Hi everyone from Park Slope. There are so many people I want to talk to. First of all, which Guzzo is on this blog? I used to hang out with Vinny and my sister Geraldine was John’s age. I think the older Guzzo was Joseph (ALL GORGEOUS).
Clara, I have such great memories of us in you house on 22nd Street. Remember all the barbeques we had? How about when we used to cook an entire turkey dinner in the month of August and all the flies would attack the great food?
My brother, Anthony just told me about this.
I got to see many of you at my sister Jeanne’s funeral a few weeks ago. Our family thanks you all so much for coming to pay your respects.
Looking forward to hearing from you
Theresa Gallo,
This site is incredible!!
How are you feeling?
Hello to Vinny and the girls.
I’m at work. Too busy. Need to close.
Luv Annie
Hey Deb,
Thanks for asking about Bruno.
He will be home from Italy August 3rd.
I spoke to him earlier. Today he is feeling a litttle unsettled!
Too many cousins and visitors. Also, he is thinking about the packing!!! Many gifts, etc. to bring back. He needed to rest and mentioned the closed window in the room. Happy it was closed…..possibly thinking about jumping out…..said he was only kidding…..now I know he can’t wait to be home!!
Hello to Charlie, the girls and Charlie Jr. & fam.
Luv ya.

Rocco, Jr. and Terry – WOW. I have so many fond memories of living in your house. We sure had a blast!
My brother, Paul lives in Middletown, NJ and he is 41 years old. I’m 45 and live in Florida with my two children ages 7 and 3.
Rocco, my niece Jessica Gaeta just told me you reached out to her on Face Book yesterday. She asked is I knew a “Rocco Gagliardi”. I nearly passed out! You look great! I was there for 5 weeks to be with my sister Jeanne (52) who just passed away a few weeks ago on July 17th. She had a rare form of Cancer (Peritoneal Mesothelioma). May people on this site were there and it was just amazing to see all of them. Geraldine lives on the same block in Middletown as Jeanne did. Jeanne’s girls are 20 and 23 years old.
You, clara and terry can email me at ([email protected]).
Take care
Terry Angelo – I’m so sorry I did not get to see you at Jeanne’s wake. Anthony told me you were there. How is Lori.
I just sent this link to a few other friends in Brooklyn. I am now in touch with Debbie Bonavita from 21st Street. In Apil, we met and went to the old neighborhood. Unbelievable!
All my love to you and thanks again for coming to pay your respects to my beautiful sister, Jeanne.
Hey, does anyone remember the song Frankie Bassalone used to sing in the neighborhood with his scarf around his neck and a fidora? I do:
“Bring me sunshine,
don’t bring me rain.
Bring me happiness,
I come from Spain”.
Remember, Bobby Cough Medicine anyone?
Hi Anthonly,
Did your family hide you in the bathroom when I would come to your house! Only kidding. I don’t know why I can’t remember you. I know Jamsey well and your sisters and of course John. He use to see to the right of me in class. We were young and as I said my memory is not good, but I do remember him and can still see him sitting next to me! He was always very quiet. I also remember going trick or traeting with my mom and going to your house and John would be there and you know how kids are, we would just look at eachother and not say anything and then in school we would talk.
I haad some good times with all your sisters. Christina (Twiggy) and I use to hang out. I have not seen them in years. I did not know she moved to FL. What the heck made her move down there? Please tell her I said hi!
Hi Lori,
It’s me (Twiggy). I was just telling Geraldine about this site and she is going to join in.
I moved to Florida because it was a great opportunity for my husband. It’s really beautiful here. Are you still in Staten Island? Ger remembered when we used to ride the train together into Manhattan. How old are your children? Did you hear about my sister Jeanne? We’re so sad and mostly shocked. Can’t wait to hear back from you.
Saraphine Pinto
Your cousin wrote a song candy store caruso my dad was Rocco he passed away in 1994.
My mom and I would love to have a copy of this song, as it is a true legacy my dad left.
Thanks so much if you could send it.
