Mary Ann, Sal Fucci, christened my sister Gina back in 1966. For some reason, I still rember the day when you two came to the house and Sal took photos of Gina with her yellow dog while she sat in her hi-chair. He was a lovely man. We always enjoyed your visits. Thanks for your kind words about my Mom and Dad. I miss them and my sister, Edithann, every day.
Steve K.
I knew that was you!
What a great guy – always smiling and so soft-spoken. What a wonderful family you have – 4 kids wow. What was your grad work in?
Thank goodness you’re not in Kansas anymore!
You still haven’t explained the cryptic “PAL” I feel like Tom Cruise in The DaVinci Code!
Denise,
We don’t know each other but I’m very sorry for your loss.
Hi:
This site is terrific. I don’t know that many of you. I lived on Prospect Avenue so I didn’t hang out after school or on the weekends. Graduated in ’64 with Margaret Dritto, who sent this to me but doesn’t come on. Santina please send me your email address again I’ve been trying to contact you but they keep coming back.
Hi again from Pinky’s sister carolyn,
My daughter Graceanne asked me to ask whether anyone on this site knows of or knows how to reach Stella Venterelli? She lived on 5th avenue.
They were best friends at John Jay and she would love to be in touch with her.
Thank you,
TGIF :):):)
Hi Francesca,
I’m afraid I don’t recognize your name. You’re so right about how great our parents were.
As you must know, not all, but far too many parents today overindulge their kids and don’t demand accountability from them.
Combine this with the soaring divorce and single-parent rates, and we are now looking at the demise of the family and our great country as we used to know it. It’s so very refreshing to see that many in our old neighborhood have had long intact marriages with stable children. Maybe there’s hope for us yet.
Are you a behaviorist as in counseling? While studying at Hunter in the 80’s, I worked at the front desk of a strict Freudian psychotherapy clinic on the upper west side. It was so much fun hanging out with all those shrinks, but being anti-freudian, I got into arguments all the time (friendly ones of course).
Best wishes to you.
Maria Averasano
Hi. I remember your name also. I did go to St. John’s and then to Bishop Kearney in ’68. After that my family moved to Flatbush (Ave. J & E. 15th St.) Caroline Negri (Paladino) was my aunt and was usually AWOL from home – out somewhere playing cards with her girlfriends. She would take me with her while running numbers.
Susan (Lentini)
The witches house, on 22nd street, closer to 4th, had a window with what looked like an outline of a woman’s face with a crooked nose. We didn’t know who lived there, we just made up the story to scare ourselves. We would sneak up on the house, and then run away screaming. We did that everytime we passed the house.
Hi Frank Mauriello,
I dont’ know you but I remember your name and I remember your mom working in the Lourdes Shoppe – she was so pious and kind. I loved going in there – it was always so serene, so different from the other stores on 5th ave. All the cards, prayerbooks, statues, medals, etc., gave the store a special feel – one of reverence and holiness – as if it were a consecrated place.
Although I’m no longer practicing, I am happy to have had a catholic upbringing with all its traditions, rituals and core values. That structure gave many of us a firm foundation from which to grow and thrive.
Best wishes to you and your family and enjoy retirement!
Annie (Lentini)
What a great story. I’m not surprised that Susan went with your father to pick out the Barbie cases. I remember Susan being very motherly to you and Louise, and also very protective – it was as if it were her job. Do you agree Susan?
Such affectionate memories ….. our families were amazing.

Patty- Have you spoken to Rita- It has the potential of being a great story.
Pinky, I remember you well always smiling & laughing. Mom & Dad are gone. Mom passed last summer @ 89. Penny candies drove me crazy! Nice to see you remember. Cynthia lives down the road from me. How is your brother Charlie doing?
Rosalind…..how are you? Long time since the days on 21st street. This sight is amazing. It has brought so many people back into each others lives. I see names of people I never thought I would hear or see anymore. Especially since mom died. She kept us up on the latest park slope news.
