I hear your still working too…oh well so am I, haven’t won the lottery yet..but hope springs eternal!!!!!! someone mentioned burgerama!!!Wow I loved that place, best burgers and tuna sandiwches…there’s a burger king in it’s place now, can never replace all those good old places as far as food and just a wonderful neighborhood feeling.
Christina Oliva, Hi glad you remember me, and I am going to the reunion, my sister Carolyn sent in the money for Nilda, her & me. Thanks for asking, see you soon!!!!!!
Does anyone remember the dumps movie theatre on 4th avenue and I think 28th street. When we were young, on saturdays, we each got 50 cents, 25 cents to get in the movies, 25 cents for candy, and we got a huge bag of candy for our quarter, and we were there for the entire afternoon, we saw 2 movies, Abbott & Costello mostly and about 10 cartoons, it was a great way to pass the day…and my sister would spend a nickel, she would buy a big daddy lollipop, and when I finished my candy I would drive her nuts until she gave me the 20 cents she had left….. also the Moose Club on fourth avenue, my father belonged to the club, and at Christmas time they had a big party there for all the members children, boy those were the days!
Hello All
Great blog I know some of the names my wife Tina knows more. I married the younger Joy. I’m 60 now and left the neighborhood when I went in the Army at 18 never to return. My sister Laura who has passed away would know more. Some of the names I have not seen may have something to do with age not sure though. Sally enea we knew as sally kneecap anyone remember Tommy Dilillo, Micky who was Rocco’s cousin, Sally Savarese, Joey pepe and his sister Valerie, Carmine Vento, Jimmy Pepper, etc. nobody mentioned the shoe box on 5th where us poor people shopped 🙂 anyway alot of fond memories from the past. It’s been great reading all of your comments and sharing your memories.

Good Morning – TGIF
(or as my recently-retired husband says, “Everyday is a Saturday.”
CRAFT PROGRAMS at PS10:
I remember them so well; it was fun to be in the school building without having to be ‘in school’ I’m not sure, but it may have been sponsored by a local Protestant Church. I remember a school friend who lived right next door to 10’s (Debbie Roth), and I think it was her church. It really was a fun time there… Lucille, thanks for bringing it up.
HATS W/SPARKLE COINS (they had a specific name):
Didn’t we all wear them? Not only were many of them homemade,
I recall a ‘hat/pocketbook’ store on 5th Ave (near 16th St). They sold them there. And CAROL MIELE, if you recall, this is the same
store where we bought our beatle caps (the fake leather/pleather John Lennon-type hat). I also recall buying one of those pocketbooks there that folded into a triangle, and it closed with this bone-type thing. They were all the rage during Junior High. One final note re the sparkle hats… It is one of the very few things I still have from my mom (yes, I still have a sparkle hat; don’t be jealous). I keep it in a plastic bag and smell it once in a while.
REINGOLD PARK (up 17th St)
Someone mentioned this ‘bench’ park overlooking the Prospect Expressway. When I was very, very young – my grandmother
(the original Francesca: FRANCESCA RUGGIERIO SCHIAVO)
and I got ‘lost’ in that park. Mind you, we only lived on 20th
St…. and we got lost. My grandmother didn’t speak English
and we wandered away from a store on 5th Ave., where my
mom and Aunt Mary were shopping. I remember everyone
freaking out… and we were found sitting on a bench. Not
sure if the cops got involved. Whenever I pass that area, I send a Blessing up to Grandma Francesca.
BROOKLYN ACCENT:
Hi to the Palma sisters! Glad all is well. I had to chuckle when
one of you said “we are Italian – it is spelled Palma not Palmer”.
Till this day I have problems ennunciating some/many words. Unless you had diction lessons in those days, which I doubt…. we mostly say ‘er’ at the end of a word vs ‘a’
I never realized this until one day (when I was a corporate instructor), one of the students wrote on my feedback form that I was very distracting because I kept saying Agender instead of Agenda with an a. I never realized (or cared). So when I want to bust chops, I over ennunciate my words. (Till this day I can’t pronounce/make the distinction between words like porn/pawn,
bear/bare, etc. Everything sounds the same.)
Also, when I first because an instructor in the mid-70’s, and I went through some initial courses, I was told to work on my accent.
Specifically “You must lose your accent because when you go
around the country you will turn people off; they won’t care
what type of education you have, or anything else – you will
lose them when you speak with your Brooklyn accent.” The balls on this man.. a Dr. C. Martinez – who came from the Bronx and had an accent worse than mine. Needless to say – I didn’t drop the accent, I just integrated all of our upbringing into everything I ever
taught. Many of my examples were based on growing up
Park Slope… but that’s another post, at another time.
