Do you remenber the fist fight we had on 21st. street. It started down the block in the lot and ended at Damico’s. We fought over a girl I think it was Catherine Palladino. Anthony sorry to say but I won the fight. Someone was asking for Catherine on the blog. Catherine married Thomas Ischia. That was one of the best kept secrets on 21st street. Thomas is a dentist he has an office on 75th street. Saw Catherine atnd Thomas at my daugthrer Toni-Ann’s wedding she married one of Thomas cousin’s small world.

Terry
Are you yelling at me?? LOL- Count me in, where ever it will be, I will bring one of those long heros or something of that nature.
Anthony Rizzo: You may have won the fight but Catharine was my girlfriend-
I think I won the next two fights we had. Were you envious of me because I had the same first name as you ? Let’ not go Mano Mano here though.
I was out to dinner with Thomas and Catherine last week-end- I see them often with my two close friends Albert and Adele.
Anthony Riz:
Catherine is aware of the blog, I told her all about it and so did her sister in law Ann Marie.
Oliva family, remember when you lived on 4th ave between the gas station and Tony’s junk shop. Hated that building. My grandmother Connie made me walk up those stairs at least twice a day. I didn’t mind when there was Ebinger’s Metropolitans waiting for me but did mind when I was delivering things back and forth between grandma and your mother.
Gagliardi family, remember going to your Grandma Clara’s house on 21st across from Bonavita’s. Part of the circuit – Flo Oliva, Clara Gagliardi, Sonny & Jeanette Gagliardi, Caroline Iorio (with an occasional stop in Negri’s Bar for grandma to have a beer). Sonny & Jeanette were the best. Sonny Gags got me involved in coin collecting when I was 9 – turned me on to the U.S. Mint. Probably a good thing – used my tip money from the butcher to buy coins and stay out of trouble. No Michael Gags, I will not sell you my comics. Hated Rocco, always bit my arm. Actually liked the guy alot and Millie was real nice also and she had a calming effect on Rocco. I remember your grandma Clara cursed alot but was a wonderful lady. Must be where Rocco got it from. At least once a year St. John’s would ban us from going into the candy store. Why was your grandfather called the Sheriff?
The candy store on 23rd Street, Jeanne’s I think was the name, for some reason I remember that being the place to buy cigarettes. I didn’t smoke but Vinny Aversano did and that was the place to get “loosies”. Me, I went for the candy assortment.
Castaldo family, remember you all. Carol was the oldest so I did not have much interaction with her, Rosalind always dated Rizzo and Maria always dated Vinny who I thought of has one of my best friends along with Joey Tombasco & Eugene Cresci.
Eugene Cresci was something else. To this day I tell people that he was probably the best all around athlete I ever saw (sorry Rizzo). Kid was a great baseball player, could throw a footbal a mile (again, sorry Rizzo) and in basketball made three point shots before there was a such thing as three point shots. Not to mention he was a great looking kid – got that from his mother Cecilia. I remember his father singing a version of the Simon & Garfunkel song -“Cecelia you’re breaking my balls….” Good people. Eugene died much too young.
Just got off the phone with cousin Terri Angelo. Think reunion getting too big for her house. Options are yacht club in S. I., my horse farm near Great Adventure or, I suggested Smolens Bar on 22nd Street & fifth ave. The lady who runs it is a client and I am sure I can get us use of bar in exchange for buying drinks. This might be the best choice since it is in old neigborhood or the VFW Post next door if it still there or St. Anna’s Club another possibility
Anthony Rizzo – Yes I do remember you coming to Fla. and lending you my car. Also telling all the kids that Joe Namath is in my house. How are you & Roz. I am living in S.I. near Arthur Kill Rd. & Arden Ave. (Village Greens). Also remember being your boss in Seafarers. Yes I also worked in Seafarers on 20th st. Left there in 1971.
Carol Castaldo – Did you live on 20th Ave & I believe 59th St?
Lucia – where are you???
Lizzie Joy – Donny is doing okay. Taking his treatments and meds.
Danny Lovaglio – Tell your mom and dad I said hello. Will E-mail.
GARY D,
I saw biscutti’s cousin in church today and gave her the message to contact you. i think your story is a very touching story. i hope she comes on this blog or contacts you. love terry

Terry-
I have to call James anyway. I guess you already know if you scrool to the very bottom and work your way up to the most recent entries it’s easier. That’s what I do. You might have to accept you just can’t read it all…lol-
Yes there are yet another set of friends from Charles and Patsy Miele’s universe. Ralph Marsella world also, and others that have changed the direction of the blog. But we are still all enmeshed in some way shape or form. That’s the beauty of it all.
