Does anyone know what happened to the Letizia’s from 22nd Street who I believe lived next door to Flossie. I went to St. John’s with Judy who had a sister Maria and another sister, whose name I can’t remember. I know Lena passed away and their father Phil was a Pharmacist – they were a really nice family.
TO PINKY:
I’m on the phone right now from Florida to my brother Ralph in Staten Island and he says “hello”. He hasn’t got his computer hooked up right now.
I remember Joanne and Eleanor Mondone from 22nd St. Saw Joanne at a reunion about 3 years ago. Told her that her mother was a godsend to me back when I had a back injury (bedridden
for three months) at my mother’s house – she used to come every day to wash me and change me – I know she made it to heaven.
I used to be Albert Taglinetti’s dance partner (cha-cha) They used to make circles around us in Prospect Hall when we danced.
Good talking to you.
i would like to start today by wishing my mom boobsie happy birthday!
DEBBIE A i do remember the veterans post 222 22nd st as amatter of fact an aunt of mine had given me a picture she had for years 22nd st had a street cleaning day we took a picture in front of the veterans post we had brooms and shovels in our hands all of my brothers in the pic some of the arancios michele sanchez joey drezek dwight charlie sanchez my cousin michaeal and louie vola baby paul gina aversano i cant remember who else. im sorry to hear about the arancios mom i use to see there dad steve alot before he sold the house and moved, because my husband and i used to own a store on 5th ave near 22nd st right next door to frank the butchers but that was about 13 years ago.as i wrote yesterday josephine venturelli has passed away,i see denise cresi sometimes she looks great she is still crazy and funny she stops down at the saint annas club. for some reason i cant place who you are but my mother said she does.do you remember the three or four shack houses next to the club going up the block. annie shiralli saved my brother frankies life there one day there was an old dirty man that lived in there they called him pops and of course as kids we made fun of him and bothered him well one day he got fed up grabbed my brother frankie started beating himand annie happened to be coming down the block and stopped him from really hurting frankie then years later ,the pacalano’s moved in there john and eddie now those buildings are gone.

HI ROCCO its tilly ,how are you and the family
HI NILDA we see each other in the neighborhood, i think the last time when you use to drop max off on 22nd st and you would stop to say hi while we where sitting outside with sonny gags and jeanette and the gucciones when you would leave sonny gags would say”boy that nilda she is such a good person she came along way and she did a great job with her children” thats what he would say. nilda i dont remember if you ever did my hair, but i do remember a lady named evette had done my hair, for communion my hair was up to the ceiling and i am only about 3ft a the time lol
how about a moment of silence for Fat Danny — he used to walk around the neighborhood making spaceship sounds – woop woop woop woop !!!!!!!!!
God – I keep remembering people and faces……
Clotilda – do you remember Monica, Bobbi and Teddy? Their mother Marie used to call them from the top floor window a thousand times a day!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BOOPSIE – So glad you remember me – because I certainly remember you! You never passed our stoop without saying “Hi Girls”!
Clotilda –
I went to St. John’s with Annie Shiralli’s daughter Rosaria. Remember Eleanor and her daughter Joanne?
I do remember the shack houses …..actually my grandmother called them “a casi pulack” (the Polack houses). I think there was one Polish lady who lived in them! I remember a family who lived in there – they were very, very poor. Winifred was one of the girls – we used to call them “The Winnies” – I remember my cousin Vera giving them clothes and old bedspreads. There was another family that lived there…the Passalangua’s (Patty, Linda and John). John used to play with my brother John. Was Pop’s a big, tall old man?
For anyone who remembers a guy named Izzy — he was the friendliest kleptomaniac I ever met – he was very good-hearted in that he always took my mother food shopping but upon unpacking the trunk he would help himself to some of the groceries — I know once he went to the club and offered my father, out of the goodness of his heart, some items that my mother just paid for.