(When I first taught in NJ in early 70’s the students would connect me to “Welcome Back Kotter” which was popular in those days.
They’d say ‘was it really like that growing up in school in Brooklyn’
as if we were from a different planet.’)
GROWING UP ITALIAN:
Did anyone ever eat AMERICAN BREAD??? (ok, one more memory
before I go).
I was ordering lunch in a cafeteria in Atlanta one day and I requested my sandwich to be put on American Bread. The
lady behind the counter thought I was nuts… I said, yes, American Bread – what do you use down here – Tastycup, Wonder Bread? She said lady, there is no such thing as American Bread. There wasn’t? I can’t believe this.
Well my dad was still alive back then and I called and asked him
about this. He laughed and said – that is White Bread…. Growing
up, as I said earlier, my grandma didn’t speak English, so when
we set the table – there always had to be bread there even if
we didn’t eat it (representing our wonderful GOD). And we’d
say to grandma – bread Italiano or bread Americano? Thus,
little Franny Bruno – still till this day – wants to call white bread American Bread.
Thanks for listening and have a blessed day!
A couple of more names and places from the neighborhood. Danny Capos candy store 4th ave and 22nd st. The pizza place on the corner of 21 and 4th I can’t remember the name. anyone remember Jeanette, Kathy, 22nd street between 4th and 3rd ave. Joe Longos pool hall 21st st. The rittenhouses 22nd street. Louie Riech 18th st. Bobby Connelly and girlfriend rosann.
HI CHARLIE LOVED WHAT YOU POSTED. IT BROUGHT TEARS TO MY EYES. SEE YOU TOMORROW 🙂
GOOD MORNING ALL HAD TO GET MY DOSE FO THIS BLOG. WILL CHECK BACK LATER HAVE A GREAT DAY 🙂
HELLO BLOGGERS:
From the old neighborhood, does anyone remember the pool room on the corner of 20th street and 6th ave. and what about Nick the barber. There also was a beauty parlor on the corner of 21st street and 6th avenue which later became a candy store which I think was owned by Ida and Benny Latina. What a great hangout. I remember going there for lunch during school break and having a burger, french fries and an egg cream all for less than $1.00. WOW try to buy that today. Too bad we can’t turn back the clocks. What a fantastic childhood.
There was also a candy store on the corner of 22nd street and 6th avenue. I’m not sure who owned it, but that was another wild hangout.
Does anyone remember Mary Gonsowski, may she rest in peace she had 2 brothers Raymond and Stanley. They hung out with us back in the 60’s. Does anyone know what became of their whereabouts.
Also lastly, there was a beauty parlor on 17th street and 5th avenue. What was that name. I remember one day I want to get my hair done in an upsweep, remember with the curls sitting on top of your head LOL, what a pisser. But that was the style back then, over 40 years ago. Boy, are we showing our ages. But they are wonderful memories. Hope to see you all at the reunion.
Love Laura
Laura… 17th and 5th was CasaBella’s. (I think) My aunt Rosie worked there for years.
Does anyone remember the corsages we used to wear for our birthdays?? I think we used a different candy for different years.
Francesca Saracino: I always had a rproblem with those same words and still say porn even though it sounds like pawn to me, lol. I never plan on losing the Brooklyn accent. Many people tell me that they love hearing it. Most think I am Italian since there saw too many movies with my accent, lol. I am Irish & Polish, Janet
Mrs. Maresca was my third grade teacher at St. John’s and lived on 22nd between 3rd & 4th. I graduated St. John’s in 1965. I haven’t heard anything about Mrs. Maresca or her family for years. Does anyone know? My fourth grade teacher was Mrs. Vega or something like that. Remember the dances at St. John’s and sodality?
Terry, I didn’t realize you already discussed Mrs. Maresca. I joined the site a little late and I still spend hours on it and can’t get to read everything. I’m neglecting my family, housework, everything. I’m addicted.
Camille Green: I don’t remember evewr hearing about a Mrs. Vega. I graduated in 1963 an the only lay teachers I had were Mrs. Maresca and Mrs. Fazio. Janet
Bob Horan, When we think of the Steeplechase, we laugh. My sister Marie Crispino beat the crap out of a midget who was zapping everyone with the electric prod. When you got off the horses you had to go through the fun house and there you found the midget clowns zapping you. well one made my sister Ann cry 4 years older than Marie. Marie got her pocket book and beat the crap out of him. She was young about 12 I think, maybe older/younger. Mare if you r reading, I hope I got it right. Everyone was watching looking and cheering her on. The way she tells it we get hysterical.
