EVERYONE,
HOW ABOUT A REUNION IN SEPTEMBER. JUDY OCCHIOGROSSO CATALANO WILL BE UP FROM FLORIDA. I AM LOOKING AT SUNDAY, AFTERNOON BBQ AT MY HOUSE IN S.I. GOOD FOR BKLYN AND NJ. RIGHT IN BETWEEN. I THINK IT IS SEPTEMBER 20TH OR 21ST WHATEVER THAT SUNDAY IS. IF INTERESTED LET ME KNOW. [email protected] LOVE TERRY
I KNOW JAMSIE OLIVA WILL BE THERE. OH ANY OF YOU WHO MOVD AWAY LIKE FLORIDA CALIFORNIA ETC. JOIN IN.
Hi to all my Park Slope Friends,
This site is so amazing, brings back such wonderful childhood memories. I grew up on 19th Street between 4th and 5th Ave. We called it South Brooklyn then.
I am now living in Staten Island – 33 years to be exact. I am married to Richard for 36 years and have two sons – Richard 33 years old and David 29 years old. (both are attorneys) I’m a proud mama!!
I have two beautiful granddaughters (both are Richard’s daughters).
Sarah who is 5 and starting kindergarten in Sept. and Emily who will be 3 in September. They are the loves of my life.
Wanted to say Hi to the Lentini twins. I can remember sitting in your kitchen on 22nd street doing homework. I’m such a “nerd”. I loved school so much that I made a career out of it. Have been teaching for he last 22 years. Looking forward to retirement Soon I hope.. T
To Anthony Oliver and the Oliver family, I extend my deepest sympathy on the loss of your sister. I will keep you in my prayers.
Anthony, you were in my class in St. Johns, as well as the Lentini twins, and Catherine Paladino.
Someone mentioned the Orlandi’s from 21st St. If it is the Orlandi family I’m thinking of, Anthony Orlandi married a girl named Susan who is a paraprofessional at the school where I teach. Anthony is a fireman. He is a little younger than me. I think he was in my sister Annette’s class.
Sister in law Franny Bruno Eskew Saracino turned me on to this site. Thanks!
Hi Sister-In-Law, Maria …. Yes – you truly have the best sons ever.
And two beautiful granddaughters. So glad we are still in each other’s lives. Glad to see you write. Love you!
Terry – thanks for the offer to use your house for a reunion. Are you sure? It is a great idea given your location. I’d be happy to help. Having said that, I’m not sure when I will be moving to Florida. Assuming I’ll still be around in Sept.
Hi Flo Rosadio (Catalano) – hope you are well. Probably haven’t seen you since Judy and Richie’s bridal party.. Remember the floppy hats?
And I agree – no one should ‘bash’ anyone on this site. Aren’t there enough problems in this world? At one point there was an entry or two (not mentioning any names JC) – that sounded like junior high.
This is supposed to be a PEACEFUL PLACE where we can all
‘GO HOME’
Peace to All!
Hi to you too, Maria (Aversano) Eskew!
You and Richard are grandparents………that’s wonderful!
I can also remember doing homework at your home on 19th Street, and I loved your beautiful mother. She was such a sweetheart! My mother would visit with me while you and I studied together. On one visit we left your home and my mother made a point to tell me how impressed she was that you washed your own “uniform socks” when you came home from school! Of all the things to remember! Of course, I made sure I began washing my socks.
There was a girl in our class named Barbara (not Paladino), who you were friendly with. She was very pretty, tall and popular. For some reason, she sticks out in my head. Do you remember who I’m referring to?
I’m sure everyone remembers Theresa Golino (now Gallo), and her brother, Angelo (little sister, Rosa.) They lived on 21st Street. I was (and still am) very good friends with her. I just called her and hooked her up with this site. Theresa, Annie and I attended St. John’s together, Bay Ridge H.S. and even worked in New York as secretaries at the same company! We were inseparable. Theresa now lives in Manalapan with her husband, Vinny. She has two beautiful daughters.