Charles you have an amazing memory.
Sorry but I don’t remember you, but I feel I should, because I certainly knew Vinny Aversano, his mom and dad, and everyone you’ve mentioned that were part of your life. How much younger than Patsy are you?
Hi, Mea Cupa for not saying hello to everyone when I first wrote. Hi Patsy, Terry, Joyce, Maria, Carol ( The Castaldos), Laura, Carol M, and my best friend Geraldine. Rocco Jr., your father was the best as well as Sonny. Janet
Does anyone remember a Mary Hertkorn (spelling) but that’s how it’s pronounced? She lived with her mother on 15th Street just below 5th, in the first house off that appliance store on the corner of 15th street. She had short blond hair, and I remember her always coming into Parker and Megna with her Mother.
Hi To All,
Miele’s – Charlie I remember lots of Miele’s..I went to school with your cousin Stephanie…You are a little older than me so you probably remember my sister Laura Giordano….
Someone mentioned Father Stranese…when I heard about his death on the news I was shocked…he was such a big part of St. John’s and I also met up with him again at Bishop Kearney…
Waltons…Hi AnnMarie and Michelle…..I don’t remember your siblings too much..but I did remember you had a brother. You mentioned roller skating at St. Roccos’ how could I forget…every Thursday afternoon I lived right across the street…I could still hear
the music. Also the women who worked there…Regina Deitrich…didn’t she have a son David??
Good memory Charlie I also remember Jeanne’s where you can buy “loosies” I think for five cents each???
Oliva’s….is there a brother Michael…..if so he attended our 1972 reunion back in 2002 (?) and is this Michael related to Jeannie who recently passed away? If so and even if this is not the right Michael Oliva, my condolences to you whole family.
Keep the memories coming….Judy Giordano/Banjany
Oh one more thing…I still remember the “Teen Club”…what was the guy’s name (a young guy) who ran the teen club…I could still picture him blowing that damn whistle…… Judy Giordano

I am waiting – lol
HI CHARLIE MIELE,
I’m one of the younger Oliva sisters. Well, not so young any more. I’m 45 years old now. Nice to see you’re on the blog.
I saw your Aunt Carol at Jeanne’s wake. It was so nice to see her. This may sound silly, but there were so many people from the past, I almost wish I had a camera. That would probably be a first at a funeral. The outpouring of love was just wonderful and so deserving for a sister like Jeanne.
I have lived in Weston, Florda now for the past 8 years and have two children. Thomas is 7 and my Julia Grace is almost 3. Do you have children? Does Angela have plans on entereing this blog?
Take care for now.
JUDY GIORDANo,
We have a counsin Michael Oliva. He would be around the age of 47 I believe.
The Oliva Family of Florence and Anthony are: James (59), Anthony (57), Jeanne was 52 when she passed this July 17th, Geraldine (47), Christina (45), John (would have been 46, but passed away at the age of 10, and Paul (41).
Hope this helps you. I definately know your name, but I cannot get your face in mind just yet. We really need to see pictures. Since I live in Florida, I’m not sure if I can attend the reunion, but if I don’t, I know I will regret it. This past year, I have been to NJ several times to be with Jeanne and with two small children, it’s not easy to go back and forth. I’m really going to try though.
Take care.
HI MARIA CASTALDO,
I gave a shout out to your mother’s split pea soup about a week ago, Please let your mother know that I remember how delicious it was.
ROCCO GAGLIARDI, JR.
WHERE THE HECK ARE YOU? Don’t tell me you actually have a life other than this blog!
EVERYONE:
FRIENDS THAT NEED TO LOG IN: THE GUZZO BROTHERS, THE PICCONE BROTHERS, JOHN YAZZO, to name a few.
I am filled with such emotione reading all of the letters as I was born on 21st.between 5 & 6th. I went to St Johns, and we lived 3 houses up from the school. My aunt Ida and Uncle Benny owned the store on 21st and 6th ave. He made the best egg creams ever.
We lived next to the Diana and Nicky, and acroos the street was the Gagliardis. My brothers Pat, Sal, and Joey all had a ball in the neighborhood. My mememories are of St Johns School, and most of all my friends like Dee, Jeannette, Anna , Maryanne, and so many others. Dee D’ambra lives 15 minutes from me. We meet Bo Santo all the time, and we go see him sing and he does some job. Born on 21st. what else would you expect. He is here in Florida. If anyone out there knows or hears anything about Maryanne Ragusa, we would love to here from her. We were all good friends and do no know where she is. I have nothing but good memories, of the IceCream Parlors, movies, Germains at Christmas with all the beautiful dools and displays, and do not forget the waffles and ice cream. Take care and keep all the memories coming, we love them.