Danny Price…
It’s good to hear from you.
Sal
Good afternnon bloggers:
I am not sure if these places have been mentioned but what does anyone remember Bob’s deli and John and Jean’s candy store on 23rd street and 5th avenue?
Barbara Spencer: Do you remember Dorothy and her younger sister (forgot her name)? They hung out the the Durante’s. They lived on 5th avenue and 23rd street. Their grandmother was in a concentration camp. She used to sit outside their apartment.
Nilda: Alan and I are coming in to Brooklyn next weekend to see my Mom. My e-mail is [email protected]. Please e-mail your cell and e-mail and I will let you know when I will be at the nursing home.
Have a nice day all,
Lizzie
Hi All
A very funny story about Steeplechase and those two clowns:
One time in particular the big jerk with the electric cattle throddle burned my sister’s arm. The kids would be caught by the clowns in the little RR building and keep them there.
Well the following year when we went back: I was a little taller and very strong for a girl — I told my two cousins and my sister to run while I distracted them ——-
— I WRAPPED MY LEATHER BAG AROUND MY ARM AND BEAT THE LIVING SH-T OUT OF THOSE TWO JERKS.
EVERYONE IN THE PEANUT GALLERY APPLAUDED AND SCREAMED WITH JOY. I WAS ABOUT 13 AT THE TIME.
Recently, channel 13 showed an old film of Coney Island and Steeplechase — and you could see those two chasing the kids.
Check you TV guides to see when it will be on again….great memories.
LIZZIE,
I ALWAYS REMEMBER YOUR MOM AND HER SISTER ALWAYS TOGETHER WHEN WE WERE YOUNG. TELL SUSAN I SAID HI ALSO. LOVE TERRY
To All: Have a happy and safe holiday weekend.
TGIF Everyone!
Barbara Joy, (Hi to all her sisters on the blog too)
Look forward to hearing from you!!!!!!! :):):)

To everyone else, especially Pinky and Nilda,
Have a Great Labor Day!!!!!!!
Bless The Troops

Danny Price & Charlie Miele, Did you guys play on the St John’s Team that Bobbie Corbet coached? Back then I was known as Tony. At the end of the season we went to Felix’s Rest. for our awards dinner. Anyone remember the German Sheperd dog that was always at Felix’s? I would always cross the street.
When we moved to Brooklyn no one could pronounce my name (Rodolfo). I believe it was Sally Caimano, Russell’s mother who gave me the name (Tony). We would also play stick ball on 19th St. bet 4th & 5th. Jimmy Paladino his younger brother Anthony (Tony). Billy Canna, Russell Caimano, Loui DePippo and sometimes Tut Paladino, Artie Milo (Artie jr’s father), James & Robert Palientone (spelling ?), Bobby Corbet and Richie (can’t remember last name) would join in. I believe Anthony is still living on 19th Street.
Terry: When I don’t travel I work out of my house. THAT’S WHY I AM ON THE COMPUTER! Also leaving for Miami in the AM thus getting my stuff ready.
Special Hello to:

George,
Hi. How are you? Yes, Tom and I remember Capo’s on 4th Avenue. We always said Pete made the best malteds. We also remember Kathy Burke and Jeannette. Do you remember my cousin Mike Rumola? Don’t remember the name of that pizzaria on 21st and 4th. Funny you should mention Longo’s Pool Hall on 21st. My son just got married to Joe Longo’s granddaughter. Small world…
The Rittenhouse’s are all scattered. Some in LI, FLA, NC and Texas.
Just Tom and his sister Joanne are still in Brooklyn.
Regards to all.
Donna Reitz,
Your name sounds so familiar to me. Did you go to St. John’s and if so when did you graduate. I graduated in ’67.
DANNY PRICE,
Okay, confession time. I’ve always thought you were the cutest guy in the neighborhood! I had a little crush on you.
It’s so nice to say that now, beging 45, happily married and not so shy anymore. Come on ladies, you know you wanted to say it too!
Hope you and your brothers will be at the reunion. Ger, Anthony, James are going and I’m coming from Florida to be there.

George what is your last name My brother is Sally Enea after kneecaps he was called Sally Bones. He’s married to his childhood sweetheart for 39 yrs. Has 3 daughters 2 are married, has 1 granddaughter.
MARIE CRISPINO – Hello….
Thank you for the GREAT Steeplechase Story.. A true classic.
