You obviously were in my class at St. John’s but I can’t place you. What is your last name? There were two Michaels in the class, I think. Michael Buddensick and Michael Falcone.
You mentioned going to visit the first nuclear sub — I do remember that, as well as going to the World’s Fair and the movies. If you graduated with me, do you remember our 8th grade trip, where we had a picnic. Don’t remember where it was tho’.
Do you see anyone from the class? What ever happened to Brian McMahon? Ran into Dennis Smith around 20 years ago, when our children attended the same school. He said then he was moving to PA. Just found Judy Cavallo, after all those years. Trying to set up a lunch with her soon. Take care.
Oh my freakin’ God!!!!!!My bestest friend in the world, Debby A, who I met thru her wonderful mom 15 years ago as our children both attended the same nursury school here in hick town Howell NJ, told me about this awesome site!

I always remember you being sooooo pretty. You are in Howell? We have to have lunch, My debby included.

How about the “Seafarers” on the corner of 21st and 4th?
Freakin’ St. John’s was mentioned. It was an 8 year school, but I managed to spend 10 years there… Figure it out!

Hi Everyone,
OK first: Danny Wall (fat Danny), has two sisters; his older sister’s name escapes me, but his younger sister’s name is Linda. Danny was my age and he would have been 62 this August had he lived. He passed away several years ago, a result of drugs.
Second: Champy Biscuti is Eleanora Biscuti’s brother. We all grew up in the same house. My grandfather was Aniello Biscuti and lived on the first floor. My family, Dad (Al or Doc), Mom (Palma), 2 brothers, Albert and Neil, lived on the second floor. Ellie and her family lived on the third floor.
Next to our house there was a small house that the Elliot family lived in, then Mrs. Perotta’s house (the Orlandi family lived in Mrs. Perotta’s house, because her daughter married Bonto Orlandi. Babe and Bonto bought a house across the street on the same side as the school). Next to the Perotta house was the Wall’s house. Next came the Giambois’ house (It was really an apartment house, then Loretta Baretta’s house, next was the Laconti family (they kept chickens and provided fresh eggs) they had a big driveway and I think they rented out garage space.
Susan,
As long as you and John are still together, I have no problem accepting the blame for taking you out that night.
By the way, St. John’s school was directly across from my house. I’ll never forget everyone going in the “Johnny Pump”, that was in front of the girl’s school yard, even the grown ups. Then later they made us use the sprinkler attachment.
Also, did any of you go to the open house they had at the school before they turned it into condos?
Did anyone go to Saint Rocco’s recreation hall to Roller Skate?
I know I skipped around a lot, but the memories just keep coming.
Also, Ellie and I were on Saint Anna’s float for a number of years pinning the money on the ribbons. I have pictures of the boys in white shorts and button white shirts, and all us girls in white dresses.
The flost was kept in the warehouse next to Dorothy and Camille Biscuti’s house.
Well, enough for now. Keep well everyone.
Smiles : – ) Maria Elena
Hi Festina Guzzo,
So glad cousin Debbie made you aware of the “neighborhood” site! Hope you and your family are doing great and that we’ll see you soon.
Hi Festina. Glad to see you got on this site. It’s like going down memory lane. Sorry to hear about you and Vinny. Try and come to the reunion on September 21st at Terry’s house. Very nice of her to do it. We could all go together.
Mary Elena ,yes John and I after 38 years are still together and doing well. My ,sisters and I went to the reunion at St Johns. It was good. A little freaky seeing some of the things the nuns used to discipline their “students”, particularly the long thin stick. The class rooms looked smaller than we remembered. I remember going to St Rocco’s for roller skating. It was fun. I also remember going to a summer recreation program at the public school near there. Well that’s all for now. Take care.
