ROCCO, JR.
YEAH! YOU’RE BACK! “thinking” about the reunion is unacceptable! You must come. I’m dying to see you.
KAREN BOVAVITA,
you just made me cry. i cant even see the keys right now. thank you so much for your kind words.
I have to tell you my son michael who is 32 called when i got off the cruise and said you need a hall for your reunion. they all make fun of me and this blog but i guess he reads it once in awhile. he said ma the bonavita’s i remember when i was small and grandma and poppy would take me to church i could not wait to go home and play and every sunday they would leave church and stop and talk to big nick and his wife for so long. i told him get on and write but they all have my space and face book they would never come on. your parents were so nice and your dad was good friends with my uncle chubby perrotta. love terry
Hi Florence Its so great to talk to you. I told my sisters that the spelling was palma, but they told me i was wrong, but of course big sis is always right. HaHA how are you and the boys. Margaret and I talked for an hour. We had alot to catch up on. Some happy thing and some sad. How all our lives have changed. I visit Florida very often with my girlfriend, the next time i will call you. Im really looking forward to the reunion, I cant believe so many people are fron our neighborhood. Some of them are much youger than us I dont know them. well have to go i get up very early for work. Love to you, and hope to see you someday.
I remember collecting rags and papers and bringing them down 20th Street to the rag dealer who would weigh the bundles on huge scales and then pay us what couldn’t have been more than 15 cents.
“Going around for Thanksgiving” asking “Anything for Thanksgiving?” and always getting money (and some resistance considering that Halloween was just a few weeks before). Boys always dressed up as girls and all of us dressed as ragamuffins. The last time we went we were restricted to the apartment house on 20th and 7th, since “going around for Thanksgiving” was becoming a relic and we were getting too old to go out begging.
Father Salerno coming to our house for the yearly “house blessing” and my sister Janet and I hiding behind the wood pile in the back yard because we were so afraid of him.
Pat and Jimmy and Tommy and Sammy Fairchild teaching us all how to dance (Soldier Boy, Gee Whiz (Look at His Eyes), Tears on My Pillow, Shimmy Shimmy Coco Bop, etc.).
Marijane, Rita, and Irene Matula’s house and pool where we spent so much time.
Handball in the 19th Street playground; swimming at John Jay pool.
Sewing class after school at P.S. 10.
Bringing lemons to St. John’s to polish our desks on the last day of the school year.
Praying for the conversion of the Russians.
Another lifetime; another world.

DONNA REITZ HOW ARE U. I AM PATSY AUNT CAROL. PLEASE TELL YOUR SISTER MARYLOU HELLO FROM ME AND MY SISTER PAT. I SAW HER YEAR AGO AT THE CATHOLIC SCHOOL IN CARNARISE I THINK HOLY FAMILY WHERE SHE WAS PRINCIPAL. I WAS WORKING FOR THE DEPT. OF HEALTH DOING HEARING AND VISION SCREENING. I HOPE TO SEE U AND HER AT THE REUNION. PATSY, THE PIZZA PLACE WAS CALLED KINGS PIZZA AND U COULD ONLY BUY A WHOLE PIE NO SLICES. WE ALWAYS GOT PIZZA FROM THERE, DELICIOUS. ROSEANN PERROTTI, SO GLAD TO HEAR FROM U, I DON’T REMEMBER THE SATAN ANGEL BUT THEN AGAIN MY MEMORY IS TERRIBLE. I DO REMEMBER ROSANN MARIONS PARTIES, I ALWAY THOUGHT THEY WERE THE BEST AND SHE ALWAYS HAD THE BIGGEST BOWS ON HER DRESSES AND THE PRETTIEST BANNANA CURLS. TWIGGY, SPEAKING OF BANNANA CURLS YOUR MOM DID MY CURLS FOR MY CONFIRMATION, SHE PUT THEM IN RAGS EACH CURL INDIVIDUALLY AND I HAD TO STAY THE WHOLE DAY BEFORE CONFIRMATION WITH MY HAIR IN RAGS. DID SHE EVER DO YOUR HAIR LIKE THAT. EACH CURL CAME OUT PERFECT. I HAVE A PICTURE SOMEWHERE WITH MY HAIR IN RAGS, I REMEMBER THAT DAY LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY. TALK TO U ALL SOON. GOODNIGHT
Hi Camille

