Good Morning All —
Want to say something to the ‘ORIGINAL BLOGGERS,’
e.g., Lucille Ball, Marie Crispino, Seraphine, Gerry Santolli – to name
a few… ‘We miss you!’
I realize the direction of this Site keeps shifting (as does the bloggers’ ages, thereby memories), and people (me included) drop in and out… Having said that…..
I think what I miss, are some of the posts of what we loved about Park Slope and specific, relevant, shared-memories. Maybe it’s all been said???
I am probably the least-experienced blogger on this Site – this is my first (and may be my last); I am not a blogger type. But maybe we need a sub-site that can be used as more of a chat-room.
Well, I just had to put that out there – not expecting a response.
Blessings to All!
Susan & Tommy,
Yes, they did paint the fence during extremely hot weather.
PLEASE stop calling my husband Dino. You are confusing me, I keep thinking you’re talking about my father!!!!!
Laura,
Of coarse I remember you and think about you often. Mom died on Christmas Day ( also her birthday ) 2004 and dad died Christmas day 2006. The last I heard you were working at Miamonadies. Laura my e-mail is [email protected]
CHARLIE MIELE –
Glad to see you are doing well…. When you were a young-one you reminded me of Dennis the Mennis (saying that affectionately).
I think you (??) were the one who asked the name of the men’s clothing store on 16th St, & 5th Ave. – I know the name, but not the spelling: Shnaffs (something like that). It was a front for the ‘operation’ that was going on in the back room.
My best to you, Charles! Look forward to seeing you 9/21.
LIZ –
I’ll give Jamsey your best tomorrow. When you’re commuting
back and forth from PA to Brooklyn – feel free to stop and stay here.
Not sure what route you take, I am Exit 17 off of Route 78 West (Flemington, Clinton, Washington). Your room will be waiting. xxx
GERI TORRES SANTOLLI –
Had some figs the other day and thought of your grandparents,
my next-door neighbors on 20th St. Their fig tree hung over
into our yard and we got to share with your family. What a
great, warm, and ‘sweet’ memory. See you soon!
FRANNY,
I agree. this is taking off in another way. A LOT OF THE ORIGINAL BLOGGERS DROPPED OUT. THEN NEW PEOPLE ARE NOT READING ALL THE ABOVE SO ALOT IS BEING REPEATED. PEOPLE ARE BLOGGING THINGS THEY CAN SAY TO EACH OTHER ON THE PHONE OR EMAIL. THIS IS LIFE EVERYTHING CHANGES. THE BEST THING IS THAT WE ALL CONNECTED WAY BACK WHEN AND WE ALL WILL REUNTE ON THE 21ST. SEE YA AT THE YACHT CLUB. LOVE TERRY
SANFTS IS THE NAME OF THE MENS CLOTHES STORE. DID SALLY DAGGET (SPELling) work there? SHORT GUY…..NOW THIS IS BLOGGING..MEMEORIES
To Fran: O.K. Here’s a memory. Does anyone remember how Joe the candy store man changed when he got married to the German girl. They had a baby and she made him close the candy store and get a regular job. He always looked so unhappy coming home from work with his lunch box. If I remember correctly, he died of a heart attack only a few years after that. I remember going into Joe’s on the days the new Archie & Vermonica comic books came in. (I took Veronica as my confirmation name – too funny!) Also, used to drive him crazy standing at the penny candy counter in the back until we made our choices! I think a whole little brown bag of candy was about 10 cents. Loved the wafer-like flying saucers, the candy dots on long paper, sugar frosting that came in little tin cups, royal jellies, green leaves, etc. I could go on and on. And how about those egg creams and banana boats? Now they were special.
Terry- I worked in Sanft’s during my high school years.. I mention this more than a few times above..hope your having a nice day.
Charles, I tell you about Sanft’s somewhere up above.
Franny- Give Jamesy a kiss for me tomorrow.and tell him I love him. don’t let him talk to much and dominate the conversation, and don’t let him say anything bad about me..!! lol.Have fun..
BARBARA,
boy i remember joes and his YOUNG german or polish wife. AH!!!!alot of memories with teddy wozny, anna marie romanelli, donna reitz, gagliardis’s, diane guccione mickey shannon alot more thanks for the memories at joes. i know we mentioned this store before but not the way you did. wow the penny candies just like jacks and hymies on 5th avenue. WE HAD ROCCO ON 5TH YELLING AT US AND JOE ON 7TH AVENUE. it must of been a candy store attitude with all the yelling from the owners but we loved it. love terry NOW THIS IS BLOGGING ABOUT THE SLOPE,
Hi Terry: Yes, I think you’re right. She was Polish. And does anyone remember going into Steve’s grocery store to vote for Miss Rheingold? Also, how about making out on 24th Street bet. 5th and 6th. Also, making out in the doorways behind the 23rd St. Park? If one was already in use you just moved on to another.
hello all great to see the blog growing