Oh My God! What great memories, I grew up and still live on 17th Street between 3rd and 4th Avenue. We are having a reunion August 2nd. I went to (and work there now) P.S.124 then I.S.88 and John Jay Class of 1974. It is wonderful reading about our neighborhood. Does anyone remember Lady Fair? I worked there for 10 years, Ables Childrens Furniture Store was on the other side of 5th & 13th street. OH! Who remembers Burt Reynolds”s making a movie on 16th Street and 5th ave? How about the poolroom on 11Th street and 5th ave, also Erwins and Bloosom’s children’s clothing stores. Let’s keep the memories alive!!!
Nilda here:
Hola: Donna u beat me to it. isn’t great hearing the old stories of the neighborhood. I too still live in the neighborhood, i live on 17th street.
it brings back fond memories. i lived on 698 5th Avenue, a 2 family house over a store which was nick the barber. I lived on top of Florie Oliva, the Olivas were my extended family. I never dreamed i would be burying one of them. Anthony, Jamesy, Paulie, Geraldine and Christian it was good seeing u’all, even under the circumstances. i failed to tell u (the Oliva’s) that we on 17t have a cancer drive every year, ALL the proceeds go to the American Cancer Society, we post all our families names who have died of cancer and Johns names has been posted since we started the Cancer Drive i believe 3 or 4 years ago, so sadly enough we will be adding Jeanies name this year. This year the Cancer Crusade will be held on August 23rd, So those that live in the neighboring states or still living in Brooklyn, please come we have many festivities, flee market, 50/50, we sell homemade food, raffles and more. the date is Aug. 23rd.
I recognize many of the names that were mentioned. i see that many graduated from St. Johns around 59-60; i graduated hs, clara barton in 64 so i believe i am older than many of you. i remember many of you because i worked in LuDons, the beauty parlor which was on 17th and 5th, i worked there for many years. So many of your names sound familiar because your parents came into the shop. i fondly remember the Mieles, i used to do Roseanns hair, i remember you Pat and Carol, but most of all i remember your mother Connie Miele. She would come up to Flories almost every day if not every day and had coffee. I remember she once told me of my children, “When they are small you have small problems and when they are big you have big problems, so enjoy them when they are small.” i always remembered that and i did enjoy my children. Does anyone remember the chinese laudry on 20th street bet. 5th and 6th avenue? I haven’t read all the blogs but did anyone mention Camberlango realestate, it is still there, they have posted on their walls real old time pictures.
i remember purchasing my doll clothes in Germains, that was some treat for me and i still have pictures with my children and Santa.
Lucille, i too remember dressing up at Holloween and going around to house to house. that was great fun.
Does anyone remember the Joys formerly from 23 street, that’s where i lived they moved to 21st years later? There was Linda, Barbara, Sheila married to Donnie, they had 2 brothers Jeffrey and Dennis, best of of their mother Betty Joy? Do i ever have fond memories of the Joys.
i remember Jackie and Pepi and their children i used to do Jackies hair, i think i did everyones hair in the neighborhood at one time or another.
this summer i saw Carolyn Nigres son, he was going to work, still looks the same.
after this one, i will stop writing, but i spend some time yesterday with Pinky and Carol Riches from 23rd street. Thank God they are fine.
it was super reading about u’all and knowing that all is fine.
Lucia thanks for turning me on to the site.
.
Guzzo: How is your brtoher Joe, we were good friends.
Terry, Ok I have to call Jamesy anyway. Where are we meeting on the 9/21. ?
Hey Sue and Louise – Good to hear from you. What a great site. Deb told me about the re-union – I will do my best to come. It should be fun to get together with the “old neighborhood.”
Anthony – My brother lives in Sayerville NJ with his wife and daughter. He’s fine. I know you and he shared the same “crowd.”
I am sure you share some crazy memories!
Hey, remember Deluca Soda on 21st between 4th and 5th?
What ever happened to Ralphi and Bobby Perisi? How about that guy Frankie who used to hang out at the soda factory. I think he had a brother named Nicky, they lived on 30th street between 4th and 5th in the big apartment house?
I remember seeing Frankie at my cousin Vito DeLeo’s memorial service. Vito died at the WTC.
How about the grocery store on 21st street (4th & 5th) owned by Josephine and Anthony parents? (I forget their last name.) I know Anthony – such a sweet kid passed away, as most that crowd did from AIDS, and Josephine had a lot of kidney problems.