Lucia
So good to hear from you I really do have great memories of the two of u! Would love to see you again!
Have to go now but will email soon
Lori- There she is (Twiggy) is on the Blog…If you saw her house and her two beautiful kids you would know why she moved there. and Her Husband is a great guy- I even like him..lol Hi Christina- Love you..
Terry — where is the reunion going to be?
hi Terry,
My brother Angelo is fine I will say hi thanks for asking. I guess
it took this site to become computer friendly. Hi Annie,LOUISE& sUSAN I am feeling great espesially since you told me about thisd site.Hi to my cousin Anthony Oliva how are jeannies girls doing? Does anybody remember Alberts Hair Fair? I worked there for awhile way back . What happened to Joey Volpe he use to hang out there alot.
My boss just left so I’m safe!!!! This site is tooo much! I keep looking for King Kong to go by outside my office!!!
I’m actually smelling the block after the street sweeper went by…..how my uncle used to wash the stoop, sweep the street and wash the sidewalk….how we used to sit on paper bags or cushions on the stoop so we wouldn’t catch a cold (how that was possible, I don’t know)…we were on a first name basis with the mailman and the ice cream man and the guy that ran King Kong (I think his name was Joe) used to say he was gonna give out his mother-in-law’s underwear with holes in them! I remember doing the Mexican Hat Dance for and old Spanish lady who lived next door to Mary & Jimmy Ciccarra (she was ALWAYS on her stoop).
Did Annie Shiralli have a son named Nicky? Because I remember when a guy came back from Vietnam and everybody came running up the block hysterical crying to greet him. I could still see his face.
Hopefully my memory will always be this good.
Clotilda – I spoke to my mother and she sends her best regards to your Mom – tell her Mary DelPezzo sends her love. My Mom went to school with your uncles (Joey and Johnny).
HI LORI nice hearing from you , your sis said you have three boys, thats great, your sister terry is so funny i like her stories,i know you have 2 sisters but i could remember going to your house and i only seen one of your sisters there very pretty and she was an artist she painted is that your sister terry, remember when your mom watched margreat castagna.
DIANEA A king kong ride his name was bill lol im peeing myself when you said hes gonna give his mother in laws underware with holes i remember that so well ,as you where getting off the ride if you took an extra toy he took it back. my mom is trying to get used to this site i showed her how to write and i think she’s gonna.
TERESA GOLINO it was when you said you worked in albertos hair fair i know you my brother dominick costa used to go to school with your sister rosa, is that her name i think and i think are you guys related to the ventriglia’s.
SOMEBODY asked about cowboy, the cowboy i knew was an older man he hung out in damico’s
DIANE A the lady on the stoop are you talking about jesse’s wife agapita
HI PAT GAGS – connie and rosie called me last week ,connie told me helen that used to live next door to me died she was 86, how is everybody, nice to see you here, where is your sister claire she has to come on here
Brian,
Well, I guessed right — it was you! How the h-ll are you? The last time I saw you was graduation day 1967!! I often wondered what happened to you? For that matter, I’ve often wondered what happened to most of the kids in our class. After graduation, I never “bumped” into anyone again. You’d think since we all lived within a 10 block radius, we would have seen each other again.
You said you married a Kearney girl — does she know me? You know we graduated in ’71.
The more I thought about the sisters in the class, I think I do remember them. So you were right!
Our teachers were:
Kdg. – Sr. Ruth Elizabeth
1st – Sr. Charlotte Maria/ Miss Graffeo
2nd – Sr. Philip Neri
3rd – Sr. Helen Monica – you remember more about that class than I do.
4th – Mrs. Garcia – my favorite teacher
5th – Sr. Thomas Aquinas
6th – Sr. St. Williams
7th – Sr. Jeanne de Lourdes
8th – Sr. Maureen de Lourdes
I can’t explain to you how I remember these things, I just do. My daughter is like a “rain man”, she remembers everything she’s ever experienced. Weird.
Donna and I spoke the other day about your shouting match with her. The only thing we could think it was about was the Monkees. Were we right? And she wonders what she said to you.