Maria, how is your sister, Annette?
Hope to see you soon!!!
Hi Franny Bruno!
You’ve written so many times here and I have not said hi to you, directly. Thank you for your sweet comment about my sisters and I. You were always so nice to us. You indicated the past in numbers…..wow…..can’t believe it’s been that long.
I hope we can all see each other at the reunion Terry is planning!
LOUSIE,
I WENT TO SCHOOL WITH ANGELO GOLINO. MY FRIEND ANGELA IS MARRIED TO THERESA’S HUSBAND’S BROTHER. ANGELA WENT TO H.S WITH MY SISTER MICHELE AND I MET ANGELA WHEN OUR KIDS WERE IN PS 229 IN BKLYN. HOW IS ANGLEO? YOU KNOW IT IS AMAZING HOW WE ALL BONDED GOING TO SCHOOL TOGETHER. WEW ALL WERE SUCH GOOD FRIENDS AS KIDS IT DID NOT MATTER IF YOU WERE A BOY OR A GIRL YOU JUST HAD GOOD FRIENDSHIPS AS KIDS. YOU DID NOT HAVE TO DATE TO BE GOOD FRIENDS WITH THE BOYS. I AM SO HAPPY I GREW UP WHERE I DID. I DID NOT HAVE MUCH AS A KID BUT I REMEMBER BEING HAPPY. I THINK THIS IS WHY I REMEMBER SO MUCH FROM GROWING UP WHERE WE DID. I ALWAYS SAY ON THIS SITE I CAN REMEMBER SO MUCH FROM THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND THE PEOPLE BUT MAN I’M FOREVER FORGETTING MY CELL PHONE OR LOOKING FOR SOMETHING. GUESS IT IS THE GE LONG TERM MEMORY SHORT TERM FORGET ABOUT IT… LOL LOVE TERRY LOVE TO YOUR MOM. TELL HER I SAID HI AND I ALWAYS REMEMBER ALL THE NICE THINGS SHE HAD TO SAY ABOUT MY MOM. SHE MADE ME SO HAPPY THE LAST TIME I TALKED TO HER.
Terry – sorry to hear about your parents and your husband. I will let my mother know. My family lived in the same house as the Lentini’s (before they moved up the block) 220 22nd. My grandfather Carmine had a barber shop on 17th Street and my grandmother was Antoniette (short, stocky, short gray hair, didn’t speak English)….probably like everybody else’s grandmother!
Flo (Flossie)….forgive me….I was 4 years old and very impressionable. I can assure you I am very grown up as that was 45 years ago.
Terry Angelo now I think I remember you. Didn’t you always hang out with Gracie Cohen and Franny Bruno? WHERE IS PHYLLIS???
I am still waiting for something from her. I had seen Gracie about a month before she died. Her and I kept in touch. For the one who asked did she marry Jamesy, no, but I wish she did. Anthony Oliva, HANDS OF GOLD, OR FOR THE BETTER NAME, FLASH, I am so glad you are into this site I can feel your adrenaline rushing reading your blog. Your son is so handsome, you’ve done a good job there flash. I know we will, some of us at least, get together before the year is up, Jamesy and I already talked about it. Carol we just need to figure out what is convenient for everyone, I have a house in Pennsylvania that can hold us all. We might need some blow up mattresses but I have 3 bedrooms a huge couch and plenty of floor space. We can always figure it out later. Maria Colucci was just up visiting her cousin Tony up there for Christmas, we had a great time. We went out together with Jamesy last night and talked about this site again. Heard from Fran Calandrino today and that was a great surprise. She is married to Benny who was friends with Deetzie since they are babies. Good Bless 21st Street and that whole neighborhood. I have to stop I am in work and could go on for hours. Franny Bruno tell Phyllis to send in a blog so I can talk to her. Who ever wrote about the chinese restaurant on 9th Street it was Sun Joy, and you went upstairs. Most of downtown hung out up there. Anyone remember Hazel Hoffman from 9th Street we lived over Henrietta’s the bridal shop. I use to hang out with her alot. Paul Decigle from St. Thomas’s use to be madly in love with her I remember. Good old confirtunity at St. Thomas’s that was the best. Linda Branciforte was my best friend in those days from 21st Street who lived in the same building as Pepe and his family. And speaking of the ball breaker of the century Rocco, as much as I wanted to actually kill him he was such a pain in the ass, he was the best. Him and Millie and the kids would come up to the country with me and Deetzie, and we would have a good time. Deetzie and Rocco were very close. That was the weekend we had the black bear in my yard that wouldn’t go away. This site is addictive a got to go for today. Santina this was a good find. Have a great time at your party Saturday and I hope Toni doesn’t read this site. We will know next week. This site is like Chicken soup it is good for the soul.
