  1. Hi, Theresa P and Sarafina P were in my class. I remember visiting both at their home. But as I got older I stayed with Linda on the other side of the Street. I never knew what happened to Theresa and Sarafina. Years later the 1st floor in the Building where they lived on 21st Street, became a Spanish Church.

I don’t know if you heard about the Alumni for St. John’s School before they closed. There, it was great to see Margaret H (Dritto) and Ronnie J. Now we keep in touch via email.

They had a tour of the school and refreshments. The Auditorium was roped off because is was unsafe and the top floor was closed because the floors were soft from termites.

But I was glad to go where I could go. I was seeing in my head all the things that use to be. On the balcony I saw the nurse giving shots to children. When I looked down from Balcony I saw the girls dancing after the Sodality meeting. I remembered being on the stage in a kindergarten play. Later on in life winning at Bingo.

I took a coat hook and an old pencil sharpener. I needed a souvenier. I was sad about the Condo’s taking over. One went for over a million dollars.

The Church was in the Red, before they sold it for Condo’s, they were doing movies in there. Did you see Big Daddy? Well that was done in St. John’s.

I use to go to the 40 plus club there until I moved to NJ in 1999. It should have been called 70 plus. LOL it was a day of crafts and I liked it. I moved to 29th Street in 1977 then here in NJ 22 yrs later.

The area changed so much but the houses have sky-rocketed. I miss how it used to be. Remember the 72nd Precinct on 15th Street. & 5th Ave(now on 29th St and 4th Ave.). Sanf’s Mens store on I think 15th Street across from 72nd. Prect., Parker and Megna Drugist, The Army and Navy store, Daniels Florist on 9th Street.

Well this was fun. Till later, Santina

And Annie Scharalli lived next door to him. Funny story – my Mom met Annie when they were both in the same room in Methodist Hospital- Maternity ward. Diana and I were born in the same week in January. Poor Diana died about 11 years ago. The Manzione’s lived next door to them. Next to them were Eleanor and Joanne. 21. Some of the stores I remember on 5th were Rosa’s Beauty Parlor near 22nd, the Lourdes shop, where we bought mass cards, Rocco’s candy store, Anacreante (sp?) funeral home and Lockwood’s funeral home, Negri’s bar, Danny the buther, the St. Ann’s club, D’Amico’s, Atlas Savings Bank, Jack’s Deli bet. 21 and 20th. Margie’s Beauty Salon, the Laundramat, bread store. There was a children’s clothing store on or near 15th, Rosette’s, I think, that my Mom would get my dresses when I was a child. Later, as a teenager, I shopped in Miracle Corner.

I’m not sure, but I think there was a ice cream parlor, where you could get malted and such, on 16th and 5th ave. back in the late 50’s or early 60’s. I remember going there with my Dad. Does anyone else remember it?

Remember the RKO Prospect and the Avon? Back in the day, no one checked a timetable to see when a movie would start. Whenever you got there, you’d sit and watch the movie, even if it already started, then wait for it to begin again and leave when it came to the part where you came in. My family would do this on Sunday afternoons, then go to Loft’s Candy Shop on the way home, for a box of chocolates

  22. margaret,

oh…rosas beauty parlor. i could just see her. the lourdes shop what was the owners name i want to say mrs. mauriello i could see her also she was a heavy set lady. lockwoods still there the sons we went to school with run it now. danny the butcher my mother always shopped there. i worked in lady fair in the late 60’s and 70’s. jacks deli was next to my dads store i remember buying devil dogs and eating them on a little stoop outside his store. years later he closed the deli and he became a barber. the other jacks deli was the clean deli near d’amicos. he was such a nice guy he had two sons i think. it was a very narrow store. i remember the ice cream parlor also.lofts candy store and there was another candy store i cant remember the name. someone might have mentioned it earlier. what about years later the mens clothes store capri i think it was called on 9th street and 5th. also how about the fruit market i want to say around 18th street maybe prospect ave the boys went to st johns. there last name i think was maresca not sure. the bobs record and camera shop. i bought my first 45 in the 60’s rag doll by the four seasons. now im showing my age. terry i got to get a life im always checking this site. lol

  23. Hi All, I’ve been reading the comments and loving the memories. My sister Margaret sent this to me, Terry Angelo Sherman sent it to her. Someone mentioned Sally, don’t remember which guy it was, but if you remember Sally than you must remember my cousin, Charles Cirillo. I sent this site to my dentist George Bambara, another St. John’s graduate who lived on 21st St. near 4th Ave. I have to admit I don’t remember the bakery between 21 & 22nd Sts. but do remember a bakery next door to Totto Marino’s Dixie Tavern. How about Towbins Furniture and Frank the Butcher. I also remember shopping in Miracle Corner on 13th St. I know the Lentini twins, Anne & Louise and their sister Susan. Marie P – do you mean Jesse Lombardo (and his brothers Blaise and Bobby)?