If you want to catch up some more, here’s my email address:
[email protected]
Hope to hear from you again.
Anthony G.
Wow, how are you? As I said to Brian, after we graduated, everyone seemed to disappear. I only kept in touch with Donna P. She and I went to Kearney together and stayed close ever since.
Great to finally get in touch.
Talk to you soon.
Margaret
Teresa G.
Do you remember me? I lived across the street from you. I remember when you and your sister had the beauty shop on Bay Parkway.
Say hi to Angelo for me.
Nilda, the game we used to play with the rubber bands was called chinese rope.does anyone remember the hot dog man that used to walk around with his cart. I loved those onions in the red sauce..
clara, I will talk to my cousin Bo, and see if he has any copies of the song. He still sings . he does 50’s & 60’s music.
when he sings candystore caruso,he always tells the crowd about how we all hung out at the store and it brings him good memories.
I remember when they had the ship explosion and all the glass fronts broke ,and all the mothers were taking the kids up to rocco’s for icecream to calm us down.
Marie Panetta Rumola,
I’m your husband’s cousin. I met you at his wake a few years ago. Hope all is going well with you.
Isn’t this site great! I stumbled across it by accident and I’m so glad I did. Everyone had been reconnecting with old friends.
Take care.
Anthony Oliva –
Thanks for the compliments. LOVE YA BROTHER ! Miss you already.
Lori-
It all depends on the year. I was a bit of a wanderer- I would leave home, and do my own thing so that’s why you didn’t see me.. What year are we talking aobut…?
Oh boy, I guess in the early 70’s. Very funny! I am sure you hung out in the neighborhood. When I was older and started working in the city I use to take the train with your sisters. Oh I can still hear jeannie and Geraldine’s voices. Geraldine always made me laugh. I think of your family and it puts a smile on my face. I hope you all come to the reunion on the 25th. Let me see…how many days is that so I can lose some weight!
DEAR SISTER LORI,

Saraphine Pinto
Thanks so much it would be great if we could get a copy of it.
TWIGGY! (Christina O.) How are you? I can picture you right now doing cartwheels in my yard in your bathing suit! Glad to hear you are doing well and about your family. We always had so much fun on 22nd street the summers were the best, I will always remember those days fondly!
So sorry about your sister we just found out. Jeanne was a wonderful person! I remember how important it always was for her to keep the family together. Her and my dad together were so funny remember how they would tease each other?
Do you remember how you used to babysit for us and you would always let my brother and my cousin John watch scary movies on WHT?
I remember one night I was too scared to watch Halloween but my bedroom was right next to the living room so I heard the whole thing anyway! I was awake all night! LOL
Talk to you soon
Lori and Terry, ok great the reunion is on the 21st of September and at Terry’s house on Staten Island, or as Rocco Sr. would say on “Gilligans Island. “.
Clara I’m sure you remember me- I used to hang out with your dad and listen to him for hours. The best of times was going to the candy store early like 5:30 am when noone else was there and drinking pitchers of beer at Farrell’s Pub. During the week.
Your Dad was a one in a million. He had a good heart too.
Hello to Christina Oliva-Hagen and to the Gagliardi “Children” – It is wonderful to see how well you all grew up; and that you are
blessed with families of your own.
You may know me as Franny Bruno (I was an Eskew at one point too), and I lived on 20th St Between 4th & 5th Ave. – the first house down from the laundramat on 5th Ave. My house faced the loading area for Tobin’s Furniture.
I visited your homes, mostly with Carol Miele, and I’m sure we baby-sat for one or two of you along the way (maybe it was you Clara :)). I also remember ‘big’ Nancy Savarese playing cards at one of the Gagliardi’s on weekend nights.
Anyway, whether you remember me or not… I just want to reinforce that you both (Oliva’s and Gagliardi’s) come from wonderful families. And I’m sure they’re looking down on you very proudly.
Hello Theresa Golino! I remember you from the hood, Bay Ridge,
the Gridiron. (Who on this blog hasn’t been to the Gridiron).