Nilda……you are so right. It is sad that we see people we haven’t seen in years at funerals. I think Terri Angelo is doing a great thing by having a reunion, I hope the weather holds up that day, she seems to be attracting more and more people. 😎 I’m still working on my aunts. I’ll let you know.

Dr. LUCILLE BALL
Finally got back to the site…..
Don’t worry about being a voyeur. There’s nothing wrong with that.
Sure there are many others… me included. I only comment when
there’s something relevant to say, or someone to respond to…
So here goes:
Yes, our parents only wanted the best for us! I’m sure in most cases they didn’t know what that was at the time. DID WE?
Most of the people I’ve met in my adult life had such different upbringings, with extremely educated parents. But they didn’t have the street smarts that are intuitive to Park Slopians.
I always felt like I had an edge in interactions, based
on my upbringing and our environment. So for me personally, while this blog is a nice virtual social substitute for the Gridiron, it is also an acknowledgement of WHY WE ARE!
CONGRATULATIONS on your PhD in Clinical Psych. Are you in private
practice? (It sounds like all from the neighborhood are successful people, and that’s great; so Congrats to all of you! A study should be done on how we all turned out.) Maybe I’ll do that someday.
As for me, no I didn’t go into ‘private practice’ (even though I’ve been on the ‘couch’ 🙂 in my day. I studied with The American University (Wash DC) i.c.w. NTL Institute for Applied Behavioral Science. Studied adult education and learning theory and organization development. Took an unconventional
approach to designing and implementing training/curricula – many T-groups, fishbowls, application, etc. which brought in the ‘psychology part’.
I just about survived 39 years in Corporate America. I am now a two-time, semi-retiree, who uses my skills to work with RAINBOWS (support group for grieving children), run a support group for divorced individuals, mentoring newly-diagnosted breast cancer women at American Cancer Society. As you know, it is much more rewarding volunteering in this field vs. corporate and/or private practice stress. I swear I still suffer from ‘post corporate traumatic stress syndrome.’ I burnt myself out beyond ‘rallying’ which I had to do too many times. Strong statement – but I hate corporate america.. Only thankful to AT&T for lifetime health benefits (that will hopefull last.)
Sorry, starting to sound like a resume (love this stuff). We’d love to hear what you are doing with your clinical psych degree, and also email me sometime if you want to talk more: [email protected]
Relevant to growning up in Park Slope – of all my friends, I was the only one who chose a career and didn’t have children (no regrets at all – I have been blessed with many wonderful pets over the years that more than fulfilled that need).
God Bless!
LORI ANGELO FIORITO
I couldn’t sleep last night and Terry kept popping into my head.
She must be freaking out. Do you think Mike tied her to the mast
yet?
I found some pictures of you – cute as a button – had on a jacket and matching hoodie. Terry and I must have been babysitting.
Glad you survived!
DONNIE, RALPHIE SURATO…
Hi to a blast from my past.. I also found pictures of the wonderful A’s Team, and the end-of-season awards’ ceremonies. Always loved a man in uniform.
It brought back great bitter-sweet memories of bringing my dad to
the games at Willowbrook, and cheering you (and upple-the-middle
Ed).. on to victory. Look forward to seeing you again. (Also found a picture of Tony Moreno – I’m sure you want that one for your collection.) Stay healthy and happy!
JANEK,
I know you wanted to hear from someone from 23rd St. Park..
Guess I am it for now. Thought you would want to know this.
Yesterday, I saw Nancy (Peter’s wife) and their beautiful daughter Nancy (she’s 39 now). Nancy remembered you and your brother
and said Peter thought highly about you also. She mentioned
how Peter would give you $$ to buy him a soda or something.
I know it was hard for you, as for all of us – when Peter was
killed in Nam – but I thought you’d feel better knowing that he
did care for you. Sometimes we lose people unexpectedly,
and never know, or have closure – on things. Nancy remembered you right away.
