  1. Teresa, Oh my god the last time I saw you I was 10.A very long time ago.How are you? I lived at 230-21St street ,rite up the block from you.I remember your sister rosa used to hold her breath when she was little.I used to go to school with Debbie at st johns. There’s so many memories,to many.Gotta go,my husbands waiting. Will check back soon.

  2. FRANNY, FRANNY, FRANNY,

YOU GO GIRL!!!SO HAPPY FOR YOU. THE PRAYERS WORK I DONT CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS THEY WORK..EVEN IF THOSE NUNS DRILLED THEM INTO US, THEY WORK. I LOVE YA AND THINK OF YOU AS YOU KNOW ALWAYS. RALPHIE SAID TO SY HI TODAY. HE IS COMING TO THE REUNION. LOVE ALWAYS, TERRY

  3. Franny Bruno S. I’m so happy for you. I knew everything would turn out just fine. You know I’ve been there and it sometimes takes a good while to recover mentally and emotionally. I think that’s the hardest part. Actually you’re never over it mentally and that’s okay because you realize how precious life is everyday and you don’t take things for granted. ( I say that in one breath and still worry that I didn’t get to wash the floor… guess that’s the ocd in me. Some things never change ) Thanks for writing to me . I don’t think anyone really knows me on this site except for the Chairman of the Board (She’s gonna kill me.) But I wouldn’t expect anything less from her. She knows everyone. Ever try walking through a mall w/ her. She must stop at least 4 times to talk to old and new friends.
That’s my girl. But a better friend I couldn’t have. So don’t be mad
Terry. I love what Rocco Jr. just wrote above about taking 10 deep breaths.Bye Franny and really hope to see you at Terry’s on 9/21.
    lol and May God Bless.

  4. Hi Debbie – yes to all of the above.. and as you know, 5 Years is a significant milestone. One more thing, I still have all of your notes in a box with some other things that I saved from that time. We’ll toast our survival when we meet again 9/21.

Hello to Karen Dritto – glad to see you here… sending you my best. Love to the family!

Hi Marie Parella – saw you posted comments somewhere along the way. I can still see your beautiful smile… Hope you continue to share it with others! Many Blessings!

  5. Hey Terry

Is my brother giving you a hard time? It’s good to see u give it right back to him. My mom goes to St.Charles too and we live on Thayer place so close to you. My email is [email protected]. Thanks again!

Hey Anthony Mei! How are u and your family? It was always great to see you at my house. Remember the 4th of July it rained and we moved the party inside the yard and me u and my dad had so much fun just talking.

Remember the chicken market and the racoons?

  6. Hola: greetings and salutations: There is only one word for this blog and that is BEAUTY; beauty because it brings back so many beautiful memories and unites so many good friends. your names sound all too familiar and some of you i do remember.

i have been reading the blogs and have not posted because my agenda is full full full but i would like to address some:

terry: I do remember a jeanette Spinato from 18th street she was a hairdresser, Spinato was her maiden name (I believe)

Clotida: Hello to u, regards to ur mother and wish her a belated birthday.

Bobbie Ann: I was tickled pink when i saw your response. Yes I DO remember that cruise, boyyyyyyy did we ever have fun. Thank God i am well, along with my children and granddaughter, Victoria Rose. I am still on 17 street bet. 3rd and 4th ave. i am semi retired, but always busy, busy, busy. Give my dearest regards to Ralphie and Donnie. i remember your family with mucho love.

Franny: i don’t have to know u to be estatic for u, my younger sister is a cancer survivor, for over 10 years. i pray that God continue blessing you and ur family.

Debbie Bonavita: I don’t know if u remember me, but i remember your family, your grandmother, she was such a Fine Lady, your aunts i did Rosies hair for years. I also remember being in your very cozy house on 21st street. Edith will always be remembered. i hope u and ur family are well. when you speak to ur aunt please give them my regards. Ask them if they want company, i would go and visit them, for old time sake.

Christina Oliva: Hello and much luv. i called geraldine this past saturday. there was no answer i will try again this week. Your children are beautiful, and you have grown up to be such a fine and beautiful woman. Florie and Tony would be so proud of u.