Hi Lori Angelo… Look forward to seeingy you in September.
ALL –
Does anyone remember the carpet/linolium store that was on 5th Ave., (think between 20th and 19th St., on the Toto Marino-side of the street). They had a delivery guy, I think his name was Jimmy.
He walked through the streets carrying large, rolled carpeting on his shoulder, and I don’t think he had a neck. Haven’t see anyone mention this store.
And yes to whoever mentioned Germanes’ doll cloths, and how we got to pick them out of a very big bin. I remember bringing my doll carriage to Germanes (and we left it outside with real baby carriages, as someone mentioned in an earlier entry). It was such a special treat and I still have a vivid recollection of some of those doll dresses, 50++ years later. One day after getting a new outfit for my doll, I remember walking with my mom and Aunt Mary, pushing my stagecoach carriage, all the way to 3rd St. Park. It seemed like it was so far.
FRANNY,
YOU ARE RIGHT. HOW WE WERE ABLE TO LEAVE BABY CARRAIGES AND DOLL CARRIAGES OUTSIDE. THEY WOULD ALWAYS BE LINED UP OUT SIDE GERMAINES. I LOVED THAT STORE. I THINK I WROTE THIS BUT I CANT REMEMBER. I WENT TO DANCING SCHOOL ON 9TH STREET AS A CHILD. IT WAS UPSTAIRS. MY SISTER MICHELE WAS A BABY. SHE WAS SLEEPING AND MY MOM LEFT HER IN THE CARRIAGE DOWNSTAIRS IN TE HALL. THOSE DAYS YOU LEFT YOUR BABY IN THE CARRIAGE FOR THE FRESH AIR. TRAUMA…….I WAS SMALL MAYBE 4. WE CAME DOWN AND THERE WAS BABY MICHELE ON THE FLOOR AND THE CARRIAGE GONE. TODAY THEY WOULD HAVE TAKEN BOTH. WE HAD TO CALL MY DAD TO COME AND PICK US UP. I REMEMBER MY DAD RIDING AROUND ALL NIGHT LOOKING FOR THE CARRIAGE AND HE FOUND IT.
LOVE TERRY
I THINK WE SHOULD ALL INVEST SOME MONEY AND MAKE A MOVIE. ALL OUR STORIES REALLY SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD OLD MOVIE. MY FRIEND DEBBIE SICIARGO READS THIS SITE BUT NEVER GETS HER A– ON. ANYWAY SHE SAID SHE WAS HISTERICAL LAUGHING WHEN SHE WAS READING MICKEY’S NOTES WAY ABOVE NOW. ABOUT THE NUNS, THE NAMES AND MONICA, MONICA. HE COULD BE THE COMEDIAN PART OF THIS MOVIE. TERRY
Good morning all….
Clotilda – the Spanish lady lived next door to Sonny and Anne -they had a son we used to call Big Anthony (I think he used to hang out with Frankie and Dominick). Jesse is the man who bought my grandmother’s house – I didn’t know him. I hope your Mom does get on this site. We’re trying to get my Mom to a computer so she can connect. Unfortunately, everyone that she asks about has passed away. I saw Gina Aversano and Michele Sanchez over twenty years ago at Angie Arancio’s wedding in Toronto, Canada. They looked exactly the same. Remember Michele’ brother Danny? God he was sooo cute!
Danny Sanchez was in my class at JH10. I always thought he was very cute. One day he told me I looked ‘good.’ Little did he know it was the first day I ever wore face-makeup. Do you remember the thick panstick that we pushed up in a tube? I still have some, it works wonders for the circles under the eyes 🙂
ANNIE –
I just got Luisa’s “baby bump” pictures…..OMG, our little Luisa – I feel like you were just pregnant with her! Glad to know she’s feeling and looking great. God Bless both our girls and, of course, you and Bruno. I spoke to Louise yesterday – when you speak to her she’ll fill you in my latest “story”. LOVING reading all the neighborhood stuff – what an absolutely magical time (although we probably didn’t realize it then). You and your sisters were such a huge part of it (but I’m sure you know that already).