Again, as I said to Itcher, I do remember you and Henu – and
you were very nice, respectful young men (I recall you being
a little younger than us). Many Blessings to you all!
Anthony Oliva
I just spoke to Rita – she’s just now driving back from vacation in Cape Cod. She’ll be checking out the site soon.
Good Afternoon….
This has got to be the one of the most amazing site established – I don’t think anyone could ever have imagined when we were kids that years later technology (and Terry of course – lol) would enable us to find our childhood friends.
Thanks Terry!!!!
I have been reading through the comments and feel like a kid waking up on 5th avenue again. I can still remember waking up to the sound of the 5th ave bus and the delivery trucks, especially the newspaper truck tossing the bundles on the sidewalk!
On Saturdays…the man who used to come to sharpen knives & scissors ringing his cowbell or the dry goods man, ringing the bell, trying to make a sale – He had the best chocolate graham cookes!
What about the man from 20St who used to sell fruit/veg from the wagon pulled by a donkey?
Memories can be beautiful…
I guess I am one of the lucky ones, being one of 4 sisters, and smack in the middle, I know many of my sisters friends and my brother-in-law’s (A Rizzo).
As for me – I was always know as someone’s sister – or one of the “Castaldo” girls.
Today I am know as Mrs. T or Jimmy, George or Anthony’s mom. For some reason no knows me by my name. Oh well ! I am happy to say, I am happily married 28 years and we have 3 grown son’s.
Now for a walk down memory lane….
Who remembers Deluca’s Soda factory on 21st with all the good looking guys delivering soda? BTW – my brother-in-law was one of the delivery guys!!!! lol
What about the clothing store on 5th ave called Sn… to buy dungarees (jeans or whatever they are called now!)
Holiday discount store – I remember getting an e-z bake oven for Christmas -in fact it was the same year “Rocco” played Santa for me and my sister Joyce – Ho Ho Ho-ing in our hallway with a big sack of toys.
Nick Bonivita’s grocery store on 6th ave – he always saved Italian bread for me – my father had to have Italian bread with his dinner!
How abour Monson’s Florist – Mrs Munson was famous for our communion bouquets and corrsages for Mother’s Day!
Drobinski Pharmacy across from Rocco’s candy store – my parents bought his house years later and we started are family there.
Miracle Corner – on 13th St
Mike’s bakery – on 5th – close to 22nd st – he had brick oven’s and the best smelling lard bread
LouDon’s Beauty Parlor on 17th St or Rosa’s Beauty Parlor
Charlie Brown’s Pub
What about the Palmer sister’s on 22nd St??? Donna, Margaret and Florence.
Does anyone know how Debbie Pisculli is ?

Terry Angelo – Michelle and Lori – remember when we were Brownies and Girl Scouts – remember selling Girl Scout cookies and picking them up from your mom’s house – Boxes and boxes – walking with a shopping cart to deliver them!!!! What ever happened to the other lady (can’t remember her name) who was the co-head with your mom-she had a daughter who went to school with Terry and my sister Carol.
Oliva Family – it will be great to see you again… our families were close back then. I was very upset to learn about Jeanie. We hung out together. We kept in touch until she moved to NJ. My deepest sympathy.

Life goes by so fast I can not remember the last time I allowed myself to walk back this far…but thanks to all of you it has been fun journey. Hope to keep in touch or see you at the reunion.
Special thanks to Terry A and Theresa G.
MARIA (CASTALDO) TRABOLSE…
Hi – I remember your family. (I’m from 20th just below 5th)
I was just about to get on with my life again, and made the mistake of checking this site. I have to comment on your entry:
“Who remembers Deluca’s Soda factory on 21st with all the good looking guys delivering soda? BTW – my brother-in-law was one of the delivery guys!!!! lol”
I wrote somewhere above that DeLuca’s was one of my first jobs.
I worked upstairs doing their billing. I had to be 14 or so (we were
very industrious in those days, at an early age).