Terry….you are so right. We were more than a neighborhood……we were family! I think I realize that even more now as we all recall our past and we, too, did not have much, but we had great times………..just listen to all of us. How many people had what we did? I know I’m grateful!
Angelo Golino married Fran from Bensonhurst (she worked with Theresa, Annie and myself at a company called “Aviquipo” in New York.) That’s how he met her. They live in Connecticut and had three children (are now grandparents.) I’ll let Theresa give more details when she gets a chance to log on. She was so excited about this site and she’ll want to share.
I spoke to my mom and told her what you said about her. She was happy to hear that we are all communicating! My mother said your mother donated the Blessed Mother Statue in St. John’s Chapel. (She thinks she may have also donated the St. Joseph one as well…..wasn’t sure.) In fact, my mother said YOU were always so sweet! I remember that too!
Hi Lucia – Phyl wrote back on July 1. Think you were ‘distracted’ at that time by the pending strike at work. I know she wants to be in touch.
Lucia – can you please send me an email when you have a chance.
[email protected]
I’d like to ‘talk’ to you about Grace. Jamsey and I had a very lengthy conversation about her – and it was helpful. However,
this is one part of my life I really need to have some closure.
Just writing this to you makes me upset.
Back to Phyll:
Here’s a cut-and-paste of part of her entry. Take care Lucia, and
give my best to the Deetz….

Garry Dil,
I sent an email to Eleanor Biscutie with this blog on it.
Hopefully, she will write. I didn’t think it was proper of me to give it out without her permission first.
Hope she writes.
Marie
I think Vinny Aversano was chickie and he married Annette DeLeo. Maria did you live on 21st St bet 3rd n 4th? I did, across the street from the Aversano’s. Are you a sister or cousin? I’m not sure who you are.
Hi Flo Catalano! Do you remember me? I used to hang out, with Camille on your stoop talking to you for ever. I enjoyed those days. You were never mean, but kids see differently. Maybe you were kidding. I don’t think Diane would have felt that way if she knew you at an older age. That was her 4yr old thinking. I had a brother that was very loud, yelled all the time, even when he was happy. When My niece would bring her daughter over, she would scream and cry if Jack was in my house because his loudness scared the crap out of her. We’d laugh. He tried so hard to make friends with Ashley, but she wanted no part of him she was 2. Jack was a loud, sweetheart.
Was there a Robert Orlandi, I think he was in my class.
I have a picture of 6th grade class with Margaret Dritto.(Thank you Margaret for giving me this site.) On the back I wrote everyones name, now if I could only find the picture.
If he wasn’t in that class then he was in my 2nd 6th grade with Camille.
Camille do you know Orlandi?
Terry why doesn’t Margaret come on? I still haven’t heard from her. Many people can ‘t get me via email. But it’s Optonline and aol. I never blocked anyone. But it tells them I did.
Lucia, what was Sally Ears last name? Camille do you remember?