My cousin Joe DeLeo (Annette’s brother) from that crowd is one who was lucky. He has a family and grands too living in Staten Island.

Whenever I travel the Garden State Parkway I make time to pay a visit to my fellow Viet Nam Brothers on that wall. I was in Nam from Dec 1968 thru Dec 1969 with the 101ST ARBN. You are right that memorial is not well known, but it is very well done and powerful tribute. It is definately worth a visit. Many thanks to your brother for his involvement.

Guzzo,
I just read your note. I am third cousin to Vito DeLeo and remember him well. We were around the same age. This is the first I heard that he die at the WTC. Really sad to hear about it.
Our families have not been in touch for years. I live in Manhattan, Santina in Howell, my brother Sal in Marlboro. When my mom and dad were alive we visited them on 4th Ave. His dad, Sal was a barber and he was also a poet in Italy. I have a photo of him as a young man. It is really sad that the old timers are gone — so we do not see the extended families anymore.
Marie
I remember buying dollls clothes at Germain’s. They were all bunched together on tables, and you had to sort thru them.
The soda factory was right next to my apartment house on 21st street. I remember playing kings on the factory’s wall.
The Joys lived at 219 21 street for quite a few years. I think Linda got married from there. Actually Barbara and Linda still live in Brooklyn, not far from me.
I do remember Lady and Maternity Fair. I shopped in both.
The grocery store on 21st street was Jimmy and Shirley’s. Their name was Clemente. The pool hall was Joe Longo’s. Actually my son just married Joe Longo’s granddaughter! Small world…
Went to HS with Rosemary Orlandi but lost touch a long time ago.
Also went to school with Bobby Parisi. His brother Joey and my brother were in Nam at the same time and his parents used to come to our apartment and our parents would read the letters our brothers wrote.
Capo’s candy store — where Pete made the best malteds.
Love reading all the memories..
George: I’m told Dee Dee passed away a while ago.. She was my child hood sweetheart-and my partner in crime-we used to shop lift together in Mays dept store downtown bklyn.. It was never a problem if we got caught because Dee Dee would make belivee she was crying and beg to be let go. /They would let us go and we would have a big laugh on the way home on the RR train. Who are you and how do you know Dee Dee.
Festina, tell Joey I said hello. And I can’t belive you remember Ralphie and Bobby Pairsi- We were great friends-You’ve brought back so many MORE memories mentioning them. But I loved your brother Joey Guzzo-we had fun together…
Hi Fess –
I KNEW you’d be on here sooner or later! FYI, I went to grammar school, junior high and high school in SI with your cousin Nicky DeLeo (who lived on 21st Street). We were in first grade together at St. John’s. He lives in Marlboro now (married to Diane Chiapperino). Hope all is well with your girls and grandchildren – sorry to hear about you and Vinny. Hope you are enjoying your summer. Love to you and all.