I also said that Carol Miele and I had boyfriends who were the delivery boys. Possibly your brother-in-law? We’d ride our bikes to go meet them. Think Carol’s ‘boyfriend’ was named Ralph – and mine was Gary Bursuka (something like that – not an Italian name – God forbid!) Someone ran into him years later and he opened up a club in Bay Ridge. That’s too far into my past to remember and looking back we really were just kids.
CAROL MIELE – Busy grandma, love you!
Do you remember the above and DeLuca’s Soda Factory?
Oh, and by the way – Carol and I also worked in J.P. Morrisi’s
Macaroni Store on 18th & 5th. Think that was mentioned earlier.
We were the Bobsy-Twins behind the counter, measuring the pasta
and eating all the cheese in the walk-in refrigerator.
FOR THE RECORD: I MISS TERRY ANGELO SHERMAN!
MARY ANN
Gina is doing fine. She lives in Bensonhurst. She has 4 children (3 boys 2 of them being twins and 1 girl). Let’s just say she was born in 1966, lol. How is your family doing?
LORI ANGELO FIORITO
How are you? I read some of the Blog yesterday then shot off a note. As I started reading more, and believe me, I still have more to read, I saw all the nice things people had to say about my Mother and Father. I remember your Mother would stop by my house on her way to work at Bingo to see if my Father was ready. They got along so well. I have seen names and read notes of so many people I knew when I was growing up in Brooklyn. Remember our twirling days at St. John’s? I’m sure Clotida does.
ROSALIND CASTALDO RIZZO
Of, course, I remember you and your family. It’s been such a long time. Give my regards to your sisters for me. How is your family doing? This blog brings back so many memories. I try to keep in touch as often as I can with Anne Marie Ischia Paladino. She keeps me updated and what’s going on in Park Slope. Would you believe my Mother’s sisters, Rose and Lillian are in their 80’s and still live on 21st?
HI EVERYONE, HI LOUANN TOMBASCO I KNOW YOUR READING ALL THESE ENTRIES LOL, LOUANN YOU MAY NOT RECALL THESE THINGS BECAUSE YOUR YOUNGER BUT YOUR DAD(JOEY TAMBO) AND YOUR MOM(ALICE TAMBO) WILL RECALL THESE MEMORIES
KAREN BONAVITA- i think you and my cousin louis vola where in the same class,i seen your aunt lillian on friday at the grocery store on 2oth and 6th, i told her about this site and that weve all been leaving comments, so when you talk to her she’ll probably tell you we see each other, i know she dont really leave the block but she knows me as tilly so dont worry i watch out for her and she really is so heartbroken over your mom, but she wants the tree in front of the house she said she will feel better if they let her plant it at her house (thats so cute). yes i remember twirling i loved it, i wish i still had my baton we had the pencil thin batons then they engraved our names in them, i gave mine to a little girl about 25 years ago i wish i could get it back, what is the girls name that used to teach us twirling (believe it or not i see her all the time i say hello but i dont remember her name) she lives 21 st 6th and 7th on the right side of the block.
CLOTILDA
That is so kind of you to keep an eye out for my Aunt Lil. She and my Mother were always out and about. She is so devastated. My heart breaks for her. I know she doesn’t want anything to happen to that tree. We’ve explained to her that the person who owns the new house where mine once stood, cannot remove the tree. Thanks to my Father, who worked for City Hall, he was able to have it planted in my Sister Edithann’s memory by the Parks Department. So, it is safe where it is.
We had some much fun when we twirled. I loved the competitions at the different schools. The girl who taught us twirling that I remember was named Claire. I don’t have my baton either but, I found my medals when I was cleaning out my Mother’s house after she passed. She even saved some of my costumes.
Yes your cousin Louis and I were in the same classes. We even had Sister Saint Anne as our 1st grade teacher.
Hi Carol C. I had lived in Jackson, NJ since 1999.
Hi Everyone,
It is so nice to see how many people from the neighborhood know about this site and are blogging and connecting.