Anthony Oliva: Hola keep up the good work. i remember John when he was sick, he was so strong, he rarely complained about pain. i remember the weekend before he was diagnosed, your parents had a wedding to go to, Florrie asked me to keep an eye on the bunch, especially John because he had an ear ache and she didn’t like it she had a funny feeling about it, and sure enough that week the bottom fell out and he was diagnosed, that memory always stayed with me.

Gagliardies (to all) what a great bunch of kids, i say kids becuase i am a bit older than u’all. it is sooooo good to hear that u are all doing well.

in reading the blogs, i felt the slapp antony received from the nun, and my knuckles felt the crackling all over again. that was one of my teachers favorite punishment, hitting u on your knuckles with a ruler.

well good night and sweet dreams.
    blessings to all

  7. Hi Everyone. Well I’m back to reminiscing. That’s what this site has done. All day long pieces of memories keep popping into my mind of a simplier day and time. As I stroll 5th ave. in my mind I see Pop’s Bazaar on my corner- a fire trap to say the least- but they knew where everthing was. Where else could you buy cobbler aprons and long pink underwear for ones grandmother. On the opposite corner was Hall’s drug store and above Dr. Arnold Felder, Dentist. Next was Merkles, best potato salad, Einhorns and later on the Greek Church. Across the street was the macaroni store. I believe there was a mattress store and somewhere a shoemaker w/ little booths w/ doors so you could sit and wait for your shoes to be repaired. I guess you had to sit and wait because for most people it was probably their only pair. Then there was Felix’s Restaurant- only the best Italian Restaurant around. Charlie and I spent many Friday nights there. We’d slid into a nice booth, give Connie,Chubby or that cute blonde waitress our usual order while Jerry Vale,Al Martino, Dean Martin,Frank Sinatra, etc. sang on the Juke Box. I can still hear Mala Femmina, The Summer Wind, Everybody Loves Somebody, Sorrento or Connie Frances’ Mama. I know we’ve all been to muc h finer restaurants since then but they’ll never compare to the simple, gentle charm and ambiance of our own little piece of heaven. I think I miss that place most of all. I guess that’s enough reminiscing for one night. So pleasant dreams to all. Bye.

  8. Hi my name is Janet. I grew up on 22nd street bet. 4 & 5th Ave. My family owned Cavallo Plumbing and Heating on 5th and 22nd. Went to St John’s. Loved the bazaars they used to have there. Couldn’t wait to get out of school and grab a vanilla egg cream from the candy store bet 21 & 22nd st. Loved going to the bakery for my mom to pick up a load of fresh Italian bread. By the time i got it home, half of the loaf was already eaten. Remember going to the record store on 18th and 5th to buy a 45. Remember the guys always playing stick ball. Had a lot of freedom as a child back then. Lots of good memories. After looking for many years, finally got in touch with my best friends from St. John’s – Christina O. and Debbie B. Hope all my other friends from back them are doing well.

  9. Tillie
I sure do remember all the fun we had outside the club and your store. We could be just sitting on chairs outside the club and someone would do or say something that would bring you to your knees with laughter. And this would go on for hours on end. Did not have to go anywhere and you still had a great time. No, I was not aware that Louie was having this latest health problem. When ever I get in to see my daughter I try to stop at the club. I’ll try and get to see him soon. If you see him please let him know.

    Clara
I am doing well. I am on SI for 12 or 13 yrs now with my son and his family. My son Anthony and his wife Laura have 2 boy’s, Frankie named after my dad, and of course another Anthony named after my son. Dawn is still on 21st street with my X wife Dianne. She has a daughter Ashley who is 13. Who could forget 4th of July’s spent at your house. They were the best. Yes I do remember the 4th you mentioned. Imagine that, just sitting and talking and most importantly having fun doing it. Special times weren’t they. I truly miss them. I often speak of your dad to my friends about things he would say or do to crack everyone up. Give my best to your brother and mom.

    Take care everyone.

  10. My grandfather was Michael “The Sheriff” Gagliardi. Today is his birthday and, if I’m not mistaken, he would have been 100 today. He passed away Febraury 1992. His wife Faye passed away 1 year earlier and was buried on August 5th. Just wanted to put this out there. BTW my birthday is tomorrow.

