NANCY,
OH MY GOD NANCY WHERE ARE YOU. I REMEMBER WHEN YOU WERE BORN. I REMEMBER YOUR DAD COMING HOME FROM THE SERVICE AND HOLDING YOU IN HIS HANDS YOU WERE SO SMALL AND NOW YOU ARE 39. WOW I AM OLD. ALOT OF MEMORIES IN YOUR GRANDMAS HOUSE AND YOUR MOMS AUNT. EVERYTIME I GO TO WASHINGTON I GO TO THE VIETNAM WALL AND LOOK AT YOUR DADS NAME. ONCE I LEFT A FRAME OF ME, FRANNY CAROL AND YOUR MOM ON ONE OF OUR TRIPS TO THE GRID IRON. WE LOOKED SO GOOD. Hi Linda Silva,
I don’t think I know you, but I know Califonia Pies well. My dad used to take me there when I was a kid. He grew up in Carroll Gardens and California Pies was a regular spot. Our Lady of Peace Church was right around the corner from my grandma’s. Ebinger’s was actually my favorite – loved the blackout, but my sister and I used to fight over the last piece of the half mocha cake. Now that was just too good to be true! We also played Skellzys – such fun. Thanks for remembering!
Camille
Hey Carol,
I was laughing when I saw what you said about the Palmetto Bugs, Those poor girls in the room next door had them on the wall when they opened up the drapes, we had one in our room and I remember our beloved friend Gay was screaming and I called down to the desk to get someone up here to get rid of the bugs and he came to our room with a can of bug spray, I told him you got to be kidding we need a bomb to kill those suckers. I got sunpoising too, remeber the big bubbles I had on my body, when Rich meet me at the airport I told him dont even touch me I was in such pain. But with all the pain we HAD A GREAT TIME! We go that from Disney walking around with peeled skin. That’s another story………..
Love,
JUDY
judy,
POOR ME. MY MOTHER SAID YOU GET ON THAT PLANE TO FLORIDA WITH THE GIRLS I WILL NOT PAY FOR YOUR WEDDING GOWN. SHE SAID YOU ARE GETTING MARRIED WHY WOULD YOU GO ON A VACATION WITH THE GIRLS. I REMEMBER BEING SO SICK AND LONELY WHEN YOU GIRLS WENT.
THOSE WERE THE DAYS KIDS REALLY REALLY LISTENED TO THEIR PARENTS. LOVE TERRY
Camille, I don’t see Doris in fact the last time I saw her, was with you at my house many years ago
I am seeing my life pass before my eyes… The more I read these comments, the deeper into my past they go… And now I have an
opportunity to WELCOME BACK INTO MY LIVE – Nancy Loughran (Auletti).
HELLO NANCY – Never in a million years would I think we’d meet again,
and through this medium, the internet. And to communicate with you as
an adult, after all this time. Amazing Blessing!. You were a little girl when I last saw you.
Terry called me this afternoon and said that you posted a comment on this website.
I’m so happy you remember me. I practically ‘lived’ with you and your mom when you were born (21st & 6th ave). I’m sure you’ve seen the pictures of how we would dress you up (and then we got dressed in your dad’s uniform; but that’s another topic, not to be put in print 🙂
I spent many years with your mom’s family, Aunt Marie (DeLuca), Uncle Sal (Savarese). When you look at your mom & dad’s wedding pictures, I am the one with your Uncle Sal. Also, for a few years, I carried your Aunt Marie’s baptisimal certificate as my ‘phony proof.’ Your mom and I ‘edited’ it to make it closer to my age. For years at the GridIron and the “Two for One” Pub, they thought my name was Marie Savarese. On my 18th birthday I couldn’t find the phony ID, so I used my own for the first time. Ha Ha that was fun – We knew the bouncer well – so he just glanced at the ID, smiled, and said “Happy Birthday,” I’m sure he knew all along. Terry, remember Bill? I have pictures of us with him somewhere (and many others, e.g., Frankie Tedesco).
Nancy, before your mom and dad got married, I would stay at her house on Saturday nights. We would stay up all night and talk and talk. Then early in the morning we’d meet Peter (your father), my boyfriend Danny Lorenzo, Carol Miele, and her boyfriend Chucky DeVito. We’d all go to Garretson Beach and spend the day. I recall we did this frequently during the summer.