Thanks so much Nilda for turning me on to this website, my name is Pinky, I lived in the neighborhood for many years, I remember well the Suaratos, the Joys, all the stores and people in the neighborhood, I was with John DeVilio for many years, were not together any longer, but I remember when he hung out in Deetzee’s club on 22nd street, I remember Eleanor and Joann (the Moose) from 22nd street. Alan and Dennis Taglianettis, Boopsie Costa, her kids Dominick,Frankie, Anthony and my son David is married to Boopsie’s daughter Tilly (Clotilda) I have a beautiful granddaughter Toniann, they still live in the neighborhood, I remember all the things mentioned by everyone on this site, very sorry to hear about Jeanie Oliva’s (Gaeta) passing, send my sympathy to her family. Barbie Ann I don’t know if you remember me, but I remember you….saw your brother Ralphie at a MS benefit a few years back, does anyone remember Mikey skins, I’m sure the Oliva family remembers him, I remember the Maiellos (Stella,Gene) from 21st. they lived in Donnie Suaratos grandmother house, I remember Pepe and Jackie (she gave me a rice pudding recipe I make till today) and Anna Viviani and her family, Roseann Gazzillo, the Joys I remember mostly, I have very fond memories of them, Sheila was married to Donnie Suarato, that was a grand neighborhood, too bad everyone moved away, and my brother Robbie Riches is married to Ralph Marsala cousin Gina Puglisi, her Mom is Marie Puglisi (formally Greco) I lived on 23rd Street between 6 & 7th Avenues, I love reading all the things remembered, Mike’s candy store, crazy Rocco, I remember he use to chase people from the store, he was hysterical………I remember Felix’s Restaurant, we ate there every Friday or Saturday night as did the whole neighborhood, the Avon & Prospect Movie theatre’s on 9th street. My Mother, sister and I saw Phycho there. I remember the big toy store on 9th street and fifth avenue, one year at Christmas time we had toys on lay a way there and there was a huge snowstorm, I remember walking there in the evening and pulling the Christmas toys for the kids from there to home in a huge carbord box with a piece of clothesline attached all the way home. I also remember the Gas company store on 22nd street and fifth avenue, shoe box on 19th street and fifthe, Ben’s Pork Store, Danny’s butcher and Franks butcher both on 21-22nd streets. Those were the days, I really miss the neighborhood and all the people that lived there. It was such a pleasure reading all the wonderful e-mails from everyone.
Margaret
Sorry, I can’t recall the eight grade class trip you mentioned. I have vague memories of going to Clove Lake S.I. once, but I think it was with Fr. Strianese and the altar boys. I’m very impressed with your ability to recall (and correctly spell) last names. I might just nominate you for “class historian”, but first I have a few tough ones for you.
There was a girl who was with us until about the fourth grade. She was Irish. She wore her hair in banana curls kind of like Shirley Temple, and she use to get up in front of the class and do a jig on St Patrick’s Day. As I recall, she had a rather abrasive personality (look who’s talking), and I remember once having a shouting match with her. Speaking of which, although most of my memories have faded over time, one I vividly recall, is the time (in the eight grade) Donna and I shouted back and forth at each other. I remember almost every word she said. I can only imagine what I said to her. She probably doesn’t remember either me or the event, but if she does, I hope she believes what the good sisters taught us about redemption and forgiveness. BTW, what she said about me was mostly true.
The other brain teaser I have for you concerns the two African-American girls , they were sisters ( literally) who were in our fifth, maybe sixth grade class. I remember thinking how out of place they must have felt. After all, just being Irish in that school was struggle enough for me. And finally, there was a boy whose name was Kenneth, I think he left us in the second or third grade. He was very well behaved and was( or should have been) our class president.
Now Margaret, if you can fill in the details above I’ll go from impressed to amazed, and despite warnings from my wife ( a Kearney classmate of yours) about posting private info on public forums, I’ll use my last name. Thank you for remembering me. You were always very thoughtful, and it’s nice “talking” to you again after all these years.
Mickey
(who, in the eight grade sat in the girls row behind Marie P, who sat behind Margaret C, who is now known as Margaret R)
GEROGE,

Nilda you are a memory that completes the neighborhood. One of my dearest friends from those days because you always made me feel beautiful with my haircuts. Boopsie, I would love to talk to her. I remember Clotilda like it was yesterday. A DOLL and that family was all personality. I remember Pinky, Johnny Devillio’s wife. I am Deetzie’s wife. It is getting a routine to check this blog everyday. ANTHONY GO BACK TO WORK. I AM
Hola: michele suarato i remember you when you were just a child, you were a beautiful child, much like your mother. Every one in yur family was beautiful. How is your mother? .
bobbi ann: this is for you i used to do your hair, and how i used to admire you and your sister Lorretta; you would get your hair done up and proceed to put on your make up, get dressed for a good time. i always thought u both were sooooo beautiful. like i said earlier your entire family were goodlooking. i remember your mother she was always so kind and always willing to feed me and my children when i went to everyones hair.
for a time i was the traveling hairdresser, that is how so many of these names sound familiar to me.
i remember fondly rocco and milly they were very kind to me and my children. i remember mostly about rocco, i always liked to dress my children in white for the summer, and like some one said stopping at roccos was a ritual, he would always give my children a chocolate bar and then he would laugh, but you had to love him. i remember his father well, his name forsakes me now, he had the store before rocco. The Gagliardi’s (the spelling might be wrong) they were a great family.