My favorite memory is of 21St Street, playing jump rope, hop scotch, etc… and everyone being outside, hanging around together, everyone knew one another. Maria Castaldo was right when she said ” where are the days when the only thing we had to worry about was going outside to see your friends”.
I want to say hello to Irene (Itcher) happy to hear your doing well and your kids being well.
Hello to the Castaldos, happy to hear Flory is doing well. Joyce, I remember the mail box thing…….so funny!
Hello Patty Negri, please say hi to your sister Maryann for me, she was so very nice, and its nice to hear from you too, glad your ok.
Hi Bonavitas, Karen, my sister Chris recently had lunch with Debbie and I belive Janet Cavallo, they met in Brooklyn and had a nice time together.
My Brother Anthony, You’ve got me worried about the PTSD, St. John’s Nun thing you’ve been mentioning……..don’t worry your fine! Lucia, can you talk to him please, call my brother Jamesy.
I know everyone has been talking nice on this blog but does anyone remember GOING TO THE 21ST STREET LOT! The LOT is where the kids used to go when they weren’t getting along to duke it out……..3:00pm after school to the lot and all the kids would go to see a fight. Kiddie stuff of course, thank God, but if your were from 21St Street you would remember this. The bowery kids, we were!
I thank every one who has sent their condolences regarding Jeanne, everyone!
Denise, I am so very sorry to hear of your sons passing.
I am grateful and happy to hear how many people are doing well and so sorry for those who have seen any grief or tragedy in their lives. We all deserve to live happy, healthy lives.
My email address is [email protected] . How nice to keep in touch. I hope to make it to the reunion .
GERALDINE
First let me send you and your family my condolences. Everytime Jeanne came over to see my sister E-Ann, as she called her, they would be laughing hysterically about something. I remember she came over to my house to put on mine and my sister Donna’s makeup for Anne Marie Ischia’s wedding. That was October of 1981.
Debbie did tell me she had lunch with Christine (Twiggy) and Janet. She also kept me up to date on Jeanne.
Time may have past but I don’t think our memories ever fade. More are beginning to surface as I read this blog.
Steve K
The last time I saw or heard from Joe Kubis was early 90s He was working in the fish market for a while got himself in trouble and had to leave. He was married and living in Long Island.
Did you hear anything about Jimmy Kelly? Would like to know what happened to him.
Francesca Bruno
Hi Franie,
Wow unbelievable, Can’t express how happy I am to hear from someone from the time zone. Dont know what happened to anyone drips and drabs about Danny Lorenzo, what happened to Sally Savarese how is he doing hope he is doing good. How about my cousin Henry or Guy Spinnato or Mikie Avesano and so on. Tell Nancy I would love hear from her and learn more about her daughter. I would love for someone to email me a picture of Peter as I cant find the only one I had. I think it is somewhere in my moms house. My email address is [email protected].
I work nights so my hours are backwards. I will be checking my emails everyday to see if the picture is there.
you know what.(frustrated)(sarcastic humor)…….i know, and everyone on this blog knows, that i was the only 10 year old in the neighborhood that got a kiss from all the bottlettes. i’m not even inquiring about it anymore. lol lo llo llol …….everyone knows the truth….lol… this whole blog is jealous…..lol lol lol ….all i want is to be acknowledged and honored…lol lol then i’ll shut up about it. lol lol

Thank you for bringing up the Drobinski Pharmacy, of course you remember Mrs. Drobinski. She was a little stiff, but she was always so nice to us. What a memory. Someone always brings up something that I forgot. What a gift. Icher, brought up Ottos resturant. I totally forgot about that.
There were so many famous families growing up, and the Castaldos stand out, and your so right, who would have known we would be doing this. There are three generations on this blog.
Are you refering to my cousin Debbie Pisculli? My aunt Anna’s daughter?
Hi Patty,
looking forward to seeing Rita coming on, but before she does, we have to talk, I have to get my story straight. I’ll be emailing you soon..