We did lots of driving in those days – would drive upstate, and yes – even took the road to WOODSTOCK a few days after the event. (Please don’t ask me what Woodstock is).
We hung out in a park on 23rd St., between 4th & 5th (Carol mentions this in one of her comments – her mother would come and drag us out; and we’d hide from her anywhere we could.)
The six of us did many things together, incuding going on vacation
with your grandmother and grandfather (Savarese), Aunt Marie and her family. Actually, your grandparents took us on vacation and the guys just happened to show up. I remember Aunt Mary and Sid on 22nd St.
I also knew your dad’s family very well. We spent time at their apartment on 76th and 5th, on top of the bar – ( Terry mentioned on an earlier comment). I think your grandfather worked at that bar. I also remember their longtime family friend named Drew.
And of course I remember your brother John and John Lunghi. I would visit with mom and John at their apartment in Bay Ridge. You were so young; John was even younger. That is the last time/place I remember seeing you all. I can’t remember anything after 1976, and I honestly do not remember how we lost touch.
I have your email and will be in touch. I’m sure you’ve given mom our best by now. Look forward to catching up with you and the family.
I’m sure you are a beautiful young woman (always thought you’d look like
your mom).
And, your father always reminded me of Paul Newman. I never forgot him. I am so glad that Terry brought our picture to the Viet Nam Memorial, to your dad. That was very significant for us! I’m glad she did that on our behalf, to acknowledge the era, and to continue to Bless your father and our friendships!
I am glad you added your comments to this site, I HOPE THAT IN SOME SMALL WAY – WE CAN BRING YOUR FATHER TO LIFE FOR YOU BY SHARING SOME WONDERFUL MEMORIES.
To end on a ‘lighter note,’ you should know that your mom and dad were the Brangelina of our day!
Love,
Aunt Franny
actually – I think you called me Aunt Me Me..
Carol, Terry – just had a flashback – that’s where MeMe came from..
xxxxx

To Terry, Carol, and Franny(my aunt me me),
i am glad that i did this because mom is so happy. It brought up great memories for her. I talked to her last night , and she was thrilled.
Franny, i do remember my aunt meme. that i could never forget. mom told me all about the bridal party and alot of stories about you guys. She can’t wait to see you.
CAROL,
OH MY GOD, THE RED ROAD RUNNER. REMEMBER WHEN WE WENT THE WRONG WAY IN THE BKLYN TUNNEL. WE WERE SCREAMING. LOL TERRY
Re Road Runner: Remember the car races down 2nd Ave, 39th St. area.
Vinny Czado had a red Camaro. He would lend it to Danny when he
was home on leave. And yes Carol, the wedding song was “Somewhere My Love” – recall the words “Someday we’ll meet again, my love. Someday whenever the spring breaks through.” They are so relevant given the circumstances.
I remember we went with Nancy to book the Bay Ridge Manor and the guy pressured her to quickly pick the song. It was very spontaneous; I recall that moment like it was yesterday for some reason.
I have pictures of us in your yard Carol. We all had rollers in our hair and we were preparing for the wedding. (Maybe it was Nancy’s shower??)
“Little” Nancy, I’ll send you an email w/my contact info.
I REMEMBER THE CAR RACES. I WISH I HAD VINNY CZADOS CAR NOW. MY MIKE HAS THE SAME CAR NOW IN BLUE. HE RUNS INTO RALPHIE MARSELLA , FRANKY MARESCA (5TH AVE FRUIT STORE NEXT TO THE RECOD SHOP) AND ANTHONY MEI AT THE CAR SHOWS IN STATEN ISLAND. REMEMBER THE BIG ACCIDENT WITH TOMMY DERNS AND HENRY SPINNATO. TOMMY WAS IN A COMA. I WONDE DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO TOMMY DERNS. TERRRY
OK GIRLS,
I FINALLY CALLED JAMSIE OLIVA. HE SAID TELL FRANNY AND SQUEELY MIELE TO LAN A GET TOGETHER. HE WILL MEET US WHERE EVER WE WANT. HE SOUNDS GREAT. LETS PLAN SOMETHING. LOVE TERRY
FRAN, THE NITE WE MY YARD WAS IT THE BRIDAL PARTY THING FOR NANCY, NOW THAT I THINK ABOUT IT I THINK IT WAS. YES I REMEMBER WE ALL HAD OUR HAIR SET IN ROLLERS BECAUSE THE NEXT DAY WAS THEIR WEDDING. C & T –
After 30 years of losing touch, I had a two-hour call with Nancy yesterday. It was great! I sent you both an email with options/suggestions for get-togethers with N & J. I am open to
anything…
C – I gave Jamsie your phone number and emailed you his numbers a few days ago. Hope you got it.