I also had friends from 19th st. between 5th and 6th that went to PS 146, what good times and memories at that school. If you are reading this Mary Anne please let us know where we can contact you.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE FOR FRANKIE “MUSH” MANZIONE !

Ralphie were are you.
Nilda sorry I missed the 23rd. I was away.
Anthony Oliva be good. You won’t want us to get Jamsey after you.
Love everyone and be well.
Love 21st, and lived next to St Johns School and I went there, and was so afraid of Sister Lioba and and Father Sala. I loved growing up in the neighborhood with the Gagliardi, Johnny, Rocco, Jeannette etc. the D’Ambras Dee, Diana, Rose, Lillian etc. Dee lives 20 minutes from me. I loved Germains at Chistmas time, 5th ave. the movies, the Ice Cream Parlors. My Aunt Ida and Uncel Benny had the store on 21st.and 6th and he made the best Egg Creams going. I had friends on 19thst.between 5th @ 6th who went to 146. I often wonder where they are now. Dee and I are looking for Maryanne Ragusa who lived on 21st between 4th and 5th. anyone who reads this might know where she lives now.
Bo Santo who lives here and has the best voice and does the 50’s songs comes from 21st also. We go to see him all the time.
Great times, best neighborhood when we grew up. My brothers Pat,
Sal, Joey Fucci all remember such good times there. Again Maryanne if anyone knows where she is now. Love Anna Marie
Everyone,
This reunion should be held right on Fifth Avenue between 21st and 22nd Street. In fact, you could probably get a permit to close off the block like we did for the block parties. To make it extra special, you get the Marsala band together to perform and Karen Bonavita could sing with them again.
For an added touch, you rent a hot dog cart, hire “the whip” and “king kong” ride and have them give out jelly apples after everyone takes their ride.
Saint Anna’s club would be perfect! They had the kitchen downstairs in the club and ample space upstairs. How fun would it be to hang out on those streets again so many years later. I’m sure Luigi’s could provide some lemon ices and we could get a stick ball game together. There are even a few old timers still living in that neighborhood (i.e. Mickie Galdo, Ray & Mary Tombasco, Ann Schiralli, we’ll get Tessi Gags, Millie Gags and Florie Castaldo to come as well). I’m telling you, it would be awesome!
I’m sure Saint John’s Church would even hold a special mass before the party to give us all a little blessing. How wonderful would it be to all congregate in the church we all grew up in!
We could even do a tour of the old neighborhood!
You know anywhere we meet would be great, BUT FIFTH AVENUE! FORGET ABOUT IT!
Anna Marie Fucci
Aunt Dee and I were just talking about this site. She spent most of last night reading and was filled with so many fond memories.
Christina Oliva Hagin
I agree 21st sounds great. I would sing if you sing Sweet, Sweet Loretta.
Maria Castaldo,
The GridIron, was on about 76th street and 3rd avenue in Bay Ridge. What’s a senior moment?? lol
Terry: I just called you and left a message. I’m coming, and I will bring one of those long heros. I know my brother Paul is coming and Geri, that’s if I have the ok to speak for them.
BTW-I’m not bragging, but I could make a very very good sauce, full blown with sausage and meat balls- ask Christina how good my sauce is.. but you would have to beg me to make it, and there is no gaurantee that I would do it, even if I said yes. Because, of my work schedule. So I’ll do the long hero
Lucia, Your the one who got me into this, and your off living your life coming on once every two weeks, nice and short and sweet. I’m trying to reconcile my past, this is not a past time, it’s a serious matter…lol-lol- Jamesy probabley told you I take myself way too seriously..and I will never forget that shutter job, as long as I live. How is Deitzy doing. Give him a kiss for me..Thanks for watching out for Paul and Geri., we love you too.
Wow: I have only been away for 2 days and I have to catch up on so much, I feel for you Terry Sherman; the Fundraiser went well, will update u on a later date.
FRANCESCA (BRUNO0 SARACINO: Gee MATRIARCH!! many people have called me mannnyy names but never MATRIARCH, doing hair brought me in contact with a diverse people, that was one of the reasons I loved doing hair. The beehive with curls was one of my signature hairdos; your name also rings a bell, like so many of the names on this blog. I am looking forward to seeing you on the retreat. Thank you for your condolences, you are right, I know I will see my sister again when my time on earth is up. Thank you for ur kind words.