TERRY BOY HAVE WE GROWN. YOU MENTIONED NAME TAGS THIS MAYBE A GOOD IDEA.
HOW DO WE GET THE MONEY TO YOU.
ANNIE AND LOIUISE ,WHERE ARE YOU.? CALL ME
Hi BARBARA –
I know we all remember the penny-candy and what a thrill to pick out so many fun things. My favorite was the fake wax fingernails, with red polish. (Guess that’s why I make sure my nails are always done). The nails matched the red WAX lips. Then we’d eat the wax. The log pretzels were expensive 2-Cents, and were kept on the counter.
My sister and I lived for Archie and Veronica, Reggie, Betty and of course Jughead! Till this day, I occasionally buy her one of their comic books as a joke. (Boy they are expensive today; think we spent 19 cents – and if that’s true, that was expensive in those days.) Do you remember those “adult magazines†written mostly for mature women. Can’t remember the titles (maybe something with ‘intimate’ in it), but they had stories that we’d probably find corny today (corny not horny). Think they used the word breast. I remember ‘hide-reading’ my mothers/sisters, cause it was like having a porn magazine.
Back to penny candy – Do you remember LUCILLE DECANIO (she remembers you)? – We would buy a bunch of candy and then go for a walk through Greenwood Cemetery, as if it were a walk in the park. Do you realize how dangerous that would be today? We were very young.
LUCILLE – if you are reading…Hello… It’s Franwiskers…Parlez-vous Francais?
To ALL –
I just spoke to Jamsey to confirm tomorrow’s lunch. He said he’s read the blog, and we all need a life!
And that’s what I’m going to do right now… Have a good day!!!!
BARBARA –
one of the ‘adult’ magazines i refer to above was called
“True Confessions”
Francesca
I remember the name of one of those books you talked about was
True Confessions…..if I am correct… I remember hiding and reading them also……..lol
Francesca…
see someone already beat me to it….lol
have a great day
Sanfts. It was the place you shopped if you wanted to look your best. Great window displays and you would send your Mom, sister & girlfriend to get your christmas presents. Next door there was jewelry store and I remember an applience store at the corner. Can’t remember the name. It was the place were you could put items on lay-away (The begining of the dreaded Credit Card). I remember refrigirators and TV’s out on the sidewalk. Of course the 72nd precint was across the street. I also believe Carvels ice cream was on the same block, or maybe a block over. Does anyone remember the name of Bar on 4th avenue between 17th & 18th street. It was on the right side if you were going to the subway (Prospect Ave.) station from 18th street.

Hello Everyone,
I was just told about this site. We are the Trimboli’s and Biscuiti’s from 20th and 21st streets. My dad is Steve Trimboli (age 93) and my Mom was Mary(nee Biscuiti, died 1989). Brothers are Frank and Louis Trimboli. Some of my cousins are Betty, Camille and Dorothy Biscuiti, Angelo and Vincent Corradino(died 1993). We had such a big family within a few blocks of each other. My aunt put is right one day by saying, the memories of 21 street can never have a price tag put on it, they are priceless! So many wonderful people and so many of the family names are memtioned on this site and I remember them all! I can say one thing, what we had in the old neigborhood with our parents and grandparents generation, we will never see again. Me personally, I could write for hours on here mentioned all of your families and what fond memories I have of then through my parents, aunts, uncles and cousins.
I live in NJ and I try to expalin to my sons what it was like having so much family around you and everyone knew each other.
I told my brothers about the site and I will see my cousins this weekend in Chicago for a family wedding. Betty’s daughter is getting married. Regards to all of you.
P.S. D’amico’s made the best 7 layer cookies. Angelo’s on 25th Ave. has the receipe for years, and I now drive in from NJ to buy them for my boys.
OMG,