Susan Lentini I know you too. I thought you were in my brothers class. Salvatore Enea. Then again who knows maybe my class. Can’t remember, but I do know you.
Yes Terry, Anthony- Carol Castaldo thats her name, she was in my class. I don’t know where I got Roxanne from.
Someone mentioned Stanley on 22nd St. Wezak I think is his last name. Camille and I hung out with him and Nicky Bruzzeze(?) I think he lived near Roland. I also remember something about a fire bomb or something thrown in their house thrown a mail flap, which caused a fire.
Terry I know the feeling, everything I do is in between this site. Sorry to hear that you lost your husband. Was it sudden? How long ago?
Lucia I can’t believe Francine called you I was going to call her to tell her about this site. I met her in Howell, I went for a card and there she was staring at me as we both said I know you. Did you tell her about this site. Did you know Eugene Amandola died. Someone told me, don’t remember who. Santina

Hi cousin Debbie,
I just read your entry. You have such a gift with words.
Hope Charlie is improving each day………please say hello for me.
We keep asking, “does anyone remember…………”At 84 years old, my mother remembers everybody and everything from the past (she still lives there!) Anyway, I truly wish she was sitting beside me because I know she would be able to answer any question that you have. She’s so sharp it’s scary. I’m sure many of you remember Vera Lentini, still living on 22nd. I hope I have half her senses at her age! (God bless her!!!!!!)
Hello Again!
This is getting better and better.
To Carol and Santina . . . . My wife Jeanne says hello to you and she also remembers the good times that you had.
And yes Carol, my sister use to ride on the Saint Anna’s float along with my cousin Mary Ann (Salmieri). My Uncle Jim was a member of St. Anna’s and worked with my father at St. John’s and St. Rocco’s Bingo. My Aunt Tessie Salmieri (Aversano from 21ST bet. 4th and 5th Ave.) is still living on 32nd Street.
Someone asked about the Castaldo’s. They never lived above my mother’s store (The Lourdes Shoppe). For a short while they lived above Rocco’s Candy store and then on the other side of us, for many years. If I remember correctly, they had a Dry Cleaning business on the first floor (I thnk!!). Then I know they moved across the street; they purchased a house on the same side of the street as St. Anna’s club.
Well take care and keep the thoughts coming!
Frank Mauriello
OK, OMG in heaven, Maria Avasano!!!!!! I can’t believe this.
Lucia I love you for this site.. Maria how are you.?. I’m a little worried now because you know all my secrets about how bad I was in that class, with Catharine Paladino and You..
Your right, you were a brown nose, and you were the cutiest girl on 19th street, but you never came out, you were always doing your homework.! You lived on the top floor of the house, next to that apartment building which was next to the Viggnipiano’s house. You know we had a big reunion 3 years ago with Bobby Corbett, Jessie, Claudio, Richie Muscatello, Patty Morello and everyone from 19st.. The beauty of it was everyone from 19st merged with everyone from 21st-that was a pack of wolfs-Maria you were already living the good life before that happend, but I remember you fondly..
Let me stop and thank everyone for your kind words about Jeanne. Me and my family were blessed to have most of you with us last weekend.. Lucia, it was great to see you and Deits and Tony P and Ro- thank you for being there for us. Especially Jamesy-
Maria Avasano, name all the nuns and teachers from K to 8th grade- Who was our 1st grade nun or teacher. Terry I remember Sister Carmalina so well I didn’t even want to bring her up. She was evil- She poured a whole gallon of holy water on me, with one hand and stomped me at the same time, “I’ll get the devil out of You!” I said before they never did break me, but they tried. Let’s put it gently I was big on being a non-conformist. Maria how many days did I spend in the closets at St John’s?