Remember chi chi and tessie, their daughter marie and her good looking brother. when marie and i first met we didn’t like each other, there was an altercation, but we became good friends, i did her hair, tessie’s hair and all the “Gags” hair for years. great family, very hospitable.
does anyone remember Anthony Micari, he is related to the Capos? he married my sister mary. the best brother in law anyone could have.
i dont know where to start first hi lucia this is clotilda boobsies daughter who use to run to see you whenever you came to 22nd street how are you and dietzy to everyone else im trying to write a hundred things at once my mother inlaw pinky told my daughter about this site about 2 hours ago and i cant believe all that im reading im hooked already my eyes are crossing from reading all these comments this is great hi lori deangelo your mom margie was one of the best and i remember eating my bologna sandwhiches in your fathers store. these stories really bring back alot of memories
Festina and I spent more time going over all these entries. She spent so much more time in the neighborhood than I did kept trying to refresh my memories about so many people. Our moms grew up there too and keep feeding us questions since neither has a computer.
She was trying to explain the game “kings” to us last night, and then we see it mentioned here.
Pinky – when you mentioned Boopsie Costa and her kids, I could actually hear her voice calling her sons and daughter – that name Clo – tillllll – da. I lived on 22nd just up the block from her.
Fes and I were talking about downtown and going to A&S and getting the best ice cream parfaits at the spot under the escalator. Nothing like it!
Remember “Miracle Corner” – I think that’s the store my cousins Annie and Louise took me for my 16th birthday to pick out something I liked as my present from them. Then we went home for cake. I’ll never forget it AND I remember what it was they bought for me. So different – I wonder if years from now my own daughter will recall details of the “Sweet 16” party we gave her……………………
Mickey – when you asked about an Irish girl with banana curls the name Jane Danylchuk came to mind – but I knew her that way when she was in 3rd grade. She had the most beee-oooo-teee-full light brown hair always done in long banana curls although can’t say I recall an abrasive personality.
What a movie this all would make – how do you create a cast of characters like this with the central plot in common and then all the individual stories!!!!
wow, hi everyone, what a blast from the past, st. john’s, rocco’s candy store, st. anna’s. i am the youngest of sonny and jeanettes kids, we grew up on 22nd between 6th and 7th ave. both my parents passed away, so i really never go to the neighborhood anymore, but what great memories. connie miele, flory oliva, both great friends of my moms. i know many of the names i see, i was wondering what ever happened to john john, he was connies grandson and my mom used to babysit for him. hope everyone is well and happy, and it is so nice to see i am not the only one with wonderful memories, and wow the bottle gang, i thought my dad started that, but then again it could have been crazy uncle rocco. take care all
Debby
No, that wasn’t her name. I think I know it, but I’m just testing Margaret’s outstanding memory, And you’re right about the the cast of characters. Big Mike, little Mike, Sally Ears, Tony, and Marie. Badda Bing Badda Boom! Fuggetaboutit! All we need is Martin Scorsese and we can make a movie.
wow nilda is that you???????????????? amazing, i dont know if you would remember me but i remember you and your kids, from 23rd street. nice to see you, terry
No offense to my Italian friends intended by my last comment. Like most Irishmen I married an Italian girl. Which reminds me, she’ll be home soon, I better get the sauce on.