  11. Hi Franny Bruno S – you go girl – what great, great news!! I’ll tell Constance and Suzanne (fyi – Suzanne is having a 2nd baby – a boy – in early December!)

Janet Cavallo – are you LucyAnn’s cousin?? She and I were good friends growing up – we still keep touch although not as frequently (time and distance play a major role). We emailed each other last week.

Clotilda – I remember Anthony – after my dad died he would always stop by to “check up on” my mom (even when we moved her to SI). I’m sure I know you too – can’t wait to reconnect on the 21st.

Denise – sorry, can’t place you but I’m positive I know you and your sister. This growing old is for the birds! I’m in a perpetual state of “crs – can’t remember s—“!!

To the all the rest on the site – hello. Well I really need to get back to work. I’ll check back real soon. Enjoy the day everyone!

    Karen

HE HAD TWO BROTHERS I THINK, CHRIS AND ONE OLDER WHO DIED IN VIETNAM. I WOULD LOVE TO FIND HIM. HE WAS MARRIED TO ONE OF THE SMITH GIRLS, NOT PATTI IT WAS HER YOUNGER SISTER . I CANT REMEMBER HER NAME AND I WAS AT THEIR WEDDING. TERRY

  27. Marie Crispino

I am Johnny “Dogs” cousin, I will get a message to them that you send your regards. Johnny has a severe back injury, Anthony & Camille are doing well.

    Anthony Gags

  28. Terry,
I remember Pat Kilkenny quite well. We all went to his brother Frank’s funeral when he was killed in action in Vietnam.
    (RIP) Michael Fox (Great Friend)

  29. Hi Nilda,
You gave me a haircut on my wedding day, 33 years ago, this coming August 16th….
You were a close friend of my family and am happy to hear from you again after all of these years.
I am happy that your children are doing so well. I miss the neighborhood, wish I’d never moved

    Anthony G

  30. HEY ANTHONY G,
DO YOU KNOW WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO PATRICK. I JUST REMEMBERED HIS WIFE I THINK HELEN SMITH I THINK. ANYWAY I SAW HER FEW TIMES MANY YEARS AGO WITH HER KIDS FROM HER SECOND MARRIAGE. I THINK COUSIN CAROL MIELE WAS GOOD FRIENDS WITH PATTI SMITH. THEY WERE FROM 17TH ST MAYBE PROSPECT AVE. HE WAS SUCH A NICE GUY. IT IS SAD THAT YOU DONT SEE PEOPLE FOR SO LONG THAT YOU WERE SUCH GOOD FRIENDS WITH………….EXCEPT YOU DEBBIE SICIARGO….OK I MENTIONED YOUR NAME. SEE SOMEONE ON HERE BESIDES FRANNY BRUNO KNOWS YOU. CRYBABY LOVE TERRY
THAT’S WHY I LOVE THIS SITE WE ALL ARE RECONNECTING AGAIN. I AM ACTUALLY HAVING DINNER WITH MY COUSIN RALPHIE SUARTO THIS WEEK WE HAVE NOT SEEN EACH OTHER IN MAYBE 40 YEARS. WOW DID I SAY 40 IM OLD. HA HA

  31. LUCIA,

RALPHIE IS TRYING TO GET IN TOUCH WITH YOU AND DIETZIE. (SPELLING ) IF YOU HAVE AN EMAIL YOU CAN LEAVE IT ON THE SITE OR SEND IT TO ME AND I WILL GIVE IT TO HIM. [email protected].
    TERRY

  32. Nilda, yes that is the same Jannette. She use to cut hair also and still lives on 18th street.

Clotilda, Get Gina on this site! I would love for her to come to the reunion on the 21st. How is her brother and her mom?

The Riccardi Pork Store – who was related to them. I think theyopened up a store on Staten Island.

Debbie B, Wasn’t it great how everyone was like family. There were so many people and we were all so close. From Grandparents, to parents to the kids! No matter where you went, you always knew there was someone you could trust and someone watching you!

Twiggy, Come on, how many laughs did we use to have.