REMEMBER YOUR MOM AND DAD SO WELL. I REMEMBER YOUR DAD ALWAYS WALKING UP 20TH STREET. WHAT WONDER FUL PARENTS. ARE YOU THE YOUNGEST OUT OF THE BOYS. I KNOW LOUIS IS AROUNF MY AGE 57 AND THERE WAS AN OLDER BROTHER. ANGELO’S BAKERY ON 25TH AVENUE. I OWN A HOUSE RIGHT UP THE BLOCK FROM THERE. WE KNOW ANGELO. I DID NOT KNOW HE HAD THE RECEIPE FOR THE COOKIES GOOD TO KNOW. YUMMY I CAN STILL TASTE THEM AND THE ICES. LOVE TO THE SCHWEERS AND TRIMBOLIS ESPECIALLY DAD GOD BLESS HIM AT 93. LOVE TERRY ANGELO
FIRST CHECK IN TODAY FOR THE REUNION. THANKS BARBARA SPENCER.
Hi LINDA JOY…. Nice to ‘see’ you again.
In one of my earlier posts I mentioned Calacino’s tuna fish.
I have not forgotten it till this day. Remember we’d wait on
a long line at lunch time, and it would be wrapped like a large loaf of Italian bread. I think it was the celery in there that made
it so good. Sometimes my mother would make me lunch,
and I’d give it away, just to have one of those tuna sandwiches.
There was also a candy store on 7th ave across Prospect Ave.,
on same side of street as 10’s – and they made the best greasy
french fries. The would come in a paper cone-type cup. The best!
I can’t believe I was out and about… and now back to this Site.
Even after shutting off my computer…
Terry Ann (and everyone else),
I met Richard Lettieri several years ago and had a brief on-line correspondence with him. He lives in California now and is a psychotherapist. The Trimbolis were mentioned in this blog. Is Joseph Trimboli related to those mentioned? And the Santolis–where is Philip?
Here are a few of my memories:
I used to hang out in front of Atlas Bank and depending on how late or how noisy we were the old Polish woman who lived above the bank would open the window and throw hot water on us! Which prompted us to make more noise and ask for soap.
One night the guys were roughhousing and Robert Brooks got thrown thru Atlas’s front glass door. No iron gates in those days! What a mess – no one was hurt, there was glass all over the place, the alarm was blaring and the cops came and hauled all of us to the precinct. I escaped a penalty because my mother was the crossing guard and the cops knew her, but I wasn’t able to go out for a month after that one!
There was an old woman (I think her name was Mary) who lived over D’Amico’s Pastry shop and she would watch our every move then call all our parents and report to them what we were doing. She ratted me out and called my mother to tell her that I was smoking! There was hell to pay that night!
And, lastly, the one other memory that stands out in my mind was a very cold night in the dead of winter when a group of men came out of Toto Marino’s bar and headed down 20th St. (toward 4th Ave). We heard what we thought were firecrackers and the next thing we knew we all had an audience with Toto himself about what we DIDN’T see/hear! Scary stuff.
All the memories, the nuns at St. Johns, the Fr. Sclafani repetorie of “Animal Crackers”, Prayer + Study = Success, singing Happy Birthday to the Blessed Mother over the PA system in school, hearing him sing “I Wish I Were Single Again” at the bazaars, the bazaars at St. John’s & St. Rocco’s, rollerskating at St. Rocco’s on Thursday afternoons, release time on Wednesday’s, walking 5th Ave. to window shop, shopping at Miracle Corner or Lady Fair, and tons of other stuff that I’m sure I’ve forgotten is what made living there, as well as all the people, the best place in the world to live.
’nuff said.
Karen D(ritto)
Camille…
I’m about two hours from S.I We can make the drive in; it’s just that I have trouble walking. My email address is [email protected]. I thought you couldn’t make the reunion???
Linda Joy…
That’s me but I was never called “Champ”!?! Speaking of Ro and Laura… where are they?
Linda Joy: I remember Colasenos. Everyone hung out there at lunch time. He must have made a fortune with us.
Speaking of St. Rocco’s ……..I was in the Drum and Bugle Corp. when I was a kid from 34th st.
Did anyone else march in it?
And what about Sunday afternoon dances in St. Rocco’s basement?
“Let’s All do the Hop?

I remember Colaciano’s too!!!! Great tuna sanwiches, couldn’t go wrong for 35 cents…..we would pool our lunch money to buy a pack of cigarettes and still be able to have lunch because it was so cheap……..and Linda remember Roe Retina’s Dad use to come by school every afternoon to bring her lunch, and remember at lunch time we would go to Lenore Addali’s house on 7th avenue between 19th and 20th street and all the girls would fix their hair and use a ton of hairspray to keep it in place……..and Milmoe’s Grocery store on 21st. and 7th avenue…tasted my first loose frankfurter there and also Dr. Pepper……..Sunset Pool, 10 cents to get in, spent the entire day, got a little basket to put your clothes in and got a numbered bracelet to retrieve your clothes, caterpillars walking all over the stone fences….beautiful sunsets by the park…

Florence, since we found you I see you even stay up later writing on this blog. It’s great.
One of the Trimbolis sang at St. John’s on my wedding day. Great voice. Any relation? I believe he was related to Joan Cavallo from 22nd Street closer to 6th Avenue. Maybe I have the name wrong.
Francesca
I think the mens store your are referring with the “operation in the back room” was called Chuck and Jacks on 5th av.
Rudy Gil
I think the jewlery store was Gary’s which eventually moved to around 11th street and 5th. The appliance store I believe was named Lincoln’s
Talking about Milmoe’s. Does anyone remember Michael (loved the dance Mashed Potato) and Dorothy Milmoe? I believe they graduated St. John’s in the late 50’s, early 60’s. I believe Dorothy went on to St. Edmond’s High School. They were friendly with Maryann and Billy Niemczynski. They all lived near 22nd Street and 7th Avenue.

Remember the neighborhood police station? I forgot what street it was on. But I remember one night me and Pat Kane got caught looking in the windows with binoculars from across the street. We got in trouble for that. They brought us in the police station and asked what we were doing? They were taking this very seriously. They finally let us go with a warning never to do that again. Also, I remember being caught in a stolen car on 5th Avenue with Henry Spinnato. Of course, I didn’t know it was stolen. He told me it was his. Had to go to court for that and told them what happened. Everything was dropped for me. Thank God my mother never found out. I was scared out of my wits. Needless to say, I never got in another car with Henry again. I think he had to go back to court though. Don’t know what happened to him.