As for Rosa, Angelo, and Theresa Galino, they are, what were known as my “Ginny Cousins” from my mothers side, they are actually my second cousins and my Mothers first cousins. I could never really figure it all out. Theresa and Rosa both came to Jeanne’s wake. When I saw Rosa, we both cried like babies, she feels our loss equally with us. I always loved them, still do. I loved Angelo too. He had a cousin named, let me see if I can spell it right, “Boopaneil” or something. Lucia do you remember him? he was this warm hearted guy who was always so nice to us and he loved my mother and my family. I remember Angelo Golino’s father and Mother vividly. Does anyone remember my GrandMother, she lived on 21st street in that big walk up about two doors down from the Golino’s- She always wore black and she had one croos eye and she seemed to be always crying over something.
Terry- Deitsy told me Dee Dee straitened out- now your telling me she died-what a shame. Someone mentioned Patti Negri again, after I was asking about her yesterday.. Boy would I love to hear from her again she was funny, and we had a lot of fun together. I used to go out with her when she moved to Avenue J somewhere. OK I have to stop rambling- Maria it was so good to connect with you agian.. I’m so amazed at what’s going on here…
Hey Frank, Nice to hear from you.. I remember the Lorudes Shop so well, I remember your Mom too. Your right the Castaldos lived next to the shop, and above Rocco’s and then across the street..
Louise Lentini- I couldn’t picture you for a while but now that Maria Avasano came on, I do remember you and your sister very well now. I can see you both at Saint John’s.. wow, we should all write a book together.. It would be a monumental best seller..
Hello all, Teryy I think you asked about the Palma girls. I asked my mom for any info about them. She knows that Margaret moved to maybe Marine Park area. No knowledge about Florence or Donna. Oh Santina I wish I could picture your face. I’m so bad with this. Well a big hello to you anyway. If Jeanne Mauriello knows you then I certainly do also. I’ll ask her to refresh my sad memory. You’re right it definitely was Stanley Wejak. I think there sister became a nun. They had a nice Mom. Maria Aversano on this website. This is great. Sounds like you have a great family. Terry the reunion sounds great. Sept 21 is good for me. I have a wedding to go to on the 20th. 21st is a Sunday, My mom told me today that Millie Santanangelo passed away two days ago. She went to the wake today. She was Nick the barbers wife. Frank and Jeanne doesn’t a reunion sound great? Carol hope you can make it also. Well. good night to all.
EVERYONE…..
IT WAS SISTER GEORGINA CANNONBALL THAT THREW HOLY WATER AT US AND BEAT US UP. SISTER CARMELINA CARMELITA WHATEVER WAS OUR KINDERGARTEN TEACHER SHE WAS SO SWEET.. THEY ARE EITHER 100 YRS OLD OR DEAD. LOL TERRY
SUSAN,
I FEEL SO BAD ABOUT MILLIE SANTANGELO. I SAW HER A FEW YEARS AGO IN BAYRIDGE.
We’ll I am amazed this is so wonderful! I grew up on 20th street between 5 & 6th Ave…I lived in the house that had the horses for awhile in the 60″s…backed onto the St John’s schoolyard.
I graduated from St John in 1966 was in the same class as Maria Aversano, Catherine Paladino, the Lentini twins and of course Anthony Oliver!! Oh boy do I remember some of trouble you got yourself into..do you recall having your hair put into many pony tails because you would not get it cut..we were in the 8th grade…Sr Ann Dolores. You did spend many hours in the closet. I hope that some of these memories will help you thru this difficult time..my sympathies..I do remember you sister.
So many great memories and great people, we were blessed to have grown up in such an environment
I am very fortunate to still have as my closest friends…Maria Aversano Eskew, Marie Cirillo Albano & Maria Torre Korlofsky. While we all live in different places we have remained very close. Thank you Maria Eskew for sending me the link.
I now live in the Myrtle Beach area of SC, I was married to John for 34 years (he passed away in 2005), he also graduated from St John’s ’62 & Bishop Ford in ’66. I have a daughter, Kristina who recently got married and she is expecting my first grandchild in October…it’s a girl!