SUSAN – I didn’t get fired….yet….LOL – actually my boss is quite “amused” with the stories but what the f—– does he know – he grew up in Matawan!!!
SUSAN –
Please relay my best birthday wishes to Jess – I’m late with my August cards…..
I’ve been reading about the all too familiar places mentioned by some people and i don’t think a few that I remember have been mentioned. Does anyone remember the Chinese restaurant on the corner of 9th.and 5th? It was upstairs on the second floor. We used to be pay $2.75 for a full course dinner from soup to Lobster cantonese. And how about “Happiness” the furniture store on 19th. and 5th.where you could pay for things a few dollars a week. Jack’s deli store near 20th. and 5th. We used to get butter right from the big tubs and the best Rye bread. The chinese hand laundry just up from ToTTo’ s Dixie Tavern on 20th. street.
My husband and I grew up together,me from 21st. between 4th. and 5th. Tommy from 20th. between 6th. and 7th.and since we live in Florida 53years, we still call ourselves New Yorkers and especipally from Park Slope !!!
MARIE PANETTA RUMOLA,
IS PHIL YOUR BROTHER-IN-LAW? THAT WAS MY FRIEND DEBBIE BRODBECK SICIARGO’S OLD BOYFRIEND FROM 11TH STREET. I WISH SHE WOULD GET ON HERE. SHE READS EVERYTHING. I HOPE I GOT THIS STRAIGHT. LARRY AND PHIL WERE BROTHERS. I THINK SHE SAID IT WAS PHIL HER OLD BOYFRIEND. SHE EVEN HAD AN ANKLE BRACELET FROM HIM.. H DEB AM I SUPPOSE TO SAY THAT? ANYWAY SHE HAS FOND MEMORIES OF THAT FAMILY. TERRY
IM NOT ONLY WRITING FOR ME BUT OTHERS. LOL
Anthony O.

T O THE OLIVA FAMILY – i to am sorry to hear about genie, she really was a great person, i was really sorry to hear when she was moving we used to have alot of fun with her in frank(the son) the butchers, my husband worked with frank for a short while so i would go there to see my husband and frank who is my cousin through marriage on my mothers side he would bust her chops and she would say” im leaving frank im going home just have my meat ready” he would tell her no dont go wait for the meat hang out where having some laughs and she would stay a little longer.then maria castaldo would come in then more fun.nice seeing you hear
I was given this site by my Aunt (Frank Mauriello’s sister Bernadette) her husband Anthony is my Mom’s brother. I know so many of you on this site and I am sitting here with tears streaming down my face remembering the good old times.
Terry.. Lori: it’s me Linda’s sister (the Freeman girls from 20th Street between 6th & 7th Ave.) How are you guys?
Festina: Is that really YOU!! remember me I dated your brother Vinny?
Connie/Chubby from Felix’s are my best memories, my Dad took us their every Friday night for pizza and remember the great jukebox.
I cannot even begin to tell you how great this site is and I remember everything from that time.
The 3 Star bar — the owner, Blacky and Phil they were my grandfathers best friends and my Mom is still best friends with Phil’s daughter Phyliss.. Marie Aversano.. I think you know my Mom – Marie (Manno) Freeman?
Keep this going it’s wonderful to hear from all of you.
Hi Frank!!! Thanks for passing this on to Aunt Bern.
All of the names are so familiar, but with so much time between “then and now”, a bit difficult putting faces on the names. Perhaps a photo sharing website should be started where we can post and share photos.
I would be happy to nominate Terry Angelo to set this up.
BTW, Terry, I spoke with my brother Michael earlier today and he has started looking at this sight with total amazement, siad he will post soon.
Do you remember the dance parties in my basement?? The lights convienently going off in the middle of a slow song.
Louise and Annie: Thank you for your kind words, losing my son has been devastating.