Judy Catalano
HI AUNT CAROL I HAD A FEELING YOU WOULD PROBABLY REMEMBER THE NAME OF THE PIZZERIA ON 4TH AVE. I REMEMBER IT TASTED SOOOOO GOOD THANX, LOVE YA π
CUZ TERRY THE PIX YOU SENT ME WERE GREAT. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL FAMILY. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING. LOVE YA π
Hi all
GOOD NITE ALL WE WILL TALK AGAIN TOMORROW π
Carol Miele – I personal note just to say thank you for your kind words ……………Lori Fiorito ……………….Joyce Castaldo…………Nilda Acevedo ……………..Pinky – Thank you for responding and the words of warmthness that truly touches my heart. I guess I’m an old sentimentalist. I came from the generation that said “Thank You”, helped people accross the street, and respected a female, and never forced an issue. It’s people like yourselfs that have brought new children into this world with the message of respect one another and honor. I also would just like to say as I take pen in hand or rather keyboard in hand – that I am doing well. I married a girl some 35 years ago and raised two wonderful children. One writes children books and the other is now a lawyer. My wife and I are still married and very happy. I have put many things behind me in my life but memories of growing up should never be tempered. Remember the story of “Kick the can” from the Trilogy of Twilight Zone? I think the man’s name was Scatman Crothers who showed adults how to feel young again. I miss those days and will always remember them. AND lastly – a little note to Dorothy Biscuiti – I do hope only the best of wishes for you and your family. You made me happy once and I’ll treasure it till the big clock no longer ticks.
Hi everyone :
What great memories, lot of names I remember and a lot of new ones. Hope you remember who I am — Margaret Palma Finizio, I lived on 22nd street between 5th & 6th ave. my sisters are Florence and Donna. I’m married to George, we have 3 daughters Donna 28, was married in October , my son-in law Tommy is a great guy, ( in fact my daughter Donna went to St John’s with Nicky Bonavita) Andrea and Nicole are both 21. I still live in Brooklyn, Mill Basin, but no matter what neighborhood you live in now, it will never take the place of where we came from. park slope (South Brooklyn) will always be where I came from and my home. I tell my daughters you could never imagine the fun or friendship we had as kids in the old neighborhood. everyone knew each other — our parents knew each other. It wasn’t just a neighborhood – it was one big family we came from.
Terry So much to catch up on can’t wait to see you i’m so happy Judy is coming up looking forward to seeing her too,
spoke to carol castaldo for over an hour the other night she filled me in on somethings we will fill in the rest when I see you.
James O So sorry to hear about Jeannie- she was the sweetest person I ever knew. I remember her walking up 22nd street everyday with her daughter stoped and talked to me and my mother. Saw her at a wedding a few years ago we had no idea we would be at the same wedding, we had a great time. love to your family.
Terry talk to you soon
Hello Maryann, Yes I seem to remember the Yazzo’s. Patsy Miele keeps mentioning them too. I can’t place the faces though. Nice that he remembers the Oliva’s.
Carol, that pizza place under us was great.. but I thought it was called something else. There was an old man who used to run it and there were tables to the right.
Hi Rocco, yes i will talk to you also, but you probably don’t remember me. I remember Sal, Joey and Virginia Crosbys from 6th ave. Elliot Diez will remember the pizzeria name.
Hey MICHAEL CLEMENTE! I put a few shout outs on here for you. I could not imagine where you had gone! Glad you’re back. Hey hop on a flight and come to the reunion! We need more people from our generation!
Hi Margaret Palmer Finizio,
I’m Anthony and Jeanne Oliva’s younger sister. You name is so familiar, but I cannot place the face. You lived on 23rd Street with Jeanne?
Who’s wedding did you see her at?
Thanks for remembering.
CAROLE MIELE,
You have me laughing so much about the rag curls my mother gave you. I do not remember her doing that to me.
I do remember when those hairpieces came out. It had to be 40 years ago. Remember, you would have a head of curls in the back instantly. Jeanne had one, Geraldine got one, but because I had the “twiggy” haircut, I did not have one. I remember going to the playground on 19th Street and 6th Avenue to take Easter pictures with my father, and pulling Geraldine’s hair piece off. Apparantly, I was not a very nice sibling.
MARGARET SQUEAKY PALMA,
GOT YOUR MESSAGE LAST NIGHT GOT HOME LATE WILL CALL TONIGHT. WHAT A JOY TO HEAR YOUR VOICE LAST NIGHT.
TWIGGY,

I remeber hanging with Paulie when you lived on 7th ave and even than you would crack me up……………and I was always more handsome than Nicholas…cmon now.
Ann Marie: I absolutly remeber that story about the hot dog, but in my defense Mike’s was in the water….lol. I always think of you when the telethon is on.