All – Have a Blessed Day!
P. S. forgot to say THANK YOU to the Administrator and Michael Scharalli for this Site. Guess you can see all the good things you are bringing about.
Michael, I knew your mom, she is a great person. And I knew your sister DeeDee (you and I have also met in the past) – God Bless Your Family!
Henry Spinnato I remember him. Tommy Derns also sounds familiar. Where are they now?
SANTINA,
I ALSO WONDER WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM. I WONDER IF TOMMY DENS EVER CAME OUT OF THE COMA. THE SPINNATO’S WERE A BIFG FAMILY. GUY SPINNATO WAS IN MY CLASS IN ST. JOHNS FOR AWHILE.
TERRY PS I GAVE YOUR OTHER EMAIL ADDRESS TO MARGARET. LOOKS LIKE THIS SITE IS SLOWING DOWN SOME.
i remember guy and henry spinato had a crush on guy, think i went out with him for about a day. yes it does seem like this is slowing down, i think we about covered everyone and everthing we all could think of. but let’s try and keep it going i’m sure we all have a lot more to add.
GOOD MORNING TO ALL MY SOUTH BROOKLYN FRIENDS
LAST NIGHT I HAD TO ATTEND A FUNERAL SERVICE FOR MY COUSIN TERRY BELLONE AT DUFFYS IN (PARK SLOPE). I DID NOT EVEN FINSH SAYING HELLO TO MY FAMILY WHEN I WAS TAPPED ON THE SHOULDER, ONLY TO TURN AROUND AND SEE A FRIEND (BILLY CROW) WHO LIVED ON MY BLOCK 6TH STREET. THE LAST TIME I SAW HIM WAS 40 YEARS AGO. OF COURSE ALL THE OMG’S STARTED AS WE HUGGED AND KISSED. HE WAS OLDER THEN ME AND WAS VERY GOOD FRIENDS WITH MY BROTHER JOSEPH. WITHIN A FEW MINUTES NOW ALL THE OLD FRIENDS START TO SHOW UP.. THIS WAS SO WONDERFUL, BOBBY BELLONE, GUY BELLONE, PONSI, MARY, FLO PIPER, BILL SOMERVILLE.. WE ALL STARTED TALKING ABOUT OUR CHILDHOOD AND WHAT GREAT TIMES WE ALL HAD. JOE’S CANDY STORE ON 6TH AVENUE AND 5TH STREET, WE COULD GET A LIME RICKY FOR 10 CENTS AND PENNY CANDY AT THAT TIME. HOW WE PLAYED STICKBALL, GOING INTO THE JONNY PUMP, AND HOW OUR MOMS WOULD BE OUTSIDE HAVING COFFEE WAITING FOR OUR DADS TO COME HOME ESPECIALLY IN THE SUMMER. NONE OF OUR MOMS HAD TO WORK AT THAT TIME WHAT A LUXURY THAT WAS. AND BETWEEN 5 AND 6 YOUR NAME WOULD BE CALLED OUT THE WINDOW FOR DINNER. MIND YOU (NO CELL PHONES THEN) JUST YOUR MOTHERS VOICE AND THAT COULD BE HEARD 2 BLOCKS AWAY (HA HA) IN MY HOUSE IF YOU DID NOT COME IN BECAUSE YOU WERE SO INGROSSED IN WHAT EVER GAME YOU WERE PLAYING (FEEEZE TAG, BUCK BUCK HOW MANY FINGERS DO I HAVE UP.. WHAT A NAME FOR A GAME. HAHA I WAS ALWAYS THE PILLOR BECAUSE I WAS SMALL. YOU GOT 1 CALL FOR DINNER THAT WAS IT HA HA. OUR PARENTS DID NOT NEGOTIATE AND TALK THINGS OUT IF YOU WERE NOT THERE TO BAD TO SAD THE TABLE WAS CLEARED AND YOU WERE ON YOUR OWN….MY HOUSE WAS ALWAYS THE HANG OUT HOUSE BECAUSE MY MOTHER WAS A VERY GOOD COOK EVERYONE LOVED HER MEABALLS, MY FRIEND BILLY WHO WAS OF IRISH DECENT SAID HE LOVED TO COME TO THE MIDDLE OF THE BLOCK AND SIT ON MY STOOP TO HEAR THE ITALIAN OPERA THAT WAS BEING HEARD OUT THE WINDOWS HE HAD NEVER HEARD SUCH BEAUTIFULL MUSIC LIKE THAT BEFORE. HE WOULD SIT FOR HOURS ON THE STOOP, IN THIS DAY HE WOULD BE CALLED A STALKER HA HA HOW TIMES HAVE CHANGED. AND EVERY DAY AFTER SCHOOL YOU WOULD HEAR BOBBY LUPO PRACTICE HIS DRUMS IT WAS SO LOUD WE ALL WOULD STOP WHAT WE WOULD BEING DOING AND SAY HERE HE GOES AGAIN . HE BECAME A PROFESSIOAL DRUMMER LATER ON IN YEARS.. AS WE ALL STOOD AND TALKED EACH TRYING TO GET SOMETHING OUT TO SAY (TIME STOOD STILL FOR 4 HOURS) WE ALL WERE RIGHT BACK TO BEING ON 6HT STREET JUST BEING KIDS AND TEENAGERS HAVING FUN, BEING WITH ALL OUR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS, WE ALL AGREED THAT WE