I have seen that Ch. 13 Special on Coney Island. It’s well-done and very nostalgic. Ch 13 also does the walking tours, featurning the individual boroughs, and of course – the best one being Brooklyn.
Marie — AND ANYONE OUT THERE WHO IS INTERESTED –
Did you Know that there are LIVE WALKING TOURS (somewhere downtown Brooklyn). My sister Phyllis went with her friends (HI SIS, if your reading this – I love you!). I’ll summarize what I recall her telling me:
The tour takes you through a six family home (like the ones we knew and loved) and within each apartment there is a different
ethnic theme, from a specific era.. The kitchens are decorated to
match the beautiful diversity of each ethnicticity, e.g., Polish, Italian, Spanish; not sure what other family groups there are.
Phyllis said that the Italian apartment/kitchen looked just like ours at home, in the 50’s. Very authentic…. I recall most Italian kitchens looked similar in those days. God Bless the Italian Kitchen!
and the smell of garlic cooking 🙂
Hi All,
My Mom says the pizzeria was called Aneils , you could only buy a pie no slices. Hope this helps..
Santina
Hello last name is Fachner. Thats great who did Sally Marry? say hello for me hopefully he will remember me. Does he stay in touch with anyone? where is he living? DONNA REITZ TANZILLO
Hello, I remember you from the neighborhood and I think
Bay Ridge?. Also I was in Kenneth’s classes in P.S.146
(I assume same Tanzillo??). So long ago, I might be
confused..
Look forward to seeing you at the reunion… and you are
absolutely right – many of us will look different. We can
pretend we’re not ourselves if we run into someone we
didn’t like (LOL). I am looking for the bright side of looking different…
Signed,
The Velveteen Rabit
Hi Margaret
How are you guys are you still on 16th ave. Congradulations for little Tommy my best Catcher:) Give him by best. I just about lived in Longo’s pool hall whenever I could. Say hi to Tom for me. Have a great labor day week-end.
George
Rudy
Any idea where Russell Caimano is ? He graduated with me but no one seems to know where he is.
FRANNY, i was just thinking of your dad with the italian bread under his arm he was smart my mom would send us to get it an the heel would always be bitten off. would get in trouble because we had 4 kids in the family and we had to share and i guess that was my share.
AMERICAN BREAD…yes american bread on sunday after church put the gravy on it and eat it. sneak a fried meatball in your mouth when margie was not looking. years later she would hide the meatballs so she would have some left for the gravy. soft americnan bread or italian with that ravy soaked on it. how come we did not get fat years ago doing that. now if i do it it goes right to the fat a–. love ya OH GREENWOOD GIVES TOURS ALSO WALKING TOURS. SOUNDS MORBIT BUT THAT CEMETERY HAS HISTORY.
GETTING BACK TO THE TEACHERS.. DIDN’T CONNIE AT FELIX’S REST., HER DAUGHTER, SHORT BLACK HAIR TEACH AT ST. JOHNS FOR AWHILE. I WENT TO SCHOOL WITH CONNIE’S SON JOSEPH GALLITELLI. GRAD. 1964. TERRY
TERRY-
Gravy bread was the best…. remember? When I make it these days, that’s my meal; because I keep testing it on a half-loaf of
bread and don’t want to eat anything else. Sometimes I try to be good and eat it on whole wheat bread (it’s still good). Mom would fry the meatballs on Saturday morning, and I’d get up after being at the Gridiron ‘all night’ – and eat the fresh-fried meatballs with a glass of orange juice. If I did that today, I’d be sick.
Remember when we’d buy french onion dip and potatoe chips
(had to be Wise), and we would sit on Grace’s stoop and talk?
All memories always come around to food, don’t they?
Hi Everyone,
Was reading some older blogs,
Carol Miele, Henrietta’s Bridal shop on 9th St. I would always look in their window at the dresses, can’t believe you bought you gown there and remembered to mention it.
Lori Angelo, The chicken market, it stunk! and I laughed when I read your blog mentioning it. My grandmother used to go there for her chickens.
TO THE PRICE BROTHERS, Nice to hear from you and glad you are doing well.
Danny, you were always good….playing sports all the time. Me, Linda Pascone & Maria used to get up at 7:00am to go watch you, Russell and the guys play hockey, I think at Ft Hamilton, we used to freeze but we had to be there. It is funny you remember Paul when he was so young riding his big wheels on 5th ave, he definately used to race that little bike. And Bingo at St. Johns, mostly all of our mothers would go there to play bingo.