Once he was parked in front of my house and his driver side door was open. I took notice of a baseball bat on the side of the seat – I grabbed it and saw my initials enscribed on the bat handle (it was my favorite Little League bat that I had “lost”) — when I mentioned to Izzy the possibility that it was my bat he uttered something along the lines of “gimme that bat or I’ll crack it over your head” — he was only joking of course (I think), but nonetheless he still did take the bat back to his car.
Izzy really was a great guy. This is just some funny stuff I remember.
I have a question about a Mrs. Maresca that taught at St. John’s school. I had her in 3rd grade (about 1978). My father once told me that she taught him as well. I estimated that would have been around 1942. Can anyone confirm that she was at the school for that long?
Marie Aversano Eskew and Mom,
Marie !! what a pleasant surprise to hear from you !! How great is this site to put people together after 50 or more years. Did we ever imagine we would be at this wonderful point in our lives and remember our happy growing up years ? There were so many good times we had , for instance, do you remember when we went to see Frank Sinatra in person at the Paramount theater and we were not going to act like so many other bobby sockers and swoon? Well if you remember that, all we saw was the tip of his foot comming on stage and we started screaming and almost fell from the side balcony box.And do you remember when we went to Philadelphia on the train to see Tommy when he was in the Navy ? He gave us apple pie on a slice of bread because he didn’t have any plates.I could go on but maybe after I hear from you again.
So you’re a GREAT grandmother,Wow !! We have four grandchildren, Stephanie our daughter has Michael, he’s a lawyer practicing in Atlanta, and Melissa graduated from colledge this past May wants to be a doctor so she still has plenty of schooling before she can apply to medical school.
Tommy our son has Samantha 18 and T.J.20. Lives in Texas and Samantha just graduated high school and also wants to be in the medical field. T.J. still doesn’t know what he wants in life, but thank God they’re all doing well.
Tommy and I are still going strong, but like you and Frankie have some aches and pains. And as for the computer thing, I get along but am still a computer nerd !! When I get in trouble I call for Stephanie to help me out.
Marie, please keep in touch and we send our love and affection to you and Frankie.
Hope to hear form you soon,
Much Love,
Gloria
DIANE A yes i remember monica and teddy whaley the moved to new mexico and they had cousins up the block the swansons wow where going back i remember one time monica whaley stuffed her bra with toilet paper and her brother teddy pulled out all the toilet paper from her in front of all of us kids lol. yes pop was a big tall dirty man lol. and if you went to school with rosaria then you also went with my cousin marie petrosino she lived at 210 22nd also then they moved to dyker heights she was good friends with mary mendola . elanor and joanne ,joanne is my godmother, and may she rip but eleanor used to get me in so much trouble when john the mailman use to deleiver mail we use to ride on the mail cart and she told my mother i was bothering him i got my assed kicked by my mother ,but after a few of those my mother realized that eleanor had nothing to do with herself do you remember how she used to pick on her own grandson baby paul o my god it was very annoying and eleanor was my brother anthonys godmother. now i can look back and laugh ,one time me and robert cacamo where playing dice for money my mother caught us and brought the money to the church for donation,i dont even know how to play dice lol
ROCCO speaking of izzy do you think my brother learned anything from hanging out with izzy lol—- TILLY
ROCCO- im talking about anthony lol
Rocco, OMG Izzy, I forgot about him, He helped himself to the silverware at my engagement party, too funny. And Fat Danny from 21 Street and the noises he made, he used to scare me to death, lol. This site is addicting, when I get fired from my job, I am blaming all of you wonderful people for keeping me from my work.
Clara, The 4th of July parties were the best, I have a few scars on my legs from the fireworks your dad used to throw in the garbage can and blow up all the time. Then he would hose the street for hours and hours, god I still miss him so much.
I have missed the neighborhood so much, it is so nice that so many people have these wonderful memories also. Have a great day everyone, must get some work done 🙂
Hi Rocco Gagliardi Jr.
I’m Annie Lentini(one of the twins) We lived on 22nd street between 4&5th and then moved to 22nd bet 5&6th Ave.