BOBBY ANN LENTO (SUARATO): Thanks for asking for my family and me, all is well thank God. I am semi-retired and loving it. I owned and managed a grocery store on 17th Street on 3rd Avenue for 18 years that was hard work, I used to work lonnnngggg hours; I decided to close up shop almost 4 years ago, and I have no regrets. I am in the middle of a situation, but I know that God will get me through. I am a grandmother, of a (as all grandmothers say) a beautiful, precious little 2 year old girl Victoria Rose. Wendy is 42 and Eddie is 41; thank God they are both fine. I am doing well, peaceful, I am involved in a few Ministries in church, and on this Cancer Committee plus I see my granddaughter often. All of that keeps me busy. I was listening to WBAI 99.5 it’s a free radio station, and they play the best Latin Music on the air, they play the old Latin, Tito Rodriguez, Macheto and the like, plus they play the good new wave Latin music. This week they were honoring Ray Barretto and Richie Ray, and I thought of the days when I did you and Loretta’s hair, I knew little about make up and the world, I would watch you put on your make up perfectly and dress in your beautiful clothes, you 2 made some impression on me. I wanted to look pretty like you and Loretta. I don’t know if I ever told you that, so I am telling you know, you 2 were some of my shero’s. I hope u and your family are well.
ANTHONY OLIVA: I gave Wendy the message. Remember when she used to call u Agony she couldn’t pronounce your name. Be well.
CHRIS: It’s hard to believe that you are 48 years old; I think everyone sported a beehive, banana curls or the like. I will be calling your Moms this week. Tell them I love them.
PATSY M: I love your description of friends sounds “angels without wings,†I also like “Friends are family that God did not give us.†Hope you are fine.
PAT GAGLIARDI: Thanks for the sweet words, u thought I was cool and I thought you guys were the greatest. (Mutual admiration club) I loved going to your house, your parents always made me and my children feel at home, (that goes for the entire Gagliardi clan) I never felt that I was only there on business. I grew up in a quiet home, no cussing or any worldly stuff, it was always church, church, and more church. I guess that is way I loved the Gags, I learned many many good things from the Gags. I will always treasure them. Looking forward to seeing you at the reunion.
RALPHIE SUARATO: I always thought you and Donnie were the Bomb. You guys were so on the money. No Ralphie I do not do hair any more. Although my friend Donna Maxil talked me into cutting her hair this summer, I told her she was taking her life in her own hands. (Ha)
CHRISTINE O. I am working on the recipe for the ‘Pastelles†if you come to the reunion I will get u some. Luv u.
GERALDINE: I’ll call u this week, and we will continue reminiscing, sitting on your porch with Victoria Rose and talking was sweet, but this time either I leave earlier from your house or I will take the car. The darkness there is boohoo dense. Luv u.
DEBBIE BONAVITA: Please give Rosie my heartfelt, warmest wishes, I did her hair the longest. It’s hard to believe that she is 86 yrs old. She was always so full of life. I remember when your grandparents died, she as well as your other aunts mourned for so long. I do not want to be pushy, I just wanted to make a friendly call. If they are not up to it that is fine.
LIZZIE JOY: Boy I was really glad to see u on this blog; congrats on your coming marriage; so u are taking the plunge. When did you move here from Texas? I wanted to go and see Betty last week but with the pending Fundraiser it was difficult, but I do plan on going this week that is for sure. I will always consider your family as part of me, your family was the 1st family to welcome me on 23rd street. Betty treated me so well. Remember going to Jeans for the frappes and the egg creams. I will give Lilly yur regards. I will also give her this blog maybe she will get on.
LINDA JOY: it’s so nice to see u on this blog. It was even nicer talking to you; give my regards to that great husband of yours. You always had a knack to make me laugh, u were always crazy, maybe that’s why we got along so well. Don’t be so anti-social and call, u have the #. Kisses to your grandchildren.
Well I have taken up enough space. Be well all and Blessings to all.
Christina……I’m with you. What better place to get together for a reunion but where we all grew up!!!! Maybe we could get someone to dress up like basalona and don’t forget the johnny pump sprinklers!!!!!!!
Would you believe even my aunt dee found this site and she loves it.

Hi Christine,
I agree. Love your idea!!! I was one of the people who helped have the 5th Ave bus re-routed to close 5th Ave for the block party. How cool would it be to do it again. Hate to loose touch with everyone after all the effort of bringing everyone together after so many years.
We can plan to do this again in the spring – there are so many of us online we could form a committee and set it up so we could bring our families too! Then anyone who misses this event surely can plan to be at the next.
Terry Angelo Sherman – see what you started !!! lol