DENISE,
LORI WAS GOING TO TRY TO GET IN TOUCH WITH LINDA. HER FRIEND ANGELA I THINK IS LINDA’S HUSBANDS SISTER. GOT THAT!!!
FELIXES….EVERYTiME I HEAR SUMMER WIND I THINK OF CONNIE AND CHUBBY AND MARIE THAT ALWAYS SCREWED THE ORDERS UP. MARIE WOULD COME TO MY TABLE AND SAY JUST EAT THIS I MADE A MISTAKE HE WILL KILL ME IF I BRING IT BACK TO THE KITCHEN. (HE MEANING THE OWNER)
I STILL REMEMBER YOUR GRANDPA AND GRANDMA. MY MOM WAS VERY CLOSE TO GRANDPA JOE MANNO THEY KNEW EACH OTHER SINCE SHE WAS ALITTLE GIRL.
ANTHONY,
I REMEMBER SO WELL THE PARTIES IN YOUR BASEMENT AND I THINK THE GIRLS USED TO SIT ON THE STAIRS AND WATCH US. AT THAT TIME YOUR SISTERS SEEMED SO YOUNG NOW ….WHAT THE HELL WE ARE ALL THE SAME AGE. I ALWAYS THINK AND PRAY FOR YOUR SON. I DID NOT KNOW HIM BUT I DID COME TO THE WAKE YEARS AGO. MY SON WENT TO FARRELL H.S. AND FOR SOME REASON I ASSOCIATE HIM WITH THAT SCHOOL AND THINK OF HIM OFTEN. SO TO LET YOU KNOW PEOPLE DO NOT FORGET. I THINK OF HIM ALOT DUE TO ALL THE BOYS THAT LOST THEIR LIVES WHEN MY SON WENT TO FARRELL. IT WAS AVERY BAD YEAR A FEW YEARS AGO. HE LOST 3 BOYS AND FRIENDS THAT WENT TO FARELL ALL IN THE SAME YEAR. ROBBY BREEN AND LENNY IGNAZIO AND JOEY CARUSO.
ANYWAY I HOPE THE GAGLIARDI’S AND THE BIRDS COME TO THE REUNION ON THE 21ST. THOSE WERE FUN TIMES IN THE BASEMENT WE WERE SO INNOCENT. AS I WROTE TO TERRY ANN YOUR MOM AND DAD WERE SO GREAT. JEANETTE SAVED MANY BOUNCED CHECKS FOR ME. LOL LOVE TERRY ANN ANGELO HA HA TERRY ANN GAGLIARDI
I just remembered a name from back then..Georgette, I think she lived on 20th st
Terry… I will always remember the Friday and Saturday nights Poppy would come home from the bingo hall at St. Johns (with the left over hot dogs) and talk about the evening he had working the kitchen with your Mother and Philomena. Yes your sister’s friend Angela is my sister sister-in-law.. only someone from the old neigborhood would follow that. totally forgot about Marie at Felix’s — crazy memories you have as a kid, I always remember her toes coming through her stockings of her panty hose. Crazy!! Anyone remember Teddy’s on 6th Ave.. now that was a great selection of penny candy. Also.. remember the peddler?? could never understand what that guy was saying. Someone mentioned Mike the ice cream man. My grandmother would curse him everyday. “That SOB comes right before dinner to get the kids all crazy”. I am digging for my St John’s photo book and my John Jay one as well — I graduated in 1982…. (from John Jay).
What about the macaroni store??
Good times…
Denise,
Carol Miele Vallaro (usually on this Site) – and I worked in the JP Morisi Macaroni St on 5th Ave./18th St. for sometime when we were youngsters. Friday after school and all day Saturday. We always got a free lunch of anything in the store.
Someone in an earlier entry mentioned DeLuca Soda on 4th Ave.
I worked there too, doing billing. Someone there named Gary was
my first boyfriend (probably at 15) – and I think he went on to own
some fancy ‘disco’ in Bay Ridge. Carol, when you join us again – remember – think his friend Ralphie was your boyfriend. You always
got me involved… Smile, I love you!
All, have a nice weekend!