ciao
Michele Suarato, I remember you too! And yes you were the beautiful child…hope all is okay with you, I wonder if you remember me….but I also remember Peter, Donna Marie, Toniann, (that’s how my grandaughter got her name) Gina and little Donnie. Regards to your Dad Michele

Hey Festina, It’s great to see you on this site. I don’t know if you remember my whole family. They use to call my mother Chicina(Frances)and my Dad Dador(sp?), Salvatore. My brother Jack use to ride a motorcycle up and down the block and all the neighbors screemed because most of the time it was early in the moring. He used to hang out with with Gito. Your mom would remember. Gasper, Anntoinette, Marie (we call Mary)(she posts on this site) friends with Angela Pazzaglia and friends closer to forth. Sal ( used to be called Sally Bones) He was friends with Chickie Aversano, Whitey Derns (I think) Butchie Gibbs, Anthony Marielli. Then me, I think you are younger then me about 5 to 7 yrs younger. Who lives in Marlboro your cousin Joey or your brother? My brother Sal lives in Marlboro, I live in Jackson just off of Howell near Rt. 9. Say hi to Gina its been so many years since I had seen her. Where is she living? Sorry to hear about Vito. Sounds bad, but who died in your family, who’s left. My brother Jack died in 1997. I am still trying to get family info maybe you can get some info from your mom and email me. [email protected] or [email protected] I have 55 1st and 2nd cousins in Sicily on my fathers side. But don’t know much of my mothers side. If your mom can tell me all the DeLeo family and all grandparents names. Uncles and whatever she can remember, I’d love it. Yes it would be nice to meet with you.
Remember the drive in theatre your mom and dad took us to. Was my first drive-in. I think of that every once in a while. Talk again

Mickey,
Okay here I go.. Irish girl with banana curls, Geraldine Cush. It was Kenneth Guerrieri who left school in Mrs. Garcia’s class. I remember he, Judy Cavallo and myself visiting Mrs. Garcia’s apartment in the Garden Apts. on 23rd and 4th. I’m not sure why we went.
I don’t remember any African-American girls in our class. I think there was a boy for a while named John. Now sure.
You mentioned Marie P.’s graduation party. Was I there? I remember going to Helene Lilly’s party on 7th Ave. It was in her basement. Did you ever have a snowball fight with me, Judy and Marie P. on 17th street? I think Eddie Kosinski was there too.
You say you sat behind Marie P. in 8th grade. I think I know who you are. Are your initials BM?
Terry Gagliardi-
Do you remember me? How are your two brothers Anthony and Micheal doing? Your Uncle Rocco coined the term “Bottle-ettes”- that was my sister Geraldine, Maria Tombasco, Paula and Margie Calsiano, and others I don’t remember etc etc. He knew they drank on the side. Or was the Bottle Gang another group of victims of Roccos famous nick names and commentary. Your Uncle had a great heart and he was very kind to my family especially my sisters and younger brother Paul. I loved going to Farell’s bar with him and down pitchers of beer, I could listen to Rocco all night. As you know we lived above Rocco and Millie and thier kids on 22 nd street. I don’t even remember him charging my sisters rent. The best times were to go to the candy store at 5:30 am and help him set up the New papers and have coffee at the counter. The Sheriff made the greatest egg creams too. Your mother and father were good people.. Nice to see you here…
Hi Nilda- You made it to the blog of all blogs. I haven’t heard from Wendy yet. Tell her to be sure to call me…Love ya
Terry Angelo, Your killing me. You bring up Susan and Margaret Bird what memories I have of them. Now I’m thinking about the Garden Apts on 23rd and 24th street where they lived. I remember the court yards and hanging out on all the individual stoops in there and being able to go from 23rd street to 24 street. Is anyone in touch with the Bird sisters?? I can see susan birds face in my mind. I don’t think I remember Margaret.
Mickey who are you. Do I know you and do you know me and my family? I guess your older than me..
Hey Pinky,
Thanks for the kind words about my sister Jeanne,
I remember you and Johnnie Devillio very well. I’m younger then my brother Jamesy, but I knew Johnnie Divilio and his younger brother Chris. How is Chris doing and is Johnnie D still around? I remember Johnnie D playing Moda all the time with Deetzie and Jamesy. They did a lot of screaming. I played Moda sometimes too and I even remember Dee Dee Sharalli playing it.
Does anyone remember Delesio, I forgot his first name but he had a younger brother Neil I hung out with.