OMG: so much to read:
ROCCO JR: I also will talk to u, u may not know me, but i remember u and your sister when u were both very young; u were a good-looking child. are u still good looking? Will be glad to see u. I occasionally did your mothers hair, give her a “Hello” from me.
GARY: You sound like a great man, a woman’s dream come true.
SALLY EARS: We the same age; what a great age 62; U no longer worry what people think or say about u. U wear what U want to wear when U want to wear it, i wear white during the winter, i love white clothing. we have sowed our oats and paid our dues. will be glad to see u at the reunion.
THE JOYS: LINDA: I see u are addicted to the blog; i knew u would get a kick of it. You are as crazy as ever, (that’s good). Give my regards to Laura. i am up early, still decluttering my apt, and loving it i feel the energy flowing through it. If u come in contact with Annette, chicky’s wife, please give her my regards.
BARBARA: Hello hope all is well with you. Give my regards to your son. Betty had said, a while back, that he was a chef, does he work as a chef? Please give my warmest to Shelia Woods.
TINA: How is George liking his retirement? i pray all is well with u too. You commented that i sound like i am “full of life.” there is tooo much tragedy in this world not to appreciate what God has given you.
LIZZIE: Your time is getting closer; have a good time; you and your beau look good together. Have fun in Las Vegas. Maybe u could let me know when you will be up to visit Betty and if i could make it to the hospital that day i will go.
JEFFREY: Hope all is well with you and your daughters. Betty told me they are beautiful. take care.
A SHOUT OUT: to all of Donnie and Sheilas children; especially Peter. Your mom was dazzling and full of life. Maybe that was one of the first lessonS in life pertaining to appreciating life. Shelia really loved life and she surely enjoyed it.
ROSA & TERESA GOLINO: It finally hit me, i remember u both. The Oliva’s cousins. How are u? I hope fine. I am still alive and kicking. Do you still have family living on 6th ave. bet. 19 & 18th Street. I seem to remember one of Flories family purchasing a home there and revitalizing it.
PINKY: I am almost certain that Betty will remember you, She remembered me and the names my children. i am sure she would love to see u and David. Glad u are going to the reunion.
Barbar Spencer: i too remember remember Joe Beba; i loved his loose candy, and all his sweets, that’s why i am not allowed to eat sugar now, no type of sugar, i’m a pre-diabetic, loved his banana boats, and egg creams. His wife came here and she wanted to much from him, she was the death of the store. i have memorable thoughts of Joe Beba:
I too remember the Durante twins, but i can’t place the faces, (too much pot when i was much younger)
Does any one remember Joann Aversano married to Dimples, i thought the world of her and her mother. She also had a sister named Lisa, who lived i think for a short time on 23rd street. (Lisa had long pretty hair.)

Love Laura
TERRY ANGELO
Do you remember Miracle Corner, Ladyfair, The nylon store, back then when we only wore nylons and not pantyhose LOL. Also, the deli on 19th St. and 5th I believe it was Merkels, he made the best salads on earth. And what about White Eagle, I think they are still there. Those nasty brothers were so mean. Also do you remember the dentist on 18th street and 5th Ave. next to Regina Bakery. I think everyone use to go to him. He then moved to 19th street and 5th avenue. I remember having to walk up a giant flight of stairs to get to his office. Oh and what about that dress store also on 18th Street and 5th, I think it was called Aarons, they were only for the rich anyway. Blog me I would love to hear from. Talk to later.
Love Laura
Ann Marie Ischia

Patsy: Florence Blynn (maiden name) from 16th Street. She hung out with you when Jason was in grammar school. I think you went to each others house for lunch all the time.

TERRY ANGELO: I know I can speak for everyone on this blog and tell you that we are all so thankful to you for pulling this blog and the reunion together.
LORI ANGELO: For those who are not aware of this or do not have hours to scroll to the beginning of this blog, LORI ANGELO WAS the first one on from our group. She got the blog from Michael Schiralli and I’m so glad she spread the word. I know there are so many behind the scenes things you guys are doing and I’m sure I don’t even know all the other people involved.

XOX
LAURA MARSeALLA,
I think I remember the name of the dentist on 18th and 5th. Was it not Doctor Felder?
White Eagles is still there. Debbie Bonavita and I went there this past Easter break and purchased some Pierogies and Kielbasa, One brother was in the store and we even took a picture of him. His stuff is still delicious. In fact, I was watching the Food Network (Bobby Flay) and Boddy Flay was walking up 19th Street and made his way into White Eagle to purchase what he called the best hot dogs in town. I was histerical! They are famous and probably very rich those brothers.
Since we’re on 19th Street & Fifth Avenue, does anyone remember “Aaron’s” clothing store? Remember they had designer cloths in there. My sister Geraldine went in there from time to time.
Marilyn Horan – Do you know what ever happened to Frankie Letteri (Richie’s brother)… Johnny went to school with him & was asking about him.. Just wondering. Geri
TERRY ANGELO,
OMG, please don’t kick me out of the blog. I just mentioned “Aaron’s” clothing store above and did not see that you had already made mention of it just a few entries up. Can you ever forgive me? I promise to ALWAYS where my glasses and read thoroughly before mentioning a site.
TERRY, can you believe how more and more memories keep coming up? Just when you think we have remembered everything, someone brings up something else! It’s just wonderful.
Does anyone remember Maria Louise and Anna Maria Ventriglia? Their mother was Anna and their father was “Boc”. They moved to Pennsylvania and we got to see them a few times over the years. They lived on 21st Street closer to 5th Avenue. Like next to Nat’s.e
I also heard from Carol Consellatore (she was from 32nd Street), but I think they hung around with a few of you on this blog.
There was also The Venturelli Family on that block.
Janet Horan: I don’t think we know each other but I used to hang out with Pat Blynn for a while and was wondering if that was Florence’s sister or some relation. I remember Pat as being very glamourous with light blonde hair which she always had up in these huge rollers. I always wanted to look like her (lol.)
Judy Catalano: I spoke to Maria on her birthday (Aug. 2) and got the news about Billy. Very frightening and sad. Really want to get back. Hope to see you. Working on it.