Steven, Glad to hear your doing well in Florida. . Steven you knew all about my secret crush on your brother Danny. You guys were so cute, we were so young. I remember you playing sports on 5th Avenue too with Robert Orlandi and my brothers and all of your friends.
Stay well and hope to see you at the reunion.
CAROL, PATSY MIELE & ANN MARIE WALTON:
I Think the pizzeria was called Aneils on 4th ave. I do remember going in there for a slice of pizza with $.35cents being the cost, I didn’t have to buy the whole pie.
Good night.
I always called white bread American bread too! And, I used to eat gravy sandwiches w/meatball chasers for Sunday morning breakfast. one meatball for me one for buffy my dog! terry, you’re right, i wish i could still do that. my stomach is even older than me!!
a few people mentioned Mrs. Maresca and Mrs. Garzillo. I know Mrs. Garzillo passed away a number of years ago. Mrs. Maresca went to live with her son-in-law. I don’t think she’s alive (oh my, i’m turning into my mother – if she didn’t see/hear from someone for a period of time, she made them dead!) but who knows, if she is still with us, she’s got to be close to 100, if not older.
have a safe weekend everyone.
Hi Geri-
Your right the pizza place at 647 4th Avenue was called Aneils-
Nice talking to you today… Dont’ forget you’re coming to Port Washington, while I’m on vacation. So I can take you to lunch in Sag Harbor….Love you
FRANNY,
as i was reading your notes i was thinking of the onion dip and chips we would eat on grace’s stoop. remember going to her basement eating heros. i always tell my kids we italians eat for everything. we eat when we are happy, sad, parties, funerals or just to comfort ourselves. i think i am trying to get fatter for the reunion. last night i ate a bid dinner and sat afterwards and ate a big fat gigantic candy bar, eww. OH AND I DID NOT SHAR WITH ANYONE. LOL
Donna Reitz Tanzillo — did you have a brother Jackie. I spoke to him a couple of years ago when we were planning our 1972 reunion. Unfortunately he could not make it…tell him I said hi.
Didn’t Mrs. Garzillo have a daughter Irene…wonder where she is…
Judy
Terry…..Connie from felix’s daughter did teach at st john’s. Her name was angela bruno. Christina and I had her in 7th grade.
Camille Green -I graduated St Johns in 1967 and don’t remember you, but I think the 4th grade teacher was Mrs. Lucy Garcia, not Mrs Vega ( I love the way our old memories work!)
Susan Lentini-loved hearing from you, brought back lots of memories of a fun-filled simpler time. I remember your twin sisters and your house on 22 st. I thought you were so pretty and petite and I was chubby with glasses ( thank God I outgrew my baby fat and glasses became chic!)
I am still living in Brooklyn in the Bay Ridge area. My Mom , Josephine and Dad, Anthony are still with us and about to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Sept 11th!
I am married to my 2nd husband Paul for 19 yrs. and have one daughter from my first husband . She is named Jeanne and is 31 yrs old and is enjoying the single life and being a career woman!
congratulations on your upcoming blessed event. How many children and grandchildren do you have?
JUST WANT TO CORRECT A DATE FROM MY LAST COMMENTS. I GRADUATED FROM ST JOHNS IN 1963. NOT 1967. OH, THOSE SENIOR MOMENTS!
THANKS DEBBIE B. FOR THE INFO.I COULD NOT REMEMBER HER NAME WOW ANGELA BRUNO
Did anyone get married at the Hollywood Terrace and have their pictures taken are Marcy’s photo studio? Apparantly the best place to have your pictures taken.
Than we had gotten Albert’s photographer on fifth Avenue. I think he was married to Philaminia Bottelieri’s daughter.
I wonder where the Bottelieri’s are: Carl, Joseph and I think Annette.
hi franny bruno
i can’t believe its you. i have in front of me our year book from BayRidge and I have been looking people up. when you see the married name you think you don’t know them. I’m downstairs on the computer and I yelled up to Ken to see if he went to school with you and your right. He didn’t think he would know anyone at the reunion not going to St John’s but he’ll know as many as me.
It sure has been a long time. My daughter is laughing her ass off
at our year book and my prom pictures. Looking forward to seeing
everyone.
love Donna
twiggy:
I don’t know if you know me but your name is very familiar. Anyway
you asked about Annette and Carl B. them live on Staten Island.
I go to Curves with Annette almost everyday. Her husband passed away quite a few years ago. She has either 5 or 6 kids. She is doing well and has her mother living with her. Her brother Carl also lives on the Island.
Donna