Terry, Carol, Fran…etc…thanks Marie
Marie Matera, I remember you!!
Susan that Barbara you’re talking about was from 27th street I think.
Hi Anthony,
I remember Sister St. Williams as our first grade teacher. Even behind that habit you could tell she was absolutely beautiful. If you were in my 7th grade class, she was Sister St. Jerome (tough nun.) Believe it or not, somewhere I still have all my elementary report cards. If I can find them, I’ll be able to name all teachers we had then.
I’m so glad you remember my sister and I. Yesterday I spoke to your cousin, Theresa Golino. I hope all the Oliva’s are doing better. So sorry for your loss.
Terry
I’m pretty sure Sept. 21st will be good for me.
I also feel terrible about the passing of Millie Santangelo. I remember when she took my sister & I shopping for a birthday gift for my mom. Millie was so nervous that day, as we were unaware that my mom had a doctors appointment with the breast surgeon.
Thank God, everything turned out great for her. Millie was wonderful to us!
Flo Catalano,
It’s been a long time……..
Do you remember one summer day, a long time ago, we presented a play to our friends in the neighborhood in your backyard? We were sooo excited!! I can’t remember what play, but I never forgot it!
Anthony Oliva,
I’m so sorry for your loss!
Prayers to you and your family.
Louise,
The sock story cracked me up!
I could just see you at home washing your socks and mommy rewashing them! Remember how she remade our beds!
Diane,
Bobby from across the street was the first boy I went to the movies with. I was about twleve years old. West Side Story was playing up on ninth ave. I even asked him to my prom but he was sooo shy, he turned me down.
Santina
My cousin Sally Ear’s last name was Latina. His mom and dad (Ida & Benny) had a luncheonette (Cozy Kitchen) on the corner of 21st and 6th Av. My mom (Rosie Mei) worked there also. That location eventually became a social club that Rocco’s brother Johnny opened. Spent many hours with Rocco there. Pretty much my home away from home. From there we all migrated to St. Anna’s.
Anthony I see you keep checking I told you this site was addicting. Today will be fast just wanted to know if anyone keeps in touch with Marie Castaldo. I think she lives in Staten Island?
Tony Mei, your cousin Sally Ears, I think he lives in the Pocono’s in Hawley or did he move? I saw him there a few years ago and he gave me his phone number to call him and I lost it and could never get it in the phone book up there. I have a home in Lake Ariel and he lived about 15 minutes from me in Hawley. I hung around with him for years with Allen Clinton, and Jackie Price. My husband Deetzie wants to find Stevie Price, does anyone know where he lives in Florida?
ANYONE KNOW WHERE ANY OF THE PRICE BROTHERS ARE STEVIE, JACKIE OR DANNY. WE WOULD LOVE TO FIND STEVIE. THANKS
Hi. Terry. The sally ears I grew up with last name was LATINA. His parents were Benny and IDA.They owned the candy store on 21st. and 6th back in the early 50s. Be Well. MICHAEL MICHEL.