I know your family very well. They are wonderful.
I was in Mrs. Maresca’s class. I believe around 1960. It’s very possible she was at the school in the 40’s. Her outfits always matched!!!! If the color for the day was green, everything was green……..hat, shoes, pocketbook, dress, etc.
I also remember an incident in her class during our morning prayers.
My twin sister Louise fainted. We were not permitted to react!
She remained on the floor with her uniform dress raised in an inappropriate manner, and all I worried about was that the boys would be able to look at my sisters thighs!!!!!!!!! Catholic school
wasn’t easy at times.
Your father was a great guy. Everyone knows that!!!
Anthony Gagliardi – OMG – How are you. On a few occasions, I’ve run into your sister Claire. I felt terrible when she told me about your son. I can’t imagine anyone losing their child. God Bless you and your family.
Diane A.
You have a such a memory!!! I’m so jealous! Wait till menopause! Ha Ha
Clotilda,
Thank you for being so nice to our mom Vera.
Your mom was fantastic. I loved her. I always admired the way she took care of her children. I enjoyed being around her company.
A wonderful personality!
Anyone remember a guy named Joey Volpe? I don’t remember too much about him but he looked like a really cool ’70’s dude. Alot of brown clothes and a mustache.
To Everyone,
I want to make it very clear!
My entry about Mrs. Maresca and the morning prayers…….
Mrs. Maresca was a wonderful person, great teacher, made us memorize the times table every single morning!!!! I was just protecting my sibling that day!!!
Rocco Jr.
I had Miss Maresca in 3rd in 1957 I was born in June of 1951 grade- it’s entirely possilbe she wa s around at least 10 or 15 years prior. She was kind of older when I had her. So you might be right.
Anthony Oliva,
Were we in the same class?
My sister Louise and & I were born in 1952.
Anthony Oliva,
Can’t be 1957 for me. 1952 – that would make me only five years old. Third grade would be about 8 yrs old.
Annie:
I was born in 1951, in June- I’m confused as to Kindergarten. Are you 5 or 6 in K, if your 5, then you have: K, 5 y/o, 1st grade 6 y/o 2nd grade 7 y/o and 3rd 8 y/o. I hate to admit this but I had to repeat the 5th grade and that’s how I wound up in your class. if you are one year younger then me. I know now that I probably had ADD, but it was assumed I was a bad kid, so I got beat up by the nuns every day, became shell shocked and suffered worsening post truamatic stress disorder so and by the time I made it to 5th grade, I could no longer think normally, and my grades suffered so much adjustments had to be made. I don’t know if this is funny or not..
Does anyone remember the 24 hour dinner on 9th street and 5th ave? It always had people in it no matter what hour. It had a big fishtank with fish that looked like they came out of the gowanis canal. They also made great BLT’s!
Neergards pharmacy which I think is still there and the donut shop around the corner of ninth street that was always open but if you went late at night for coffee they would come to the door and unlock it for u and get your order while you waited at the door. They had the best coffee!
Annie,
Thanks for caring about me!
Diane,
Could it possbily be that you CAN’T remember someone (as you said somewhere above.) I’m astonished!
Susan,
Annie and I had an advantage…………you gave us a “heads up” about all the nuns at St. John’s and their expectations since you were three years ahead. I can’t believe we always WANTED to”play” school. Of course, you were always the teacher and taught us well. Thank God for cousins, Debbie and Diane when you were “too old” to play. Mom and dad gave you a beautiful typewriter one Christmas and we just couldn’t BELIEVE that piece of machinery. We were envious but you displayed such patience and taught us how to type…………thanks for that, sis!
Hi Gagliardi Family,
I remember all of you………a wonderful family. Annie and I went to school with Michael (who I believe married Margie Bird (loved her….so sweet), and we used to “hang out” with Anthony (I believe a year younger than us) who was sooooo nice. Your parents were sweethearts.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BOOPSIE!