Anthony Paladino, Were you from 19th Street?????

Janet Cavallo, yes you are JeanMarie’s sister inlaw. Was it you or your sister that chocked on an apple when we were kids. That memory always stuck in my mind. I think you still hold it against me that we fought as kids. I rememer your mom, I can’t beleive she is gone. It stinks being an orphan. My family are right there also. Both my parents are gone and it is hard to believe it.

I hope everyone is coming to the reunion!

  33. Anthony Oliva – I sent Patty Negri this site.

I was so sorry to hear about your sister. I loved being with her, she was alot of fun. My husband, Anthony Paladino & I had “marriage classes” with Jeanne & Matty before we got married in St. John’s (1981). We had alot of laughs with both of them.

The last time I saw you was a few years ago when you visited my father in the hospital (Columbia). You’re one of the few people he remembers!

It’s great to see so many familiar names!

Rocco Gagliardi Jr – I believe we have baby pictures of you and your sister in my late mother-in-law’s photo album. My mother-in-law (Caroline Negri Paladino) loved your Mom! I think the picture was a Christmas card.

By the way, are we the only ones who STILL live in the neighborhood?

  34. Lori Angelo – Anthony Paladino is not the one from 19th Street. He was originally from 22nd (between 5th & 6th) and then he lived on top of Negri’s bar on 5th Avenue (22nd St.). His mother’s family owned the bar.

His mother, Caroline was friends with your parents. As a matter of fact, they came to our wedding and are on our wedding video.

  35. I was thinking about at least stopping by the reunion (depending on the admission) but then I got to thinking……

would it be like a Cadillac Escalade riding around with a bunch of Chevy Chevelles? an iPod Nano talking music with a Panasonic walkman? Brad Pitt hanging out with Archie Bunker? Anyone catch my drift?

    I’m just bored.

  36. LORI JEAN,
ITS TOO LATE TO CALL YOU. THERE WERE PALADINO’S FROM 19TH STREET THAT HUNG OUT WITH RUDY. DIFFERENT FAMILY I ASSUME.

    ROCCO JR,
I CATCH YOUR DRIFT AND IM GONNA BEAT YOU UP IF YOU COME TO THE REUNION. IM AN IPOD AND AN ESCALADE I MAY BE 57 BUT IM STILL 16 INSIDE AND STILL ACT LIKE IT ASK MY KIDS. LOL IM BORED TOO

    LOVE YA

  37. This is unreal! Who would have ever thought that people could reconnect again this way!

    OK Lori… I am on!!

The names and memories are deep in one’s brain!

Lori: How many times have you & I crossed paths over the years?
You were in every class with me! As I read though this (addiction) I wanted to write after your comment about sitting next to someone…..in class..No one sat to your right because you sat in the 1st row 1st seat…all the time!!! REmember the free summer lunches wtih the spiced ham!!

Clotilda: I had to say your name out loud before I realized who you were. How are you? You named every teacher that we had together except 7th grade at St John’s(remember Mr. Martini & spitballs), Mrs. Ailleo came to the rescue & 8th grade was Mrs. Pardi. I did not realize you left us after the 6th…I always remember how lucky we were to get Sister Margaret Mary AGAIN!

Gina Puglisi another classmate of mine.

What about Mr Cardello!! Planet of the Apes! Did I spell his name right? Spoke about the year 2000???? I still have the scrap book of the signitures of the stars!

Does anyone remember Joseph Fucci(?) who played the organ when we came out of school? Not if you came out the 5th ave side??

I don’t know how I am remembering all of this!

John Oliva is a memory I will never forget! God Bless him! I was also in his class.

I lived on 20th between 6th & 7th. Miss Kreye lived across the street as well as Mrs. A____next door. I can’t remember her name but she taught social studies out of the text book at her desk…very interesting!!!

I know someone reading remembers this!

I used to do reading at Mass at St. John’s. I know everyone remembers Mrs. Logomassino who played the organ!!
That chruch is the most beautiful church ever!

    Where is Michael Schralli(?).

I know someone mentioned Jeannette (hairdresser). Her ex-husband is my stepfather for over 30 years. We keep in touch with her kids who I will get on this site as well.

