  5. Hey Terry Angelo! Remember me? Marilyn Horan. Nine years in St. John’s. My sister is Janet and my brother Bobby? Hi everybody else. I still live in Brooklyn, but not in Park Slope. Graduated St. John’s in 1964, good friends with Linda Synowiec, Eileen Mistretta, Georgette Magnavita.
Who remembers Father Sclafani singing his alma mater song: “Shout hurrah for old Niagara, and her lovely scenery”? Mrs. Fazio with her skirt stuck in her girdle after a visit to the ladies’ room and nobody dumb enough(but me) to tell her, but let her keep writing on the board? Then she yelled at ME!
When the plane crashed on 7th Avenue, the principal called me, my brother, my sister, and my cousin down to the office to tell me my grandmother was killed by the plane. But she was MISTAKEN! Granny was not near the crash.
How about Sister Cornelia who gave us the answers to social studies tests by emphasizing, yelling really, the correct answers as in : Columbus discovered America in a. 1432 b. 1422 C. 1492!!!!! d. 1543
I hated always being last on the line for communion, etc. and was so glad when Virginia Johnson came to the school in 6th grade because she was taller than I. Janice Campesi and Grace Coen were always so cute and always first on line and sitting in the “first or second seat, first row.” Remember sometimes the nuns would seat you according to your grades? Imagine doing that today! Gold stars! Red stars! Blue stars! JMJ (Jesus, Mary, and Joseph) as a heading on all papers.
The coming of the ball point pen that the nuns were sure would be the end of civilization as we knew it–no more blotters and bad handwriting. And what about “South Sea Blue” ink, that we were prohibited from using–black or midnight blue only.
If anybody out there wants to contact me my email address is: [email protected]. I would love to talk to former classmates.

    Sally Ears
I know you remember me, childhood sweethearts Laura and Joe Marsella. We were together for 100 years, got married than divorced. Do you remember you taught me way back in the 60s how to dance whatever dance was popular at that time. What great memories. Do you remember my godmother Margie. She lived on 6th Avenue a few doors away from Rose Marsella. She was crazy too!!. I would love to see you the reunion if you are going. Keep in touch at least on this site. Laura Marsella

See you, keep in touch.

  18. VINNY BONAVITA:

Hi sweetie. So glad you’re on the site. You were the cutest boy in town and than your brother, Nicholas was born (haha). Just kidding. Great, great memories of you and Paul and hanging out at your house. You mother made the best baked Pasta with Potatoes (don’t know how to spell it in Italian). I heard Gina makes the recipe closest to your Mom. Hopefully, she will share the recipe with me. Your family has grown so much and it is wonderful. Do you remember when your parents used to sing and they cut a demo? I do! My favorite song was, “It’s a marshmellow World”. For years I thought they wrote the song as well and when I heard the song on the radio, I said, hey, that’s Nick and Diane’s song. Remember when your Dad put the pool in your backyard? What a blast.

Hope all is well with you and your family. I can’t wait to see all of you the next time I’m in town.

GINA, KAREN, DEBBIE — Pass along the recipe of the Pasta with Potatoes. I can taste it right now !!!!

  19. HI LAURA I REMEMBER YOU. YOU WERE ALSO VERY GOOD FRIENDS WITH DIANE GUCCIONE BACK IN THE DAY. YOU 2 GIRLD ALWAYS HAD THE NICEST CLOTHES. I AM DIVORCED FROM NAT FOR MANY YERAS NOW. I AM REMARRIED (16 YEARS ALREADY) AND HAVE A 13 YEARS OLD GIRL WITH MY SECOND HUSBAND. NAT ANT I HAD 2 CHILDREN AS YOU MIGHT REMEMBER. JASON 33 NOW AND NATALIE JUNE 27 MARRIED TO A MRINE TURNED FIREMAN. ALL IS GOOD. I WILL SEE YOU AT THE REUNION TALK SOON 🙂

  20. Hi Nilda,

I have not spoken to you since Jeanne’s passing, sorry! It was wonderful to see you and of course, you look AWESOME.

I had some good times in your apartment on 5th Avenue. Wendy and I would sit on your couch and sing, “On Top of Spaghetti” over and over again. There was always music playing and I remember you dancing alot. My mother loved when you did her hair. She loved you, Nilda, and we all love you too.

Since I’m always talking about “food”, I was wondering if you know how to make “pasteles”. I don’t remember having them at your house, but I love them and cannot find them. I know they are difficult to make. Let me know if you have a recipe.

Hope to see you soon. All my love.

  21. To Marilyn Horan — I’m the tall one — Veronica Jackson — graduated with your sister Janet, Carol Castaldo, Margaret Dritto, Georgette. How is Janet?

  22. Laura Marsella…

Yes, I remember teaching you to dance. Your aunt in-law (at the time), Marie taught me to dance for the first tine… the cha cha.

I don’t think I’ll be able to make the reunion as I have trouble walking due to this damn stroke. Here’s wishing you all a good time.