hi everyone
my grand mother lived on 20th st and 6th ave. on the 4 corners were philomenes grocery(sw), the 3 star bar and grill(nw), mike anacreante’s drug store(ne), and nick’s pool hall(se). my wife of 42 years lived on 20th st between 5th and 6th ave. around the corner on 5th ave was hymies candy store and on 21st (DiAamico’s bakery) street between 4th and 5th ave was the feast of saint anna, where i won my mom her first (of many parakeets) . i went to manual training hs but was in first graduating class of john jay. it was very nice to read about the old neighborhood
PS: MY WIFE WAS A TEACHER IN ST. JOHN’S THE EVANGILIST SCHOOL
OMG!!!!! Either we’re all on a very laid back vacation, retired, or we’ll all be unemployed or divorced soon because of the time we’re spending on this blog!!! I don’t have a memory for individual names and I wish I could see your faces. My sister and I, along with my cousins, have been badgering our moms for info on the neighborhood. I sat with my friend Festina from 21st St. for hours and she recalls many more people than I do since she spent so many more years in the neighborhood than I did. She’s living in Burlington County now in NJ, her mom is on SI. Her brothers Vinny, John and Joe are either on SI or in NJ. I remember my kindergarten teacher at St. John’s – Sr. St. Joseph. My first day of school – my cousins Annie and Louise standing as line monitors on either side of me saying, “You’re not going to cry Debby right? Don’t cry Debby okay?” First grade – Sr. Raymond deSales – sitting next to Mary Arancio with our sweaters on our seats in between us to make room for our guardian angels. Second grade Sr. Philip Neri who I thought was so beautiful and sang like an angel. Then 3rd grade Mrs. Maresca who read aloud from the catechism and never got off her chair at her desk. For some reason I remember how she used to say the quote at the bottom of each page, “Jesus Sayeez”, instead of “says”. Weird how things stick in your brain. How about playing school in the gate – my cousin Annie gave homework. Been teaching now for years and recently told my class about the odd things we’d collect – the wacko’s we were in 3rd grade saving pencil erasures (after erasing marks on our desks) in pill bottles or the chicklet containers. Haven’t figured that out yet. Remember seeing the nuns walking up and down the block in pairs and running to walk beside them. Thought I’d have to go to confession if I saw their ears or hair under their veil. As a teacher many, many years later was met at the entrance of our school’s convent by my principal who was a nun. She was in her bathrobe – I went straight to confession. Susan – how can we tell the story about when you and I and my daughters were in church and I dropped the host? Still pee in our pants about how our St. John’s training was our instinct. Susan stopped and pointed to the floor and I reached my hands to the sky. We thought God himself would strike us dead, but nobody else moved. The priest told us he was a public school kid and didn’t grow up with that guilt. (After Susan asked if there would be a black mark on my soul.) Oh well (I think I just told the story……)Keep them coming – We could probably have bus stops along Rt. 9 for anyone on their way to a reunion in September. I know that sometimes when I’m at the mall, or in the supermarket I’ll see a face that I know I know – can you imagine everyone together putting names to faces.
Diane, I’m not related to the Ricciardi’s from the Pork Store. My maiden name was Carabetta. I’m now a Rittenhouse. Lived at 215 21 Street.
Santina, I now remember Jackie, who married Pepe (Pepitone) from 214 21 street. I didn’t know that the Branciforte’s moved to SI. Linda’s aunt and uncle, Nick and Pauline Caporizzo, lived in the same apartment building as my family for many years.
Anthony, I know your cousin Donna Rago very well, she baptized my daughter. And Catherine Paladino, my cousin, is married to Thomas Ischia, from 21 bet 5th and 6th. I’m sure you know him. I think I remember your grandmother. Didn’t she live across the hall from your cousin Donna?
Maria Aversano Eskew, My cousin Meg Rumola lived in the same apartment building as you on 19th street. Do you remember her? If I’m not mistaken, your mom altered my gown for Meg’s wedding.
It’s funny how we all kinda know each other. Back in the day, our extended families lived within a 10 block radius, so we were bound to meet so many people.
Frank Mauriello, My dad used to always say that he was your father’s helper on a fruit and vegetable wagon he had way back. Did your father ever peddle fruits?
Debbie,
You’re hysterical.
My youngest son, Michael, shakes his head each time he sees me on this site. He said, “you see, NOW maybe you can understand when I’m online talking to my friends!” (Of course, he’ll see his friends later today.) He has no conception of time just yet…..it’s been about 43 years since I completed 8th grade!!!! I’m enjoying the catch-up.

Louise- Thank you, for the kind words– but that’s right Sister St Williams- I can see her face now. Do you remember Sister St Jerome’s agenda- (guess)- nope- She wanted all of us to be Crusaders of Christ- I don’t think I ever made that club, did you? You saved your report cards?? Wow… I had to burn mine before I left the building…lol- It’s so great to hear from all of you.