I live in NJ now and have 3 boys 13, 9, 7. My husband also from Brooklyn but Graves End/Bensonhurst….He thought he had the best neighborhood!!!! NOT!
My sisters are Denise & Michele. I have a wonderful home but my boys can never experience puttng their feet in the johnny pump water flowing down the block. My boys don’t even know what a johnny pump is!!

We still sit on our stoop in NJ! even though we don’t have sidewalks!

Mike the ice cream man who gave us ice cream out of the ice box back of the truck before he got his new truck with hot dogs….Remember Free ice cream on your birthday!!

I guess I can go on and on!! but I won’t!!

Terry, I will try to get to your reunion with my sisters!!
    Great JOB!!!

  38. LORI ANGELO your talking about tony paladino from 19th st he drove a white corvette real nice guy he is still on 19th st and still looks the same he used to hang out with michael tombasco he is also related to loretta she used to do ceramics in her house on 6th ave bet 22nd and 23rd st and beleive it or not her house is gone she sold it and the owner knocked it down to put co -ops up. lori i got in touch with gina’s daughter christinia but i dont know if she gave her mom the message, ill try again tomorrow.
TERRY ANGELO im getting a kick out of you and rocco, but could you imagine if his dad was here and he was writing on this site terms of service would have a ball with rocco sr lol, he would call all of us those bad words, words that we say to, but they where funny when they came from rocco, do you know how many times we came home from school and would stop in the candy store then go home hysterically crying and my mother would say what happened we would say ROCCO in the candy store was bothering us my mother would say well then why do you go there, and we went right back the next day lol. but we where not allowed to go to rocco’s before school only after because one time rocco through something like chocolate syrup all over my brother dominick’s white school shirt he had to go home and change my mother was pissed at rocco, but she was more mad at dominick she told him not to go there before school.
ANNIE LENTINI i went to your mom’s tonight after dinner about 6 p.m. i rang the bell she didnt answer so i drove along the avenue to see if i see her and her wagon lol but i didnt i wanted to give her my phone number i will try to pass there again tomorrow(wed night) about the same time goodnite all

  41. Hey Carol,
Nice to see you back, congrats on your new grandchild. I believe Twiggy came from Rocco Sr. who else would think of a nick name like that. Deetzie may have coined that too but I think it was Rocco. I’ve never seen so many Italian First names and Last names in my life.

Carol, I have to say again, it was incredible seeing you agian. I don’t think Jamesy is computor literate enough to handle a blog, besides he’s too busy going to AC all the time. Lol

Ann Marie Ischia: It’s nice to see you on the blog, and thank you for the kind words about Jeanne. I hope your Dad is doing well. I was happy to keep an eye on him at Columbia when I could. Please tell Catherine to get on the blog. She’ll die when she sees, the Lentini twins and Maria Aversano, and everyone else. I think I’m having dinner with Catherine and Thomas on Saturday with Adele and Albert. So I guess I can let them know the good news, that everyone, from at least three generations, are here sharing memories, about our beloved neighborhood.

Terry, well it looks like we finally found Patty Negri, according to Anthony Negri Paladino. She lives in Az. Let’s hope she gets on here, I’m sure she can make a contribution.

Terry: Are we cousins?? The blog is going off in so many directions.

  42. Wow, I was just checking email before leaving work, when I received an urgent message from Cousin Anne Marie telling me to check this site. Talk about a blast from the past!

Anthony Oliva –- how are you? I am very sorry to hear about Jeanne (and Matty). I remember how close all of you were. It’s been many, many years since we hung out in Bay Ridge with my sisters. What was the name of that bar where Rita worked? What are you doing on Long Island? I too live in the suburbs, but I definitely miss city life. My sister Rita is in Boston with my mom (now 88 and in a nursing home), and Marianne is still in Bay Ridge. I was in Boston over the July 4th weekend to see my mom (Muriel Negri). Her memory is fading quickly and it’s very sad to watch such a strong woman deteriorate. Anthony, be sure to fill me in on the last 30 years!

