bar and a furniture store across the street from there where Paul Approbato worked. He lived on 21st with his wife Kitty and daughter Seraphine and son Robert.
Santina, I remember all of those stores on 5th Ave — know the bakery you’re talking about too. It was next to the gas company (which was corner of 22nd & 5th on Rocco’s side of street). The bakery became Rosa’s Beauty Salon later. We used to go there after church on Sundays and get donuts (with chocolate/cream inside). Yum!
There were also several clothing stores that we (girls) used to shop in on 5th Ave. and I can’t for the life of me remember their names.
Do you remember the Chinese Restaurant on 9th Street slightly above 5th Ave – it was across from the RKO Theater? Great ribs and egg rolls!
CAMILLE,
METHODIST HOSPITAL IS STILL THERE. THE PLAQUE IS IN THE CHAPEL WITH THE COINS. I WORKED THERE IS 75 AND MY FIRST GRANDAUGHTER WAS BORN THERE A YEAR AGO. THE NEIGHBORHOOD IS ALL YUPPIES. THE HOUSES SOME OF THEM OVER A MILLION DOLLARS. NO ONE WANTED TO LIVE THERE IN THE 70’S WHEN I WORKED FOR METHODIST. THERE WAS MAYBE 2 PLACES TO EAT. NOW…..ALL CAFE’S. RESTAURANTS AND ALL ODD STORES LIKE THE VILLAGE. TERRY
MICHAEL C.,
IM LORIS SISTER, OLDER SISTER. THE BAKERY I REMEMBER NEXT TO THE BAR WAS A JEWISH BAKERY WHEN I WAS YOUNG. THE FURNITURE STORE WAS TOBINS I THINK, SOMEONE MENTIONED THAT SOMEWHERE ABOVE. I REMEMBER THAT BAKERY SO WELL. I THINK YOU ARE MUCH YOUNGER AND I DONT KNOW IF THAT JEWISH GUY WAS THERE IN THE 70’S BUT IT WAS CERTAINLY A BAKERY. TERRY
ANY BODY REMEMBER MUNSONS FLORIST ON 5TH AND I THINK 21ST STREET. HE WAS A BIG GUY WITH A MUSTACHE AND HIS WIFE WAS A HEAVY SET LADY. WHEN I WAS YOUNG I WOULD GET MY BIRTHDAY CORSAGE EVERY YEAR. GIRLS REMEMBER THEM…..BUBBLE GUM, CANDIES ETC FOR EACH YEAR. TERRY
Thanks, Terry. I visit Brooklyn every couple of years and have been to the new “yuppy” Park Slope. But I couldn’t remember if the Hospital was there or not! The bakery you are talking about was a Jewish bakery next to Totto’s (Dixie Tavern) on 20th and 5th. The bakery I’m talking about was off the corner of 5th and 22nd St. Is that the one you remember, Santina?
That florist was the one I just mentioned. I thought that was the same location as the bakery that Santina mentioned earlier but Camille mentioned that that bakery became Rosas beauty salon. I couldnt remember the name of Munsons and it still doesnt ring a bell but as soon as i read Tobins it clicked. Thanks Terry : )
GEORGE BE, I WAS FRIENDS WITH A MARY AGOLIA WE WENT TO ST. JOHNS TOGETHER A FEW YEARS BACK I WAS IN A BANK IN BROOKLYN I BELIEVE CITIBANK AND SHE WAS WORKING THERE IT WAS GREAT TO SEE HER.