WOULD NOT CHANGE ANY OF IT NOT ONE SECOND. WE HAD EACH OTHER AND MADE A WONDERFUL BOND THAT CANNOT BE CHANGED. WE MADE BOX CARTS TOGETHER, WE SHARED OUR 5 CENTS LEMON ICES AND YES OUR 2 CENT CANDIES. AND OUR FRESH LEMONDE THAT OUR MOTHER SENT OUT TO US. AND YOUR EXTRA MITTENS IN THE WINTER WHEN YOURS FROZE UP AFTER SNOWBALL THROWING HA HA.. THESE ARE PRECIOUS MEMORIES THAT CANNOT BE ERASED , THEY ARE INPRINTED AND MARKED IN YOUR BRAIN FOR A LIFETIME.. AS WE ALL EXCHANGE THE EMAILS AND PROMISED TO GET TOGETHER. MY ONLY THOUGHT WAS, WE ARE ALL HERE FOR A COMMON BOND TO SAY FAREWELL TO A FRIEND AND OUT OF THIS VERY SAD GET TOGETHER HOW MUCH JOY AND LAUGHTER AND LOVE WAS BROUGHT TO ALL OF US AS (TIME STOOD STILL FOR 4 HOURS) IN THE LOBBY OF DUFFYS FUNERAL PARLOR…. YOUR SOUTH BROOKLYN FRIEND
Fran Bruno, I love it. I know we have to get a reunion going before the holidays. I remember you and Phil like it was yesterday. I didn’t know Peter Sacco was your cousin. Remember Jimmy Cantwell the one that I went with from 12th Street. He was Peter’s best friend. Tell you sister I was asking for her. We will get something together so we can all see each other again. Carol Miele I can’t believe your memories of Anna. All of you are part of the best time of my life. I am so glad I grew up then and lived where I did. Our neighborhood was the best and WE WERE ALL THE BEST that is why we all have so many things to say and so many good memories. Jamesy is my heart and I love him dearly. Santina and Camille was a big part of my life and Camille’s whole family and Deetzie’s family where very close. They were like one family. Good old Uncle Albert I could go on for hours. The Grid Iron I can’t believe Santina brought that up. I waited all week to do Bay Ridge on the weekend. Remember the Gallery anyone and Shanticlair however you spell it.No one club hopped like we did. But we always ended back to 22nd at the end of the night. Thank God for Deetzie and Anna and the building they owned that we had the club in. Remember Camille our cleaning details on Saturday afternoon to get the club ready for the night time. The boys let us join so we would clean. Remeber the puppies that Sampson and Dutchess had. Your Dad brought home Sampson and Deetzie had Dutchess in the club and they met and fell in love and the next thing the club was filled with puppies. Deetzie and Billy use to go horse back riding and bring the horses down into the club. We all need a reunion. Fran Bruno you need to get this website to your sister. I would love to talk to Phyllis. We were close. Anyone got kids that need a job I work for the Utility Workers Union Local 1-2 that represents the Con Edison workers. We might go on strike Tuesday night at midnight but once we do the Company in and get a contract anyone with boys that might want a job with Con Edison let me know. Love to all and I hope Connie Miele and Anna are together still having fun like they did then. They were close friends and were together alot hope they still are. OH Deetzie brothers name was Nunzio but they called him Peter. His father was something else and was a big part of 22nd Street and those who mentioned FC, I am still friends with his wife Joanie Calsiano and remember Joanne Cristine who had the son Paul and lived two houses up from the club. I am still friends with her. Well back to work and I enjoy this so much. Camille you are right this is amazing and I will not only give Deetzie a hug, I will give him a big kiss for you too. Send him an email he was the one to track you down through Classmates that time. That’s how we found out you were Camille Green. Love you all Lucia