I’m going to burn dinner for my family……….got to sign off!
ANTHONY OLIVA,
I THOUGHT JAMSIE AND I WERE THE SAME AGE. I WAS BORN IN 51. OH I THINK JAMSIE IS ONE YEAR OLDER THAN ME. HE CAME INTO MY CLASS WAFTER BENG SICK I THINK.
CLOTILDA,
ELEANOR MONDONE RIGHT. SHE WAS SO NICE. SHE OULD ALWAYS STOP BY MY DADS STORE TO TALK TO MY MOM AND HER DAUGHER JOANNE.
ROCCO JR,
DONT MAKE FUN OF ME BEING ON HERE SO MUCH YOU ARE RIGHT BEHIND ME. HAHA I LOVE IT. I JUST CAME HOME FROM FOOD SHOPPING AND HERE I AM AGAIN CHECKING IN. IM ADDICTED. NOT A BAD ADDICTION COULD BE WORSE.
ANNIE,
WHY DID I ALWAYS THINK YOU GUYS WERE MUCH YOUNGER?
oh….joey volpe….there were two joey volpe actually three. joey volpe around 58yrs old and his cousin around 59-60 and joey 59 his dad much older. they lived 21st street between 6th and 7th ave.
i better go cook…… love terry
michael m you know my cousin raymond ramasanto. do you remember when all the guys would hang out on the corner by
damico’s and sing for hours.
I love the 50’s songs . my cousin wrote a song about Rocco’s..
he used to sing it in the clubs, the name of the song was candystore caruso’s.
I also worked with a guy named bernie. He was married to one of the joy girls. we all live in florida……….
To Lucia Pagano,
Say hi to deetsie. How have you been? Havent seen you in many years. I still live in Brooklyn. I have 6 grandchildren. Still the same, going to Bingo everyday. haha what else could i do.
please write back
Hey Bro(Rocco)
Mom said the joey volpe your talking about is a corrections officer, so whichever one is the corrections officer is the one your talking about.
Anthony Oliva where does the rest of your family live?
Please tell them all I said hello and hope they are well!
Clotilda – when you see Denise Cresci please say hi from me. Her brother Eugene was in my 3rd grade class Mrs. Maresca and I had a huge crush on him. In fact I remember we were 9 and he asked me to the movies. Now considering the fact that I wasn’t allowed to cross 5th or 4th Avenues, nor go beyond a certain point in the block without permission, how do you think that worked out. Anyway my family and hers became close through my father and his friendship with her family and her uncles. Her Uncle Eddie is my brother’s godfather.
Rocco – besides Mrs. Maresca going back “100 years” at St. John’s her daughter taught there too – also someone who used to be matchie-matchie with her outfits.
Di – was Pop’s the guy who used to sit in the window in those “shack houses” smoking cigarette butts with a bobby pin? He always wore a hat, had glasses?
Hello cousins – How was Bruno’s trip to Italy Annie? Charlie Jr., Julie and Carsen are going to arrive on Saturday night. My brother-in-law just brought all the baby stuff we need for Carsen. Charlie is dying to welcome his granddaughter – to the house, to the pool to the beach.
Happy birthday Boopsie!!!
Hey Tilly haven’t seen you in so long happy birthday to your mom hope u and your family are well
Hey terry G.
Do you remember the old house on 22nd that was in disrepair and there was an old woman who used to sit in the window and we were so afraid of that house we thought it was haunted
and this man I think it was a man but it could have been a woman who had tons of cats and they used to walk down the block with him or her
Who was that old lady in the window?