    Sal

  23. TWIGGY OLIVA HAGIN
First of all, don’t ever put Gina’s name before mine on this blog. LOL.
I make the recipe for Pasta with potatoes (Bastabadon) that’s closest to my Mothers. I will email it to you. Debbie’s two youngest children are visiting with me and, I plan to make that while they are here. Do you remember me cleaning out the pool with plastic bags on my feet? YUCK! I don’t know which sibling of mine has the old 78 records of my parents singing, especially my Father singing Marshmallow World. I thought my memory was good, you are unbelievable.

    PAUL OLIVA
Your family has always been a part of the Bonavita family. They always will be.

    CLOTILDA
I have been living in the Bronx since 1989. I have one son, he’s 13 yrs old. My husband is retired from the NYPD. My Mother used to visit my sister Donna, her husband and son in Virginia.

  24. Sally Ears:
Sorry to hear about your stroke. Keep a stiff upper lip, God will take care of you and see you through this ordeal. Stay well and it was wonderful hearing from you. Hope you make the reunion.
    Laura Marsella

  25. Does anyone remember sneeking in the “diamond factory”? It was located in the 30’s on Fifth Avenue. I believe it was really some kind of company that made rhinestones but me and Annette and Arlene Durante (23rd St.) used to sneek in find all these “jewels” scattered about on the ground. I remember it looking like there were little cabins in the back. It was very strange.

  26. Barnara Spencer,

Yes I remember the diamond factory well, it was on 35th street and fifth avenue, before we lived on 23rd street, we lived on 34th street between 3 & 4th avenue, and on Saturdays when we went to the movies on 44th street and fifth, we would stop there and find all these jewels we thought were real diamonds…the things you remember….

  27. Lori Angelo:
Finally, a note from you. I moved from Bergen Beach/Mill Basin to Main Street in Tottenville off Hylan Blvd. It seems that most of the people going to the reunion are a generation or two removed. Will you be there? I’d love to see you. Can you get in touch with Michael S?

    Ralph Saurato:
I also lived at 664 6th avenue. It’s Marie’s daughter Gina. We lived downstairs from you next to my Uncle Bobby Virgilio. Didn’t you and Marie play cards with my mom? Mom always had alot of card games.

  28. Hi PINKY –
When you lived on 35th St. did you know the Antonio Family?
    They lived on 31st between 3rd & 4th (closer to 3rd).

Peter (about 62 now), Barbara (56 now) Her married name
Coppola… Other younger sibling John (died at a young age
of AIDS).. and another younger son. Mother’s name was Columbia but she was known as Chubby and her husband Pete?

PATSY, ANNIE, LOUISE & THERESA – you may remember Barbara Antonio, she was in BRHS with us (main school not annex). Also
    graduated in ’70.

    ———————-

BARBARA & PINKY – I do remember the ‘jewel’ factory, but
didn’t indulge. I also remember a factory (I think it was 18th St. slighly above 5th Ave.) They made some type of paper products.

I remember they would have left over gold, cardboard-like squares and we would get them and make greeting cards and/or use for school projects. They also had the long punch-whole cards that
were probably compatable with early ‘computers’ – they had
    all codes written on them.

  29. NILDA ACEVEDO …

While Terry may be the Mayor of this site, I am crowning you the
MATRIARCH. You seem to be a common thread among many of
the bloggers. I look forward to seeing you at the Reunion. I know
I know you, and I KNOW FOR A FACT, you did my hair too… (I have
pictures of a 10″ beehive with curls to prove it 🙂 Unfortunately,
I’m not connecting a face with the name. Either way, I did want to
reach out to you… and also say I was sorry to read about your
sister. Keep the faith, and know in your heart you will see her again. Wishing you God’s Peace!

  30. hola to all:

Christine Oliva: thanks for the compliment, i feel good too, thank God. I visited Geraldine last Saturday, we had a good time reminiscing, i hope to do it again soon.

Now that u mention “On top of Spaghetti” i remember that so well, i remember all of u dancing around the living room with me. Yes i always loved to dance and i loved music, i still love both. i remember all the birthday parties, i will try my best to search for those pictures, i have some of john. i am in the middle of feng shuing my apartment, i am tired of having “stuff” that i don’t use.

it was a pleaure doing Florries mothers hair, we shared many a good moments together. i loved your mother too, she will always be special to me, as the Olivas are.

Yes, i have noticed u talk about food mucho, in answer to “pastelles” i do not make them, toooo much work, but i understand that “goya” makes some good “Pastelles.” I have a real good Puerto Rican Cookbook, i will look up and send you the receipe. Next time you come to NY/NJ i will make sure to get some for you, Eddie gets them from someone on his job. I only eat them made out of vegetables, a little different, but i don’t eat pork.

Your children are a handsome pair. much like u and your husband. U make a good-looking family.

Geraldine: HOLA, love u dearly, thanks for listening so well. i see you are really loved by your friends, we all need friends.

Paulie O: You are crazy, but you are dear to my heart.

what is there to say about Anthony and Jamesy, that has not been said above. they are a special species.