  24. Rosa’s Beauty Parlor started out near Mike’s first Bread Store ( either above it or above next door to it. on the 2nd floor. I got my hair cut there for my sister’s wedding in Dec. 1960. Then it moved to the other side of the street on 22nd St. Did anyone ever go to the Paradise movie theatre? I saw Rodan, King Kong and all the religious movies with st. John’s there. Later on it became Paradise Lanes. Ten years ago it was Kentucky Fried Chicken.

  25. I remember Towbins furniture, bought my first living room there. Even went back and bougth my second one after canceling from Hoffman Krus.
to bad no one continued that store. My favorite memorie was the lemon ices from d’amico’s. I do remember RKO when the dave clark 5’s played there. If i’m not misstaking the movie was the three stooges before the band went on. I remember going to St Rocco’s feast and winning a bottle of wine.. How did they let me take that home?? Remember drinking it warm with a straw..did not remember the rest of the night….LOL
lived on 32nd street then..which i could go back.
My inlaws still live in the Garden Appt. on 4th avenue between 23rd and 24th Street.
    talk soon

  29. Terry, I sure remember the fruit market on 18th street. My mom always went there, and the camera store was where, I think, we all bought our records. He was such a nice guy. I went to school with Dennis Smith and Bobby Hubner, who lived over the camera store.
Towbin’s was where I bought my bedroom set when I first got married — still have it after 35 years. Husband says it’s the best set of furniture we ever purchased! One of the salesmen in there always reminded me of Ed Sullivan.

Don’t remember the Paradise and Globe theatres at all.

What ever happened to Pop’s Bazaar? Passed the old neighborhood recently and it was closed. I remember how crowded the shop was. You could never look around.

Does anyone remember the Rittenhouse family that lived on 22nd bet 3rd and 4th? They are my in-laws — married one of the brothers, Tom.

  30. Hey Terry.Yes it was in the middle the.I saw the original movie called THE THING there. Scarred the hell out of me .Also seen The Creature From The Black Lougoon at the prospect. Take Care. Michael.

  31. MARGARET,

RITTENHOUSE THAT SOUNDS SO FAMILIAR I WENT TO SCHOOL WITH THOMAS SMITH AND MY MOM WENT TO SCHOOL WITH HIS DAD WHEN THEY WERE KIDS I THINK. POPS BAZAAR I THINK IS STILL THERE. REMEMBER YOU HAD TO WALK SIDEWAYS IT WAS SO CROWDED GOD FORBID A FIRE STARTED WE WOULD ALL BE DEAD. I USED TO PLAY WITH THE DAUGHTER WHEN I WAS SMALL AND I THINK SHE WENT TO BAY RIDGE HIGH WITH ME. 33. Hi.again terry.Oh those Riengold Girls.Does anybody remember Raymond and Ronny Romensonto brothers. they lived on 21st. between 4th. and 5th.

  34. Terry,

Pop’s was such a fire trap, but we still went in — usually just for green sox to match our uniforms. I sure do remember the Jewish bakery, my family would go there after church on Sunday to buy buns. There was always a line waiting to go inside. And, yes, there was a beauty salon on the other side of 5th Ave.

    Michael,

Ronny and Raymond lived on my block. They had two sisters, Darlene and Renee. Renee was born very premature — she weighed about 2 lbs. –she made the newspapers. Don’t know what ever happened to them.

This site has really made me remember so much about our old neighborhood. It really was a great time to be a kid.

  35. It’s me again. Just a quick question, wasn’t there a fish store on 5th around 20th street? I remember going in with my Mom, she always talked to the owner. I think his name was Louie.

  36. Hey, I even remember the candy store Jacks! Yes, my borther worked there. I loved going to the back and sitting on the stools. My brother used to by my mom, two sisters and me our candy hearts there every Valentine’s Day. Did anyne mention the little grocery store next to the Pizzia place. It was inbwtween my Dad’s store, Michael’s lamps and gifts and the pizza shop. My borther worked there also. I remember the owner was a man, kind of looked like Mr. Rogers.