Hi Everyone I am also not computer savy so I have my daughter Typing for me. I just want to say I could not wait to speak to everyonr since Louise gave me the site. I am both happy and overwhelmed from what I Have been reading over the last 45 Minutes!!!! Don’t really know where to begin…I lived on 21st btwn 4 and 5th ave accross from St. Anna’s club, next door were the Aversano’s, Joey and Vinny. They were the best years of my life! My sister is Rosa and my brother is Angelo. My sister and I have moved to New Jersey and my Brother has moved to CT.
to continue what I was saying… I would love to be included in any kind of reunion that we have. I’m trying to remember everyone from the neighborhood, but having short term memory at my age is hard. I remember the St. Anna’s feast on my block. D’Amico’s Pastery store (best lemon ice in town) I remember attending St. John’s and do you remember the stations of the cross every week?
Gotta go talk to you later
You all keep mentioning Volpi. Does anyone remember Dolores Volpi?
She was hit by a motocycle and had a plate put in her head. Really nice girl. We were in the same class and went to Bay Ridge together. I haven’t seen her in years. Is she related to Joey Volpi?
Is there a Geraldine Gagliardi? I was in a class at St. John’s with Geraldine – I think. We graduated around 1956 ir 1957.

CLARA david and toniann said hi,we are laughing because when you said bailey was a puppy, remember when she was gonna go to obiedent school(not sure how to spell) lol your uncle sonny said”i think yous are all crazy the dog is gonna go to school” when your uncle sonny used to call my house if he had to leave a message he would say” pooh pick up the phone its uncle sonny across the street”then when i would return the call or meet him outside he would say”how come pooh didnt answer the phone for me” i wish i still had those recordings with his voice.he thought we where all nuts how we treated our dogs.i miss sitting out on the 22nd with the gang your mom, sonny and jeanette ,the gucciones then when kristen moved there we even had her hanging out with us.you had to see one night we seen a rat he ran like from the gucciones next door that little driveway, everybody ran and we forgot your uncle sonny he couldnt see so he kept standing up and sitting back down he said wheres the rat we forget to take him from the chair we peed ourselves sonny guc ,rosie and connie all tryed to squeeze thru there doorway at onceand we left poor sonny on the chair lol
Oh boy, this site has really taken off more than i could ever imagine. I’m glad more people came on besides all those old cousins of mine! 🙂 Michael, you see we finally have people on just about our age.
Clotilda! How the heck are ya?! My God, when my sister told me you were on, i swear i saw your face right in front of me! It really seems like yesterday! I told Terry immediately, yes I remember her, she lived on 22nd then on 5th avenue and her mom is boobsie! Some things I remember, not much!
I went back to read all the entries and I have so many comments! but by the time I got to the end of the entries, I forgot what I wanted to write. I have to go back and take notes. One question: Gaggs, wasn’t there a Johnny Gaggs? I see a Sonny mentioned. Also the Gagliardi’s, who was the kindergarten teacher? Rocco was who to her? I can’t remeber. I sometimes think I lived in a bubble back then, my memory is not as good as my sister!
Also does anyone remember Cowboy? Was he Johnny Gaggs? OK stop lauging, I said my memory is not too good.
Also, Anthony Oliva I’m confused, are you Jamsey’s brother? i went to school with John also. I remember that year like it was yesterday! I remember him coming to school and then he was out sick for a while, then I remembered the day Sister margaret Mary told us that he passed. I remember her taking us down to the funeral home to pay our respects. Very sad.
I was friends with jeannie, Geraldine, and Christine. We worked at Seafareres together and use to have a blast.
Tilly
The stories about Uncle Sonny so funny! LOL I swear as I sit here reading this I can see the whole thing play out right before my eyes. I guess that’s what memories are for so we can always keep these special people with us.
Louse & Annie, I’ll always have your backs, that is what big sisters are for. Happy Birhtday Boopise, many more. A big hello to all the Gagliardi family. My memory might not be as sharp as it used to be but I definitely have very fond memories of Rocco’s Candy Store. Our dad would go every night to buy his newspaper and bring us back candy in those little brown bags. A big hug to Teresa Gallo, glad to see you on this site. I absolutely remember Joey Volpe. Yes he was very cool. Does anybody remember a guy nicknamed “Knocker”.? He was always saying stuff to get me mad and finally one day he was picking on my sisters and I got so angry I started screaming at him. I guess he didn’t expect this little girl to tell him off. Can’t remember his real name. I loved the 4th of July fireworks on the block. The whole block smelled like a war zone afterwards. It was the best of times. Hi Diane, wish I had your memory. Don’t get fired.