Terry Angelo Sherman I am trying to figure out who you are. You remember so much about the neighborhood. You talk about Joanie red and the book I have it and she has plenty of copies if anyone wants one. Somone mentioned what ever happened to her daughter Margie. She was killed and found far away and some man and woman buried her. Joanie red tried to find her for years even went on unsolved mysteries and they didn’t help. A couple of years ago a detective opened up a slew of cold cases and got interested in Margie’s for some reason who was labeled Jane Doe and they tracked down Joanie red. got information about what she and people in the neighborhood thought happened and who they saw her last with and they cought the guy that killed her he was from the neighborhood. I think his name was Pete and he was a drug dealer. FC killed himself after Paula died. He jumped in front of a train on 25th Street train station. Paula’s son Vito is doing great and still in the neighborhood. He hangs around with Jimmy Rossi’s nephew, Robert Rossi’s son. Good old bottle gang. I always think of them when I talk about Paula Calsiano. Well this website is addicting. Glad all the memories are mostly happy ones. Camille if we have a reunion you have to come. Say hello to your sister Marilyn for me. Terry refresh my memory. Do I know you? Lucia
I came from 17 street between 5 and 6 avenue. then moved to 15 street. my crowd came from 17 and 21 street. Dimples. Butchie, Joey, Deetzie, Irish, Johnny Gags, Stevie, Kelly, Sergio, Raymond, Red, Elena, Joanne, Gladys, Lucia, Poopsie, Louie, etc. Remember almost everyone and still stay in touch. Had great time going to Church dances at St Rocco’s and St John’s Church. I went to 146 grade school then to 10’s and then to Johny Jay High School. Hope to hear from someone from the old neighborhood. I know a lot of friends have come and gone but need to stay in contact.
linda,
beautiful what you wrote above. as i always say bittersweet. sad for your friend that died but wonderful memories and bonds.
love terry
Good Morning Lucia – I am very interested in Joanie’s book. I tried to get a copy a few years ago through Terry, but that did not work out. Please let me know price, shipping cost, etc. You can write me: [email protected]
I told Phyl about website and she loves it. I’m sure she’ll write soon. I
think it (Site) can be overwhelming when one sees it for the first time.
Yes, Peter Sacco’s father Albert was our cousin (remember Gertie?). The
only one left is my cousin/godmother Anna Sacco (she lived on 20th & 6th
when we were growing up). Otherwise, all the family is gone. 🙁
Phyl will also remember that ‘gang’ – Peter, Hobart – I have pictures of the
human pyramid they made at the beach, piling on top of each other. Remember how simple things were then and how we entertained ourselves?
* * *
Did anyone live in a cold-water flat? Our house on 20th St. had no heat;
it was warmed by the stove in our kitchen. As kids, Phyl and I would get dressed by the stove in the morning. (The young ones are saying – what’s this Little House on the Praire?) When I spoke to my friend Nancy the other day (after 30 years, and thanks to this site) – one of the first things
she talked about was my mother’s antique stove in the kitchen – and when she stayed over, there were at least 20 blankets on the bed and you’d get
weighed down. I remember when I slept at my grandma’s house across the street, I would feel sick the next day cause I wasn’t used to steam heat.