  37. margaret,

me again. darlene was another one of my cousins. all my dads cousins lived on 21st street. the pintos and raymond’s family were related wasn’t her name rachel not ronny. i wish my mom and dad were alive so i could ask them. tootsie and tony, aunt fina and uncle raff all related to raymond, and the pintos. they all moved to florida when we were young. i am going t learn how to put the old photos on line. i have photos of darlene, sarafina etc in florida when they first moved we went to visit them. they are also related to joey and johnny leone. their parents were giggsy and jeanie. only brooklyn people would have these names. i cant remember the fish store. terry

  38. Terry the Beauty Parlor was Bella Donna. Sorry to hear about Jimmy Catalano. I hope he recovers.

I think there was a Rittenhouse in my class, I’m not sure if her name was Paulette.

I remember Spinners. My mother used to shop there every Saturday. on Union St.?

    Do you rmember J & D on 11th St(I think 11th)?

The donut shop on Prospect and 5th? Santina

  40. Hi.Margaret.Yep. there was a fish market on 20th. and 5th.I also remember Renees premature birth. To the other Michael. I knew your cousin Bobby very well.Execpt back then we called him Archie.Great Guy. Everybody be well. Michael.

  41. How about Pop’s Bizaar on 5th Avenue/18th St (if I recall correctly). They had a lot of junk, but sometimes good finds. I still dream of Lenny’s Pizza! I lived on 22nd St between 4th & 5th Avenues – went to St. John the Evangelist grammar school, Prospect Heights High, Brooklyn College and now live in California. Rocco’s Candy Store was a hang out!

  42. michael boyle,

i remember the ice man was it the panza family? i remember a short chubby man with a cap on his head i was very young but i remember the ice truck. how are you related to judy and bobby. she is my childhood friend and we still see each other when she is up from fla. and i go down to visit. alex and teresa, i sent this site to teresa i just met her a few years ago in staten island through my friend sue ferrarra. i thought they would like this. do you remember the gils. they lived in the house on 19th street in the back. emiy was rudy’s sister. alex knows him. she is in her 50’s now. rudy and ariana were younger. rudy not that much but ariana is younger. terry

  43. We called Park Slope — SOUTH BROOKLYN back then and we were Proud of It!!!
The Malt Shop on 15th Street and 5th Avenue was called Lorenzos.
Before 1959 it had a great ice cream counter and stools and Juke Box. After 1959 they put a pizza area and booths in the back.

    Kids I remember:

21st St. – 3 & 4th Ave: Clara Castrogiovanni, Johanna Collao, The Rizzos, Angela Pazzaglia, Serina and Lena Foti, The Hendricksons – 14 of them, Louise, Katherine and Steve Misano, Maryann Pennachio, Linda Finamore, Camiell, Johnny and Bobby Marielli, Rosie Chappola, Elaine and Benny Calendreno, Sal (Jr) DeLeo

19th St 3 & 4th Ave: Chickie Arena, Bobby and Eugene Amandolla
    20th st 3 & 4th Ave: Joey, Jimmy and Jerry and (Joanie?)Oniell

We went to Sodality at St. John’s on Thurs after school – prayed and then danced for an hour.
We went to Confirmation dances at St. Roccos but never danced with the boys. The boys just stood holding up the walls while the girls danced together.

The boys would also swim off the piers below 2nd Ave. One boy dove in and never came up. He drowned and that is why St Rocco’s Youth Center was built. I never went there, but 25 years later my children went there for Movies and skating.

21st Street had Italian feasts every year, St. Roccos had one. And there was also a small chapel on 22nd St. between 3rd & 4th and they also had a feast (all this was a long time ago).

I remember one year, my sister came home from Bay Ridge High crying the “Baldies Are Coming to Wreck Our School” They were suppose to be a motorcycle chain wielding gang (purely fictional) out to get the girls.

There was an explosion on the Bull Line Docks — down on 2nd Ave somewhere between 27th and 22nd sts. It shattered the glass 20 blocks each way.

One special memory was of the whole neighborhood dancing and singing. We all brought our tables out in front of the houses and ate so that we could all br together. As small as I was, this memory stayed with me forever. I never realized why I was so happy that special day until recently when I mentione it to my family. They told me it was the day they announced the End of WWII. What a happy time!!!

Does anyone remember any of this?

    Marie

  44. I remember the explosion on the docks. I was sitting in my class at Bay Ridge H.S. and the whole building shook. And that was on about 63rd and 4th Ave. I remember the boy drowning off the pier, and my parents and neighbors used it as a warning to us about going near the piers. I remember the “baldies” — your sister must be my age!! I remember my father and uncles in their Navy uniforms and the block parties at the end of WWII and throwing me back and forth to each of them (a vague memory because I was only a baby). Does anyone remember the ice cream parlor on 9th and Pros. Pk. West? About 10 years ago I was back there from CA and saw it was a French restaurant, and last summer I went back again and saw that it was filled in and made into another apartment in the building. Marie, where do you live in Calfironia? I live near Riverside.