Lori-
Millie Gags was the K teacher. Johnny Gags was Rocco’s and Sonny Gags younger brother. You mean the Sheriff, that was Mike the Sheriff, Rocco, Sonny, and Johnny’s Father. He made the greatest egg creams. Yes, I am Jamesy’s brother Anthony. Can you tell me a story about my brtoher John?

Terry,
So sorry to hear about David. I’m sure you son is a doll like David.
Yes, Margarite came from just above 5th ave on 16th steet. She lives in Staten Island now with her husband Jimmie, and had 4 kids. Unfortunately, I only see her at wakes and weddings now, but always think of her fondly.
Gagliardi’s:
Is that you Clair? Remember Tina from 21st street? I used to hang out with you sister Pat. How is she?
Hi Di, hope all is well and congrats on your new place! You must be enjoying it!

Guzzo
You are talking about terry and pat’s sister Claire, I am their cousin Clara Marie Gagliardi Rocco Gagliardi’s daughter.
Nilda I was named after my grandmother Clara Gagliardi who died before I was born in 69. I have heard wonderful stories about her she lived on 21st street with my grandfather, the sherrif, who most people know from Rocco’s candystore. I defenitely remember your name from the neighborhood.
I Lived on 19th Street between 5th & 6th Ave. I rembember a lot of the places and events of living there. My Borther-In-Law was Rocco from the candy Store on 21 street and 5th Ave. I went to Bay Ride Girls High and I am enjoying reading about the old times and the happenings back then It was a wonderful place to grow up. I do remember the Thangsgiving begging while my parents prepared our dinner. also the games we played in the street, especially Stick Ball and Green light Red lIght, May I, on the hot summer days someone would turn on the fire hydrant for the kids and hope no one would get in trouble. On Saturdays we would go to the Sanders Theater for the matinees that they showed the whole afternoon. Coney Island was the best with Nathen’s Hot dogs. Damico’s Pastery was my favorite Place for ice’s and the best pasteries around, Charlotte Russe’s. I live in Pennsylvania now 41years, but have just gone back to visit Coney Island with My Daughter-In-Law who has never been there and had a great time. I still keep in touch with a few friens but one especially my girlfriend Pat. She and I call and we talk about the old times. As amatter of fact I ame going to send a copy of all these memories to her. Thanks for all the past memories.
Clara Gagliardi,
How are you. Deetzie and I always wondered where you were and how you are. How is your Mom, Millie? We would love to see you again and, write me at [email protected], Deetzie said to write him at [email protected],, I will give you my phone number we have to get together, we have to go back to PA and make more wonderful memories, tell Rocco Jr. and your mom I said hello and write me so we can get together. This site is amazing how many people we wondered about read it and wrote and now we can be reunited hopefully. What a strong tight neighnborhood just shows how many good, strong, decent people came from there to have so much to say and so excited everytime someone new gets on this blog. I love it, it is my new most favorite passtime. Nilda I see you are loving it to and Anthony you are having a ball. We all deserve the heartwarming affects it has on all of us. How the words come from the heart, like Franny Bruno and her stories, I love it, especially her remembering I wanted Phyllis to take her with us. Little things like that mean so much especially as you get older and more sentimental. OK I was just checking in and Clara please write me at my email address. Remember the bear incident and PA as it was yesterday. Alot of good times with you Dad and the candy store. I worked in it with Deetzie. Him and your Dad were very close. Loved every minute of it. Bye for now.
Clotilda how are you and how is my pal Boopsie. I have to see her tell her to write to me at [email protected] or you do so I can call her or she can call me. Glad to hear everyone is fine and your brothers are well.