Anthony Gagliardi – now we are really going back in time. I have so many fond memories from those days spent in your house, in the basement, and on 7th avenue with the gang (we were just 14 then). I’m so sorry to hear about your son. I just can’t imagine what that loss must feel like. I hope you’re ok.
What are you doing now? I cannot believe you’re married thirty something years! I hope you are well and I look forward to hearing more about you. Please tell Michael and Margie I said hi. Margie and I were good friends and often walked to Sunset Park to go swimming.

Annie & Louise (and Susan) – This is like going back to a previous life! You two were my best friends when we were little kids – ages 8-12 or so. I have many sweet memories of those days. I remember your dad becoming quite ill later on and how determined your mom was to take care of him. It’s great to hear how independent she still is and how well all of you are doing, with grandchildren no less. I can’t wait to hear from you all.

Margaret Carrabetta – Margaret, you and I didn’t know each other well, but I immediately recognized your name and remembered how I always thought you were the prettiest girl in St. John’s – sort of like a homecoming queen, yet so shy and quiet. I hope you are happy and doing well.

As for me, I work as a special education teacher in Tucson, AZ. After being single and traveling for many years, I finally settled down and got married at age 48. I don’t have children of my own, but I have 15 students, whom I absolutely adore. They all struggle with disabilities and we work very hard together and play equally as hard. It is especially ironic that I sometimes work with kids who have serious behavioral problems, since I often got into trouble in high school myself.

Arizona is so different from Brooklyn. Last summer, for example, I was walking my Chihuahua and came upon a mountain lion about 200 ft away – luckily, we were able to retreat without him noticing us. We regularly see coyotes, bobcats, tarantulas, black widows and the like, and routinely remove rattlesnakes from the school playground. Usually the children find and report them to the school office. Another unusual thing about Arizona is that most people have guns. It freaked me out at first until I realized how responsible these folks really were. Almost all of the women I know keep guns at home and some even carry them. I recently became licensed to carry a concealed weapon and my folks back home think I’m nuts! I just want it for scaring off dangerous wildlife while hiking. In spite of our very beautiful mountains and sunsets, I hope to one day move back east, somewhere nearer to the ocean. I like to scuba dive and I miss the water. I also want to take sailing lessons one of these days.

I really enjoyed reminiscing about hilarious characters such as Rocco, Fat Danny and Frankie Johnny Barsalone. If only we could go back in time.

If anyone wishes to contact me directly, please do so at [email protected]. I look forward to hearing from you guys. Love to you all. Patty

  45. Clotilda,
Mom Vera spent the day in Middletown, NJ at my sister Louise’s home. I’ll give her a call today and let her know you passed by.
I think she will be home tonight.

    Carol Miele,
    Congratulations on the wonderful news!!!

    Patty Negri,
    I will never forget you!!!!
We always manage to bring you up in conversation.
Remember our trip to Florida? I was 18 years old. I think you were a year younger. Do you remember how we would contact each other using our window blinds……or listening to the Rolling Stones on your roof……and, at an earllier age, playing with our barbie dolls?
My sister Louise and I have wonderful memories. Your handsome looking….tall parents……such a good looking family. I will never forget your gorgeous brother…..how are your sisters? I want to go on but, need to run my business……..talk again.
    Love Annie

  47. Linda, finally! I know was was always in the first seat, but I do remember sitting next to John. I also remember sitting in front of you in the upper grades. I always wanted your handwriting! Mr. Cardello, he made us read 1984 and we were all to meet in front of St. John’s Church in June of 1984. I didn’t go, did you???? Funny! God what fun we all had. I have such great memories from then. You are so right about what our boys have missed. Times are different now. I would not give up growing up in Brooklyn for anything. And yes, it is so funny how our paths have always crossed in life. One way or another. How about the time I was in labor ready to give birth and you were waiting for the same doctor in the Operating Room! And then to find out my friend was your sister inlaw. Funny how things work out!

Patty Negri- thank God you are finally on! I was getting tired of poor Anthonly asking if anyone knew where you were!

Clotilda, yes that was the anthony I was thinking about. I remember him being very good looking.

Clotilda, get in touch with Gina (oh no, I’m beginning to sound like Anthony!)