Good day to all!
Yes, San, I remember Henry Spinnato. He was in class at St. John’s for one grade, I think.
Lucia — yes, so many memories of the club on 22nd, all the fun we had and, of course, growing up across the street from Deetize. Funny, I had forgotten about Sampson and Duchess!! My sister, Marilyn, saved Sampson one day when he swalled a bone. She stuck her hand down his throat and pulled it out. And yes, I remember the horses!!
I asked about Margie, Joanie and FC ‘s other daughter. What happened to her?
Would love to have a reunion!
Camille, what was the guys name, – connected to Rocco’s- He drove us to Prospect Heights when we were late for school. A real good looking guy. Forgot his name.
Franny,
I read Joanie Red’s book it was very good, I stole it from Terry when I was at her house in Brooklyn, because I too I keeped asking for her to get me one..poor Ter where always picking on you LOL Well anyway I did return it to her when I went back up again. Ter did you read it yet??
Love ya’s
Judy
Francesca (and Santina-you would remember some of this)
I laughed when I saw your note. The heat in our house was a pot belly stove on the main floor and one radiator put in after I was 4 yrs old. I too remember my mom putting many blankets and our coats on the bed to keep us warm. Winters were murder and I remember our little hands would freeze on our way home from school. Mom would have a pan of warm water to warm them up.
Summers were steamy hot with no air conditioning or fans. My poor mom would drag us to Coney Island in the early morning and we would be back by 2:00. We would go out in the yard and put the garden hose over the clothes line – running in and out of the water. Our feet would burn from the sun on the ground all day until it cooled off from the water. Sometimes, the hydrant would be put on in the afternoon to cool the street off. I can still hear the “cheers” when it was turned on.
San, I remember him. I can see his face, but can’t remember his name. I think his family had the travel service on 5th Ave. A big guy, very handsome. Sonny something? Not right, can’t remember.
Do you remember when Rocco got married? All the crazy things he used to say! Also, remember Mickey, his nephew, who worked there too! Mike was Rocco’s father, Mickey’s grandfather.
Judy, what’s the name of Joanie Red’s book? I would love to read it. Thanks.
OK STOP PICKING ON ME. I STILL DONT FEEL GOOD. LOL YOU KNOW THERE IS AMAZON.COM AND BOOK STORES. DID YOU GIVE IT BACK TO ME JUDY?
I KNOW THE TITLE HAD LOVE AND I THINK HATE IN IT. I WILL CALL ANNIE SCHRALLI AND FIND OUT THE NAME. I NEVER READ THE BOOK BELIEVE IT OR NOT.
Hello All – RE: Joanie’s book.
It is titled “Love, Hope and Tragedy: A Brooklyn Memoir” by Joan Calciano Don Gabor and Eileen Cowell.
Used versions are available at this time on Barnes & Nobel..
I remember going to P.S. 146 and P.S. 10 and Joanie’s daughter, Linda Calciano was in my class. She married Vinny Calcione when we were young. Vinny’s sister Maryann was also in our class. The family owned a deli on 18th & 6th.
Unrelated deli question – does anyone remember Caliciono ‘supermarket’
across from P.S. 10s? they had the BEST tuna fish sandwiches ever.
Ciao

Hi All,
So who remembers the Rock and Roll Shows downtown Brooklyn?
Allen Freed, Murry the K — Cousin Brucie came later
Linda Finamore, Chickie Arena and me — For a $1.25 we saw:
The Cleftons, , Fats Domino, the Platters, Frankie Avalon, The Coasters, Bill Haley and the Comets, Dion and the Belmonts, The Supremes, Rondells, Bo Diddley,
Jerry Lee Lewis – tore up the stage, Little Richard with his pants falling off his backside,
standing in line for 5 hours to see Johnny Mathis, we screeemed and cried so loud we could hardly hear him singing. Everly Brothers, Chuck Berry — much much more.
After the shows we would go to have burgers at Juniors. I do not remember Juniors being as big as it is now. I just remember a little place with booths.