So many names, so many experiences, such a special time to reunite.

Ralphie: We are from the same generation, so many years have passed. Anthony passed in 1976 WOW; but he is not forgotten. see u 9/21.

    Bobby Ann: Where are u?

    love and blessings to all.

  31. HI FRAN BARBARA ANTONIO DID LOOK FAMILIAR WHEN YOU WROTE THE NAME ON THE BLOG. DEFINITELY CANNOT PUT A FACE TO IT. 🙂

  32. To Pinky: So happy someone else remembers the “diamond factory.” The things we did for fun back then!

  33. RALPH SAURATO –

Not meaning to sound trite, and don’t want to ignore what I’ve read about your son Anthony…. so briefly I will say, I am sorry!
I believe I knew you/Donny at that time, but cannot remember this tragedy. From the bottom of my heart, I’m wishing you
    continued healing and peace!

    ALL:
Guess I’m running out of words to say to all – in expressing condolences. There have been so many ‘losses’ on this site.
I’m sending up prayers right now – for all who have passed
on, and for all of you and your families. God Bless!

  34. Hi Laura LaTorre Marsella – yes I do remember you! Glad to see you here. I also remember your mom and sister.

Gina Riches – great talking live with you last night. (Gina – you mentioned the Barrett’s last night & I forgot to ask you – is Tina still in Brooklyn and how are her boys?)

Marie Puglisi – if your “big” sister can blog – so can you!! Rosie Marsella – it was great seeing your name on this site. Ladies, how is your sister Jeanette?

Vinny Bonavita – welcome – but where’d you go??

Terry – hurry back – I miss you!! (Terry I think we need more than your yard – as big as it is – for this reunion – anyone know a park we can borrow???)

Whoever is coming to the reunion, please bring pictures.

So many memorie, so little time!

It’s back to work for me. Enjoy the rest of the day!

  35. Karen D:
Tina and her son John are still on 20th street in brooklyn. I will give Ronnie the website and maybe he can pass it onto them.

  36. Gina,

Yes I will be there at the reunion! I am going to have to hold my sister up when she sees all these people walking through her door!

You are on main street! What got you over the bridge? Is your mom with you? I still can see her sitting at teh window on 6th Avenue. My mom did the same thing! I am in New Dorp/Grant city. I have been here for 18 years. I have three boys, Joseph will be 14 in September, michael is 11 and Mario is 8. They drive me nuts! So you had better come to the reunion. Do you remember a Michael clemente? He was on here in the beginning. I dont’ know what happened to him.

  37. Debbie Paladino

  40. Hi All – Haven’t been on in a while, but did read ALL the messages.
I’m Donnie and Ralph Suarato’s sister and I am 69 years young. I live in Ft Lauderdale, Florida for the last 38 years except when I lived in Staten Island from 1980 to 1987.

  41. Chris:

tessie’s daughter, i almost cried when i read your message, tell marie and tessie i will be calling them after this weekend, for we (17th Street) are very busy with last minute organizing for our 4th Annual Cancer Crusade fund raiser, the American Cancer Society sponsers us. it will be held this saturday the 23rd from 11 to 7 p.m i hope some of u could come or donate for this great cause. Cancer research is never ending, u could make out the check to American Cancer Society and mail it to 17th Street Cancer Crusade, 149 17th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11215. (the reason we would like to mail it to us, is because we would like to have a record of how much $ was collected) i know i have mentioned this a few times but it’s just that we know the needs and we see the advances that research has brought forth, this cause is close to our hearts, we have lost so many to cancer.

Please give my love to Tessie and Marie, they were very dear to me. Your entire family was such a happy, fun loving family. i learned alot from hanging out with them, many many good times.

How old are u now Chris?

    talk to u soon.

i imagined dancing in the cages was Go Go dancing? that must have been a blast.

42 – 47 students in a class no wonder the nuns were soooo strick, i guess you were a good boy Anthony, ha ha ha (don’t mean to laugh)

    blessings to all

  42. Nilda, my love,
I think Wendy emailed me but I accidentaly deleted her. does her last name begin with a “D” ? If it was her, can you tell her to mail me again. or she can always call me. 516-708-1184.

  43. Theresa Golino,

I know what your Mother and Farther were known as. But there was one of your cousins, OMG, It just came to me, it was Sosia (spelling) He was a little older than Angelo, I think, and I remember he always liked how out of control I was, he seemed to get a kick out of it. I was so fond of him, the nicest guy, and I know he had great affection for my mother and she loved him..too. Is he still around ? I’m praying for Angelo to make the re-union.

  44. HI CLOTILDA!!!

I so remember you, but you were so young. How old are you now? I remember your whole family. How is your lovely Mom? I remember we used to have such fun at your house. Your mom pierced my ears with a needle and thread when I was about 12. My sister is doing very well, living in SI. Chickie still lives in Brooklyn on Bay 14th St. My uncle Al Tag passed away a few years back. He was such great fun when we were growing up! I’ve lived in Cali for over 30 years now.