Margaret C. Yes I know about the Ischia’s I see them often. We get together occasionally with our other friends of 40 years Adele and Albert on Sackett Street- And yes Donna lived across the hall from my grandmother…thanks for that. I can’t place you Margret although your name is very familiar.
To All– We are still looking for Patty Negri.
Hi everyone,
Some of you were interested in the names of the nuns/teachers at St. John’s. My mother saved all my report cards and the following names were on the respective report cards:
Kindergarten – Sister Mary Carmelina
1st Grade – Sister Charlotte Marie
2nd Grade – Sister Andrew Maria
3rd Grade – Sister Raymondina (She later taught at Bishop Kearney)
4th Grade – Mrs. Garcia
5th Grade -Sister Mary Agnes Veronica
6th Grade – Sister Regina Laetare
7th Grade – Sister St. Jerome (She slapped my face once) Imagine!
8th Grade – Sister Mary Ann Delores ( I remember we ordered her a Good Guy tee shirt from the radio station).
Well folks, there you have it – if you graduated in 1966 like me.
ANTHONY AND MARIA.
MARIA I CANT BELIEVE YOU HAVE ALL YOUR REPORT CARDS. ANTHONY, WE COULD HAVE HAD A BARN FIRE WITH YOUR CARDS AND MINE. I DID NOT MAKE THE CRUSADERS EITHER. PROBABLY BECAUSE JAMSIE DISTRACTED ME. IF WE COULD HAVE CUT OUT OF ST. JOHNS WITH OUT GETTING CAUGHT WE PROBABLY WOULD HAVE. MADE ME CUT OUT OF SUMMER SCHOOL WHEN WE WERE TEENS. LOVE TERRY

Sister St. Jerome hit me on my knuckes ,because I erased something.
when you think about it ,there was alot of child abused going on in that schooll..HA,Ha
Hi Maria,
I distinctly remember when you were slapped. We were all shocked, but for some reason I recall the principal (nun) coming into our class, made a comment (something about the girls hicked up uniform and tighly pulled belts) and you made a “tisking” sound, you know, annoyed and disgusted with her remark. She then asked who made the noise and you confessed. She asked you to come to the front of the class and then proceeded to slap you. I thought that was terrible, but you just stood there and took it……..good for you! I was so naive – everything impressed me – what a baby.
We were monitors and walked the lower grades to the corner to meet their parents. There was only one black boy in our entire school and some of the monitors made fun of his hair. As I was walking home, I was tapped on my shoulder, turned around and there he was………….he punched me in my face because he was made fun of. I guess he chose me because I was small (he was bigger than me and in the fourth grade!) What else is new (my 17 year old is six feet!)
I don’t remember the slapping. I guess I was in the closet that day.
Louise I’m not surprised you remembered that so vividly. Don’t forget we were very young and impressionable. Being slapped by a nun is not normal, although back then it was acceptable.
Most of those Nuns would have been brought up on charges today for doing what they did back then
Anthony, you’re absolutely right. I have to tell you that you made school very interesting. You keep bringing up the closet and I picture you there. I felt so bad for you. Those nuns had nothing better to do than put all the boys in the closet for the most ridiculous reasons. They ran the class like we were in the military. They would walk down the aisle with their crucifixes flying back and forth – I would cringe! How about the “pink envelope” we had to hand in each week as our donation to the church. God forbid you didn’t have it.
I’m complaining, but I wouldn’t change a thing.
Terry,
Paulette Rittenhouse (Sissy to her family) is my sister-in-law. She lives in Florida now. One of her best friends was Nancy Saverese.
Debbie Rittenhouse is the ex-wife of my brother-in-law Billy. I
emailed this site to Donna Rago, I hope she comes on it.
